Thank you for watching my video, I appreciate the support !
I hope you have a long and prosperous career as a mechanic, whether as an employee or shop owner. You come off as being honest and having integrity and most important [in my eyes] not being condescending. You do a damn good job;a very methodical approach and meticulous. Dude! keep up the good work and delivering awesome content.
Thank you! I appreciate tha awesome comment 👍💪🙏
Hey man, thanks for letting us follow your thoughts on this, I found that real interesting. Under that cover made me wince. I don't do anything nearly so complex, auto wise. But I'm striving to learn more about maintenance and some repair procedures. It's mega helpful to really see some real life consequences of neglect. Often you can read or be told, but when you see and experience is when the lesson really hits home.
Thanks for watching. Stick around n hopefully my videos can teach you a thing or two
I'm dealing with the same codes but on a v8 volvo. I like how you show and explain what your looking for with live data, I have been working on vehicles for over 15 years now and just finally got myself a bidirectional scan tool and am learning how to really use all this live data to diagnose. I've been correctly diagnosing vehicles for years now just using basic knowledge, these new vehicles everyone is afraid of and saying how they are so complicated now but for me I think its the opposite. The more we can communicate with the data in live format we can definitely diagnose these vehicles much better and it will also weed out parts changers. The mechanic field needs an overhaul, too many amateurs that have no business working on anything and undercut everyone else with there dirt cheap labor that usually just makes things worse lol
These are instructive videos, I'm following your thought process closely. It's fun to pause and think through what I'd do next, then resume and see where it takes you. I think I'll binge watch your videos, ha ha ha. Wow, you see a lot of pathology.
Thanks for following along . i do the same thing sometimes😂pause a video to think about the problem. I appreciate you watching
These are so helpful, thanks Jonathan.
No problem. Thanks for watching
Jon that’s a eco tech motor and with variable timing you got be on the oil changes and run synthetic oil to clean things clean .. with that sludge built up like all the galleries are small and get clogged up .. I wound not waste money on a new timing set .. but if you you need to trans fluid Thur it or something to clean up that motor before put a chain in it ..
Yes i recommended they get a different engine but i doubt theyll do that. Most likely they haven't me put a new timing set on it. I warned them about putting a timing set on it. I was thinking of seafoam but ATF didnt cross my mind... Maybe ill try ATF to see if it makes a difference
i have a 1.5 malibu 2017 did a headgasket job on it made sure timing was good and cams. but im getting a no start . only time it can start is when i spray brake cleaner in the intake .
Sounds like a fuel related problem. Are the injector plugged in? Figure out why the engine isn't getting fuel
2016 camaro v6 with 25K miles is giving me these codes, I have not neglected the oil changes always punctual on that, even use mobil 1 synthetic with dextos, what gives?
Is it just me look at 5:23 look at the duct to mass air flow it's soaked with oil blow-by she's toast lol😂😂😂😂
Frequent oil changes and clean gas that motor will clean out good after the chain and chain guides tentionerz and all that is replaced with spot on timing
People are mentioning seafoam or ATF to clean up the sludge. I wonder if it will work...
I just delt with this same issue with a customer.....gotta change ya oil and all fluids👍
Its sad that people run their cars into the ground from avoiding simple maintenance
@@themechanic6117 🙄😔
You got it a notch out
You're saying I got the timing wrong?
You should keep a "for sale" sign in your toolbox and leave it on people's dashes as a hint lol
😂😂 funny to my but im sure the owner wouldn't find ut funny lol
Hey neighbor
Good job. 👍👍
Hello my friend!
i got p0017 on an 2013 elantra, only 54k miles. I change the oil. Definitely something in the timing system, just not sure what or where to begin. Did everything I could myself in terms of sensors/solenoids/oil change.
Most likely the Dowel in the Camshaft Sprocket backed up into the Cam.
Check wiring first then replace the Timing Chain, Tensioner and Sprockets/Phasers
@@starcityrc3298 it ended up being completely unrelated. It was a bad piston or bearing or something
Flopped around causing that racket scoring the cylinder walls. Eventually lost compression to be able to start the car. Hyundai covering 50 percent of new engine even though it was out of warranty. Should have been recalled. It was in canada.
Where you located
I tell people in my sphere of influence that these newer cars are dependent on clean oil. High horsepower and compression in these small engines. Intake and exhaust solenoids suffer.
Very true, the oil galley on some of these cars are very small! Thats why some cars run oil like 0W-20
@@themechanic6117
My car takes 0W20. Newer cars now take 0W16.
I dont think ive even seen 0w-16 oil.thats interesting
cleaned off the solenoids for p0016, p0017 (wasnt caked like this one), and cam sensor for p0011, and lightly cleaned the throttle. d/c the battery. lights gone for p0016, p0017, and p0010.
It came back to tho. Real fix was replacing only the timing chain tensioner.
Another beauty of a car lol
Yes, well taken care of..... Well the owner is a 18 year old girl. Im sure maintaining her car isnt one of her priorities
@@themechanic6117 Probably not. My wife is well past that age and maintaining her car still isn't one of her priorities. She bought her Accord about 2 years before she met me and never changed the oil! This woman is a lawyer with 3 university degrees! lol
😂😂 i guess priorities never change lol. Well stay tuned since it looks like ill be putting new timing components on this car 😒
I totally agree with your thoughts, that engine is just not worth it. You don't want to marry that thing.... so great call on telling them no guarantee.
Unfortunately they want to replace the timing components instead of replacing the engine ....so stay tuned for this upcoming mess lol
My car is throwing these same codes and it runs perfectly fine, 70 on the freeway what could it be🤔
Really cool procedure putting a clamp meter around a bit of wire substituting the fuse. Not something I would have thought of but it's just plain obvious once you know. I don't have a scope but maybe I can measure my own fuel pump (or just the door light) with my cheap clamp ammeter, just to try it out. One question though - was that fuel pump really pulling 40 amps? Is that normal? Or was I just reading the scale on your display wrong?
Good job Jonathan! Poor engine needs a few oil changes! I wonder has one of the timing chain guides broken?
Yes im assuming a guide is broken causing the extra slack and making the noise. Ill be doing a timing job on this car soon
Sad to see people ignore preventative maintenance and end up having to pay more in the long run. Wow.
They dont want to pay for maintenance then when they have a big bill they complain about that
I think there's a lot of genuine ignorance. Definitely myself when I was growing up in the 80's & 90's - I never had friends who worked on their own cars, and my dad never taught me either. So I was never really aware of how engines worked and exactly where the oil went once you dumped it down that black hole in the top. Unless the car stopped working, as in this case, you just wouldn't be aware what damage was being done.
Growing up, our cars were always old second hand things, there was never an owners manual so I never even knew there was such a thing as a 'maintenance schedule'. I did sort of know that cars should have an oil change every 10,000KM (6k miles, mostly Japanese fleet in NZ at that time) but other than that I thought the mechanic was for repairs when your car broke down. Nobody ever told me about about preventative work !?
It's taken me a decade since I got my motorcycle license and decided I had to know more, to feel safe, to painstakingly sift through all the dross & misinformation on the net to even come to a reasonable understanding, and I'm in my forties now. You're right it's sad to see someone lumped with a big bill in the end, but I completely understand where it comes from.
I understand where you're coming from. Alot of neglect just comes from people not knowing. Thens theres the point that hear a noise and know something is wrong yet they just turn the radio of louder lol
Maybe if your gas prices were as high as ours people would take care of their cars. Gas mileage must suck on that thing 🤣🤣
😂😂 well stay tuned because ill be putting new timings components on this engine....fingers crossed lol
Good video. Not too long. Here's the question... Do we flush the engine hoping it dissolves all that crap and nothing gets plugged or just change the oil few times short interval....hmmmm too much goo. Change your oil people!!!! Thanks Jon.
Yes that the dilemma, not sure if trying to dissolve it with a chemical will cause more problems

What scan tool app are you using on your phone?
Its nkt my phone.its the actual scan tool. Its the launch diagun 4
@@themechanic6117 thanks for the quick reply, I really enjoy your videos
You're welcome.i appreciate you watching
Your best advice to a Malibu owner would be to get rid of the car and get a used Toyota or Honda.
Not many people in this area drive hondas or Toyotas. They love their American cars over here 👎
@@themechanic6117 American company cars with chinese parts lol
Exactly😂
i have a 09 toyota venza. it had the p0016 and p0017 code. i took it to 3 toyota dealers and 3 mechanics. no one can fix it. i replaced the oil control valve, ecm, oil change, camshaft position sensor bank 1,twice.. It got rid of the p0016 code but cant get rid of the p0017. any idea of what it could be. It drives fine. rpms might be slightly higher on highway but dont quote me haha. Any thoughts appreciated. F toyota. They dont stand behind there products. i spent 10 grand on repairs within the first 6 months of purchasing outright.
what is the model of that scan tool that you are using? the smaller handheld one in the beginning of the video.
Its the launch diagun 4 ($400-$600)
Typical GM’s needing timing chains in camshaft actuators
Yeah these things fail by themselves sometimes
Gotta fix the clock on that baby
Time for surgery !
Hello sir. I live in Turkey, my vehicle is 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 124 hp. It gives error code P0016. intake camshaft It had to change. The question I want to ask you is, are the 113 HP and 124 HP intake camshaft parts the same. Or are the parts of the two different, thank you in advance for your answer.
That code doesn't mean you have to change the entire cam shaft...
@@themechanic6117 Thank you❤️
Sea foam
That engine has certainly been neglected.
I showed the owner what it looks like under the valve cover and tried to stress how bad it is....owner doesnt even blink a eye at it ....its frustrating when the owner just doesnt understand/care
That looked like thick toffee goo under there :-)
You should of just replaced the timing system and changed the oil.
Watch the second follow up video to this...
just a note.....will the lack of oil changes you need to sell an engine....doing just the chain and other items will just come back to haunt you....
I'm not sure what you're saying. Sell a engine?
Sounds like shit needs repair
Check out the next video. It did get fixed
Ok
