Hello - got code of p0016 on my 2.0 Ecotec turbo engine so just the intake camshaft timing off with respect to crank shaft. Not getting code p0017 which would be the exhaust camshaft off too. So thinking then not timing chain problem say jumped as would get p0017 too. Replaced both camshaft actuators and still problem of rough engine and cel still showing just p0016. So could be the reluctor on intake camshaft or maybe the intake camshaft timing sensor - u think one of these most probably? Thanks for any ideas.

Excellent! Diagnostic skills deserving of a brain surgeon. I salute you for working for an owner who wants to do his own grunt work. Most shops want the customer to commit to have the work done or they will not share any diagnostic data. Of course, some of those shops are guessing and don't have the skills you have. Of course in the end the engine has to come down at least as to the timing "drive" gear level, which on these transverse engine layouts is a nightmare. Thanks for a great, informative video!

@@jamespn the average Joe or Jane can do this. Get a scope. Most techs already have one and don't use. If you have a Verus, a Modis, or even a Vantage... you have one. Just start playing around with it. Start on known goods... get out to training events. TST is in a 1.5 wk. Get on AES wave, order a John Thornton class which arrives on a USB.

That observation about the exhaust valve closing early, and what it means to the reality of the cam timing as opposed to the instrumentation, is truly the mark of a guru!

  • @Sandbag1300
    @Sandbag1300 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

You are getting spectacular at these diagnostic presentations! My bet is that only 15% of domestic auto mechanics in the USA use a scope in their diagnostics. The Pico compression analysis was very interesting. Confirmed advanced timing as the Exhaust valve opened before 180 degrees, in your diagram at 25:12, thus drawing a vacuum in the cylinder on the piston down stroke and the exhaust valve closed before 360 degrees, in your diagram at 25:12, which built up pressure in the cylinder before the intake valve opened at 360 degrees for the down stroke of the piston. Neat stuff! (I am not a mechanic).

Working flat rate, most of the time you're only going to get paid an hour to diagnose a problem. Pulling out the scope setting it up there's at least 10 minutes right there. If you were a mechanic you would understand why we don't spend what little precious time we have to use a scope and be 110% sure of our diagnosis every time. It's pull in the car, find the problem as fast as you can, pull it out, on to the next one. Otherwise you will go home poor.

I was especially amazed by the second half of the video where you demonstrated the use of the pressure transducer. What a gold mine of information the waveforms from the transducer produced. Hey Eric, as usual I always enjoy your videos. One tip I want to share to you and everybody else is with the tech 2 cam data. This has worked on multiple impalas with me, if you have a timing code. Clear the code just like you did but DONT start the engine yet, pull up your cam data first then start and run the engine. Your desired and actual cam positions PIDS will display for a very brief moment (3-4 seconds maybe)until the codes trip again and then it will all defaults to 0 just like in the video. I’ve seen this fooled many many people

Then give the customer some dumb story - the car is old , it was was worn out anyway or it's a layered problem . The best one " the car can't be fixed " . What's wrong with it - " I don't know " . How do they get away with it ? Beware ANY auction vehicles ! Nice diagnosis . Training and tools , the scope , are an investment !

Good stuff man! Boy does in-cylinder pressure testing make a compression gauge look dated! Amazing the things you can see in there. Never used one in person, but learning from all you guys out in TH-camLand - I did notice the pressure where there should have been vacuum, when the piston was on its way to BDC. A window into the engine! Great to be able to learn these things before I even own one.
Wish the auto industry would use Apple products instead of buggy, glitchy Microsoft products. Can't download the PICO software on the iMac ... 😞
I've been sold on a scope for a long time now .. but then I get into these occasional dry spells where I get no drivability jobs coming in (like now), and then I continue putting it off. I'll get one eventually. I can justify the expense just having it for my own vehicles. Same with the J-box. Just pains me that I'll have to buy another PC to make it all happen. Windows drives me nuts! I seem to spend more time fixing its problems than I do benefiting from its use.
I actually have no paying work today. Have 3 lawn tractor jobs I can't get to, thanks to the broken truck. Going to finish working on getting the Viair air compressor system leak free in preparation for the OX Locker. Fixed a bunch of leaks yesterday that I've been meaning to get to for 4 years now. Now to get out there and see what the pressure is after 17 hours - hoping it's the same as when I left it. Maybe I'll pull the axles today and install the new seals, and also install a couple motion lights on the shop that I've been meaning to get to for the past year. :)

    Dr. O,
I started watching your channel about a year ago and had to go back and start from the very beginning. I immediately began to suspect you and your wife are Christian-by your integrity and how you conduct yourselves and your business. I appreciate that I can watch your informative, humorous, and always entertaining channel with my boys, which I would not be comfortable doing with some other channels. You and Vanessa are wonderful role models! I hope if I'm ever accused of being a follower of the Lord I will leave enough evidence to be convicted...
    God bless!

Excellent information, I happen to own the same car but white in color. These also seem to have issues with the BCM connectors needing di-electric grease on the C2 connector near the front passenger floorboard. Symptoms of this can cause your brake lights to be illuminated when you are not on the brakes. Also, the brake lights will turn off when you apply the brakes...Also...Can make your thermostat gauge not work as well as the A/C Compressor.

Nice call Eric... replace the chain, all of the guides, actuators, phasers, and the tensioner... With ~144,000 on the clock just replacing the actuators and leaving the other components with probable wear will just leave the time bomb ticking... 💣 (I'm not sure if you're going to mess with the balance shaft chain and tensioner)... But I like to do that too while I'm there...☝ good stuff Mr. O.....

Nice video Eric! I've always liked your channel, you take a problem and walk us through step by step in the diagnostic process and then if and when you get the job, take us step by step through the repair. I have to admit you make it look so easy but for me probing the ECM is so scary, cause like you said, if you probe the wrong one or cross the probes with a full 12 volts you just had a bad day. New ECM here we cum. Love watching you do this stuff. I've learned so much, thanks for sharing......

Great video. I hope you get the OK to do the timing chain on that 2.4 LE5 as I have an 07 Chevy Cobalt with that same engine. The car just flipped 75k miles and am not yet too concerned about the chain on it. But do plan on doing the chain on it when the engine hits 150k regardless if it needs to be changed or not as those are interference engines. The engine being an interference engine probably why valve timing can't be adjusted when those DTCs pop up because doing so might cause the valves to hit the pistons and now an easy fix just got worse. It's also a 5 speed, so when the clutch needs to be changed, I then plan on to take the engine and trans out and replace the clutch and chain at the same time if the chain hasn't been changed at that point. I take good care of my Cobalt and plan on driving it until the wheels fall off not because of rust, as I live in the south, but because of mileage or was wrecked.

Sceeams to me crank swnsor but ive replace the crank and both cam sensors. Wont throw while idleing, just on start up. Looked at cam sprocks or where the sensors read, and they are good, chain is tight and cams aee still in time,i can slide the tool in the back of them. I cant make the accuators, accuate with a scanner, because of the codes.. i used a GM crank sensor,so no generic sensors. Ive worked on a few of em,but this one has me stumped.
