    I put solvent in the chamber after seat cutting. With proper sealing it can sit all night and not a drop will leak. I always slam the valve from the rocker side with a fist size hammer about 5 times to mimic the rocker opening and closing the valve This really seats the valve after assembly (it's a must) then I check with solvent. I do seat width by the book. Typical machine shops cut wide (often 2 or 3 times factory width) and rarely correct. Used to be a machinist in my area. Nickname was "45 degree Lee".
    Wide contact surfaces work but don't seal for long. Start narrow and they get wider with use. Start wide and ...

    The problem is that you’re checking it the wrong way. Go to a machine shop and have them pull a vacuum test on it or pour some solvent into each ex. and intake port then check for leaks.

      For a indian video this method will suffice. I have seen worse but this method seems to work just fine as there is tension from the springs holding the valves against the seats. Seemed to work on the first one

  • @LowProOperator
    @LowProOperator ปีที่แล้ว +19

    That’s the wrong way to test it. You’re pushing against the valve spring. Of course it’s going to open slightly. The air has to go somewhere. The best way to test. It is to put water down the runners and see if it leaks out of the valves. If it does, then you have a valve issue. I just recently confirm this on my own Cylinder Head jeep wrangler 3.6. I had low compression and cylinder two so I pulled the head and the exhaust valve looked a little burnt up. When putting water on the compression side, there is no leak, but when I put water inside the runner and let it sit on its side I could see water pouring out of the exhaust valve with no added air pressure

    • @oneplumpboi5317
      @oneplumpboi5317 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Valve spring seated pressure is greater than the air hose. I hate this logic with a passion. It's fine.

    • @DS-mo6md
      @DS-mo6md 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@oneplumpboi5317 yeah i was hand lapping my valves and was using this method.. if bumped or moved the slightest would bubble but for the most part even the weight of the valve itself with no spring wouldnt bubble.. if i applied the slightest hand pressure it wouldnt.. anyone that seemed iffy ( like one intake i poured water on top and immediately got dripping) I would just re lap and it seems doing this a second time got much smoother. Seems like you can easily have grind compound on the seat or valve to so when water is in the chamber i will spin the valve and it gets nice and smooth. I'm using like 35 year old heads so cant be too careful lol But I think for the most part as long as liquid ( best to use a thin solvent like gas ) can just sit in the chamber especially with the valve un sprung compression is fine... Im pretty certain that valves slapping the seat also laps them in further anyway as they have a tool that does this. So if you get a good seal hand lapping i assume that after running the seal is better

    • @oneplumpboi5317
      @oneplumpboi5317 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DS-mo6md I'm no expert on valve lapping as I have yet to try it on my many engines, but I'm heavily invested in buying some new valve seat cutters to attempt it on my scrap heads before I move on to my high-performance engines.
      I believe the lifting and slapping motion is not necessarily slapping, but rotating the valve so it's not just lapping on one side per se, since spinning the valve is only a 180+ degree lap usually.
      There are some pretty good write-up information out there that gives you heads-up on things to watch for, such as the sealing surface only being 1/3 of the 45-degree valve angle and usually as close to the centre.

    David , I was thinking the same thing .
    Since compression pushes the valves the opposite direction .
    It seems it would not take much to push them open by applying pressure as in this clip .
    I used to pour gas in each chamber and then time it to see not only Wich one is leaking but to do a leak down test of sorts .

      You would need more air pressure than spring rate. This head probably has over 150lbs of spring pressure. I do this same test all the time with about 25psi of air pressure. After the head is cleaned and the valves are lapped you will not see bubbles any longer.

    I’m not so sure this is a good test; when the engine is working, the pressure over the valve is in the opposite direction, and that helps to seal the combustion chamber. The pressure as your test is showing some kind of supercharging, like a turbo. In this case, you will need stronger valve springs in order to obtain a good seal… saludos!

  • @walkerclinedinst2820

    • @starbodyworksindia
      @starbodyworksindia  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot more pressure than this in the intake manifold when the engine is running. So is the fresh charge always seeping into the combustion chamber? How would that affect the 4 stroke cycle?

    • @walkerclinedinst2820
      @walkerclinedinst2820 ปีที่แล้ว

      @STAR BODY WORKS there is never "alot more pressure" than the compressed air you are using in an intake manifold while the engine is running... in most gasoline engines there is a vaccum in the intake unless you have a turbo or procharged system and then you will have a positive pressure in the intake but you will never have an instance where your intake has 100psi in it while your engine is running under normal conditions lol

    • @starbodyworksindia
      @starbodyworksindia  ปีที่แล้ว

      We're just blowing air here. Not more than a pressure of 30 psi I guess. The port side wasn't sealed so no pressure built up there. The springs are still holding the valves tight.

An engine valve design hold pressure in the cylinder quite effectively however pressure from the opposite side that design is horrible! Good thing it never has to do that!
