I'm not looking at boom arms right now but currently building my first home studio & just wanted to drop by your most recent video & give a big thanks for what you do. I've found myself watching your videos for just about every piece of equipment i've looked at so far and i'm sure others do the same so from all of us, thank you.
In Malaysia, the $14 costs $4, The $40 costs $18, The $70 costs $45. But the Rode one remains the same around $100. The Gator Frameworks costs less than Rode, which is around $78.
The best value would be Samsons boom arms. I just recently got the 48 inch one. The build quality is on par with the PSA1. The best part is the overall value considering the price. If you have a huge desk and need to run your mic over a wall of monitors, give their 48 inch one a look.
I've had the Røde PSA1 for years. I too found that it would move every now and then. I just tighten the pivot points the slightest amount and that fixed my issue, it now holds all the time and is still easy to move.
Rode also have the PSA1+ these days which is an improved model but very similar. It's able to do VERY light mics (95g+) but also supports heavy ones. It does cost some more and the original is still good. Just FYI for everyone.
I personally use a RODE PSA1+. I gotta say, it serves well between the max weight capacity and the built-in cable managment, it serves really good for $130
I've had the same exact $14 mic arm attached to my blue yeti for 3 years now and it's still in the same exact condition as when I bought it. It gets the job done and I highly recommend it for anyone on an extreme budget although that being said I am upgrading to the $99 rhode arm for my new shure sn7b mic but for a budget the $14 one is a great option
when mine came in, the top could not handle the weight of my at2020 and the mic itself just dangled flaccidly. also the part that connected to the desk snapped off
Thank you for talking about the extension of the boom arms! I needed something longer than the 28in from the Neewer one. The 38in reach from the Melon arm is exactly what I need!
The neewer arm is alright. Hard to complain for $14. It's much noisier than the premium options and the rotation is a bit janky. But its light springs actually work better for light dynamic mics, such as sm58. I upgraded to the Rode arm and it's much better with heavier mics.
I've had that Neewer arm for 5 years, and it's still going! Now using an Aston Spirit on it. BUT, it's a nightmare to use. Makes loud clanky noises, and mics with a shock mount will 'droop' very easily. Thanks for the comparison!
ive had the same mic arm for less than a month and its already broken. The bottom part that slots into the clamp cant support the weight of the neewer nw7000 that I use with the mic arm and because of that the metal at that part bends under the weight and after i bent it back into place a few times the metal split and now if i bend it back too far the metal will completely rip off. Also the thing that tightens the shock mount is broken and constantly untightens if i even slightly nudge the mic
@@Radicaldude Wow. Mine isn't by Neewer, but it's an identical model. The QC is probably awful. Mine loosened over time, the metal mic screw turns infinitely/doesn't tighten fully, and it droops easily. I got the $40 option and it's fantastic. Holds my heavy Aston Spirit, grips the desk well, very stable and easy to position the mic anywhere. And no loud springs :)
Great video, I have something to say about the 69$ boom arm tho. I was using this exact model but with another branding on it for the last like 2 years and I loved it... untill the metal cable inside the arm snapped and made the arm completely unusable. When I went back to the amazon page to see if anybody else had these problems it seems that I was pretty lucky that the metal cable didn't break earlier. So I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I feel more comfortable having a cheap springloaded arm where I could even change out the springs if they ever show signs of wear.
The $14.00 Neewer Boom Arm can be easily strengthened with slightly stronger springs, or adding an additional spring, and maybe some better screws if needed. (I enjoy improving good products to make them better). I have 3 of them. One is supporting a double set of SM-58 mics on a 7" cross bar, and when extended, it supports them just fine after a slight modification. For the money the Neewer Boom arm works just fine for my set ups.
I wanted to get the Gator boom arm but didn't like that the xlr cable came built in. So I got the Blue boom arm and have been happy with the quality. Had it for a year.
I personally recommend the 14 dollar stand for anyone who has a temporary setup. I have a samson q9u, a decently heavy mic, and the stand is handling the mic pretty well(had it for over 2 years). The reason why is bc I know at any moment I need to move to new house to live in, so I don't want to bring a stand with me everywhere i go. So the 14 dollar stand is literally good enough to hold my mic and if I move to a new place, I won't feel too bad to throw it away or give it away. And if I move to a new place I can just buy a better stand or buy the same stand base on how long I know I'm staying at the new place.
I've watched a whole load of these comparison videos now and not one has addressed the single most important factor for me! How well does the boom arm isolate against mechanical noise transmission from the desk? I tried the Neewer and my mic was picking up my keyboard, mouse clicks and even my arm resting on the desk! I'd like reviewers to cover this aspect. I want a boom arm, and don't mind paying for one that works, but I can't afford to pay over a hundred bucks if it has the same problem!
I'm using the one from "Pietvoss" which had cost me 45€ here in Germanistan 3 years ago and is very similar to the one from Melon. Bearing a Behringer TM1 including the shockmount and popfilter = about 700grams, no problem, can even hold an additional DT770Pro if wanted. They are sold out tho, dunno if they get back in stock, but if they come back, you cant go wrong with those (exceptions apply as the comments tell you)
About the Blue Compass. If the microphone you use is within the weight range of the arm, you can adjust the spring inside to handle it _(the spring is adjust with a screw inside the part that goes into the base),_ so you don't need to tighten the joints when you move it into position. Just move it around as you wish, _(except for completely collapsed or completely extended so it's flat or straight),_ and it will stay where you leave it. I've used mine since 2019 and the spring system works just like it did when I got it, and I move it around several times a day.
I sometimes use the blue compass for streaming dj sets, and i have to say, its terrible or anything that isnt a mic mounted to it. The adjustments dont hold well unless theres weight on it, and one of them just straight up broke on me today. Gonna try the gator to see if itll be better for my needs.
I used to use one, they I realized that it just takes up space and isn't really needed. All you need is a mic stand. Boom arms are more for people that are don't podcasts, professional audio, and so on. But even then, a lot of them don't use them anymore because they don't really do much. And, if you don't have a desk with open sides, you can't even use 90% of them. You have to drill a hole in your desk to use it. I found no difference from using the regular stand and a boom arm. I use a "dead cat" wind filter for my fan, an a shock mount on the simple tripod stand. It works great and is out of the way. I can move it to the side of me and and works just fine.
ive had a total of 3 or 4 mic arms in total. idk what brands, or what kind they were, but ik two of them were the same brand, and the last one that i still have is a good bit more expensive, but not over 50 or 60 bucks. i had one where the metal part straight up snapped at the part that slots into the table clamp. then, the two that were the same kind both snapped at the base where the mic arm slots in, and the last one i bought ive had for well over a year and never had a single problem with it.
Hi great video, but I. My experience in my studios, please always use boom arms with a wall mount bracket , that is best no sound will be transferred up the arm from table. Or floor. Million times better. Keep up the great videos
If you’re professional, spend twice $130 and get an OC white boom arm. At the radio station where I work there’s several examples that are from the 1950s, and from the 1920s at a nearby one, and they all work perfectly.
one of the major limitations to mic boom arms are there are types of desk that will not for clops. the desk with very thin to no trim on the side and back. this usually with desk with a hutch and another down factors is that most clamp are vertical. so, you don't have a anywhere to clamp it vertically. you're screwed.
Gator frameworks 4000 with the on air tally light on the mount and the deep set locking cable channel is the best. Got one used for $45 when its almost always between $119-169. The on air tally light makes it for me.
If you need a heavy boom for a Shure SM7b save yourself the time and headache and get a rode psa1+ The psa in this video is the best of them all and the psa1+ is their upgrade version which is more robust and designed to dampen vibrations going up the arm to the microphone. If your paying 400-500$ for a microphone you might at well spend 130+$ on the only good boom arm for it. Be wary of "cheap" alternatives. You get exactly what you pay for and if you cheap out your just gonna end up paying more because your buying TWO mic arms. The first one that breaks and the good one later. Only buy the cheaper, weaker mic arms if you are paring it with a lightweight condenser mic.
One bit of advice - whatever you get, don’t get the blue compass boom arm. The built quality is not on par with the price tag and the tension is just too much for sm7b even making it very hard to adjust or requiring you to put more weight on it. And if you try to tighten the joints you will break them.
I bought the Gator awhile ago, my only problem was that it will only let you address the mic from below the arm. You can't rotate the head to get the mic on top which didn't work for me.
ive been using a cheapo arm for about 6 months and the only issue i had was the threaded adapter that connects the shock mount to the arm stripped out. but sweetwater had a metal adapter for 3 bucks. been fine since. i use it 40 hours a week.
Some good ones I've seen around Amazon Donner Boom Arm $55 (Reviews are hit or miss but it seems solid at a glance, for the price!) Samson MBA38 $41 to 50 bucks. A competitor to the Rode Boom arm. Only holds up to around 2.5kg though. That's the thing. Rode can hold 4.4 but again. It's double or more than double the price. Elgato High/Low Profile boom arm. $100. This one is really unique because it has a "Riser" which can elevates the arm by another 150 mm / 5.9 inches so for some people, they will attach that and can put it over their monitor from the back of the desk.
I have the 14 dollar one, and its lasted 4 years, but I just got a rode podmic, and the arm just isn’t strong enough to hold it up at the angle I need. So went with the rode arm.
Im using the PSA1 with the quadcast s, which is about 400 grams mic with the shock mount. It stays in place, and it doesnt move, you can tighten the joints a bit if your arm is going up. There's no need for a heavy mic on this arm.
I've heard the Samson MBA38 is very similar in build quality to the RODE PSA 1 and it's like half the price but Rode can hold 4.4 KG and the Samson only holds 2.5 KG.
I just saw someone who said they went from the Rhode Boom arm to the Elgato High Profile arm and that it ended up being better so this is awesome to see you liking that one so much here lol.
I personally have the small problem that I can’t find a good position to mount my arm so I can see my vertical monitor on the left the rgb of my pc on the right and main monitor as well as the keyboard. Sure I could practice 10 finger typing to blindly find keys but I want to see everything which seems impossible sadly. I mean I could raise it up and away from me but I’d have to increase the gain and the voice won’t be as crisp and clean. Using the Rode Arm with a NT-1A pop filter and shock mount
Lighter mic arms/ cheaper r for smaller and thinner ones while more expensive mic arms $50 and up are for the bigger and thicker mics like blue yeti blackout :)
I cant find any resources on the thread(mounting screw). My samson q2u doesnt fit into my old boom arm, the hole is too big. Do I need to get a new boom arm all together or can I just somehow replace the screw? Nothing from the q2u package has anything to put it into a boom arm.
Was yours creaky? Mine came out of the box pretty creaky and I ordered a new clamp because the creaking for me might come from either there or from the middle area.
Great video man. I’m sure you know but now Elgato has come out with two different boom arms and would love to see you review those as well. Elgato usually makes quality stuff so I think it will be up there with the Rode and Gator in terms of quality, but we’ll see!
ive had the same $17 arm for 5 years and am only looking at this vid because im wondering the average life-span of these arms are. my springs havent worn and even if they did im pretty sure a trip to the hardware store for springe is cheaper than a new arm
These guys make FANTASTIC, fairly-priced mic stands, HOWEVER, assembly for the big boom one is NOT for the faint-hearted. It literally takes two mechanical engineers about 40 minutes to assemble the 25-odd parts! SO, BE AWARE; YOU MAY HAVE TO HIRE AN EXPERT TO ASSEMBLE ONE FOR YOU! I am totally serious. It is too new for this video, fresh form China's ingenious engineering at Ultimate!
Hope this helps anyone whos buys the cheap one, get a nice drill bitt that fits in the center that holds it all up. it'll never bend again. 2nd lol.. I just didn't like after buying it my headphone could drag it down if it was away from me so I cut the spring a bit shorter and now it's more than strong enough..
The sheet metal on the interface between the arm and the desk mount on my neewer is completely bent/unuasable. Its unable to support the weight of my rode podmic.
i’ve used the neewer boom arm and the gator frameworks (new model). probably just bad luck, but the gator frameworks broke after about 2 weeks of VERY light use. i moved the arm and the middle pivot point and bottom pivot point’s side plates broke off and the hardware popped out. the hardware for the middle ended up deforming so i couldn’t put it back together. though i must say the way the cable is managed on the new model is intuitive and i miss that. previously had the neewer arm and it’s going strong some 4-5 years later, but the springs make noise when i move it as it catches on the rest of the arm
wow, i've had the gator one for about 2 weeks as well. the exact same thing happened to me. was pulling the mic toward me and the middle hinge just broke
i have the 15 dollar boom arm and it failed in the post that the table mount goes in and it kinda worries me that it looks like all of these use the same mounting hole and post, or at least very close
hi Edward, can any of these be clamped to a shelf to hold a light or camera? I want an overhead rid and thought one of these would be ideal of it clamps properly to my shelf. Please get back to me thanks
If I have a desktop that is 7 cm thick, any of these microphone arms will work for me. I am having a very big problem with my current desk, and that is that most of the grippers come up to 6 cm at the most.
I know it's a long shot for you to look at this comment, but have you ever had any issues with your Rode Podmic picking up desk sounds when on the PSA1 specifically? I've bought a used PSA1 to replace my old Neewer arm. But for some odd reason, it picks up desk noise and keyboard from time to time when talking on Discord. That issue never happened with the Neewer, with the exact same setups. Even tried with two different desks, so I'm completely lost and frustrated.
I have a Tonor t20, and it’s holding up my yeti and shock mount for said yeti, its been pretty darn good its got clamps to lock it down and has a headphone holder on the clamp
@@EdwardSmithMusic Thank you. Then I should probably look away from boom arms and towards desktop stands like Rode DS1. In fact, if my NT USB Mini would work with DS1, my problem might be solved.

I have a Samson boom arm that costs 35$ and it’s held up very well with an MV7X. In my opinion you don’t need a very expensive boom arm.

Good explanation man. You are a decent content creator!
What is a good boom arm for fifine k669b?
The Melon Audio is super!!
I bought the Gator awhile ago, my only problem was that it will only let you address the mic from below the arm. You can't rotate the head to get the mic on top which didn't work for me.
True!!
Great recopilation!
Glad you enjoyed it
What boom arm do you suggest if I use it for my AT2020 mic and a vocal isolation booth?
same questiom
@@smilysheep7520 been a month and nobody answered lol :(
@@smilysheep7520 altho I already bought myself a boom arm that supports up to 4lbs or 3lbs idk
I had same questions
Love the channel, I'm a content creator and a Podcaster and i really needed to see this video.
ive been using a cheapo arm for about 6 months and the only issue i had was the threaded adapter that connects the shock mount to the arm stripped out. but sweetwater had a metal adapter for 3 bucks. been fine since. i use it 40 hours a week.
This is a good quality video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Some good ones I've seen around Amazon
Donner Boom Arm $55 (Reviews are hit or miss but it seems solid at a glance, for the price!)
Samson MBA38 $41 to 50 bucks.
Nice vid ed, the blue compass is nice
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
I have the 14 dollar one, and its lasted 4 years, but I just got a rode podmic, and the arm just isn’t strong enough to hold it up at the angle I need. So went with the rode arm.
Im using the PSA1 with the quadcast s, which is about 400 grams mic with the shock mount. It stays in place, and it doesnt move, you can tighten the joints a bit if your arm is going up. There's no need for a heavy mic on this arm.
Awesome info. Great explaining w clarity.
I've heard the Samson MBA38 is very similar in build quality to the RODE PSA 1 and it's like half the price but Rode can hold 4.4 KG and the Samson only holds 2.5 KG.
Grear review. Bought the Gator. Thanks
Great choice 💪🏻
I just saw someone who said they went from the Rhode Boom arm to the Elgato High Profile arm and that it ended up being better so this is awesome to see you liking that one so much here lol.
I made the mistake of going cheap at first, thinking, like, it doesn't affect the audio, but... it can still break. Røde worked well.
Using the Rode Arm with a NT-1A pop filter and shock mount
i like the Gasp type beat
I like the Blue Compass arm but am curious if it would be good for the Bullet USB Microphone. Please.
Thank you Edward, very good rewiew 🙋🏼♂️
Lighter mic arms/ cheaper r for smaller and thinner ones while more expensive mic arms $50 and up are for the bigger and thicker mics like blue yeti blackout :)
Great job and very helpful on this review as well as the others you do. Thank you. How about a review of studio/recording/performing practice chairs?
Thanks!! Great video ideas 💪🏻
Thanks for this Edward, was looking for a mic arm and this was super useful!
Awesome!! Thanks for watching!! 🙏🏻
Supporting you with the links 😌 thx for these videos!
Thank you so much!
You can adjust the Rode boom arm tension.
Oh wow… didnt know 👌🏻
Great video man. I’m sure you know but now Elgato has come out with two different boom arms and would love to see you review those as well. Elgato usually makes quality stuff so I think it will be up there with the Rode and Gator in terms of quality, but we’ll see!
I came here hoping to see the El Gato as well
ive had the same $17 arm for 5 years and am only looking at this vid because im wondering the average life-span of these arms are. my springs havent worn and even if they did im pretty sure a trip to the hardware store for springe is cheaper than a new arm
Can hear a South African from across the continent boet! Keep up the good work! Lekker
Thanks for watching!!! 🇿🇦
Did the PSA-1+ not exist when this video was made ?
That 99$ boom arm is so good looking nice video keep it up
What about keyboard
i’ve used the neewer boom arm and the gator frameworks (new model).
probably just bad luck, but the gator frameworks broke after about 2 weeks of VERY light use. i moved the arm and the middle pivot point and bottom pivot point’s side plates broke off and the hardware popped out. the hardware for the middle ended up deforming so i couldn’t put it back together. though i must say the way the cable is managed on the new model is intuitive and i miss that.
previously had the neewer arm and it’s going strong some 4-5 years later, but the springs make noise when i move it as it catches on the rest of the arm
wow, i've had the gator one for about 2 weeks as well. the exact same thing happened to me. was pulling the mic toward me and the middle hinge just broke
i have the 15 dollar boom arm and it failed in the post that the table mount goes in and it kinda worries me that it looks like all of these use the same mounting hole and post, or at least very close
Is there a specific one you have to get to hold the mic?
hi Edward, can any of these be clamped to a shelf to hold a light or camera? I want an overhead rid and thought one of these would be ideal of it clamps properly to my shelf. Please get back to me thanks
I actually use the Melon Audio boom arm as an over head camera stand for my videos.
If I have a desktop that is 7 cm thick, any of these microphone arms will work for me. I am having a very big problem with my current desk, and that is that most of the grippers come up to 6 cm at the most.
New boom arm: gets released
Edward:
I know it's a long shot for you to look at this comment, but have you ever had any issues with your Rode Podmic picking up desk sounds when on the PSA1 specifically? I've bought a used PSA1 to replace my old Neewer arm. But for some odd reason, it picks up desk noise and keyboard from time to time when talking on Discord. That issue never happened with the Neewer, with the exact same setups. Even tried with two different desks, so I'm completely lost and frustrated.
And another one! 🔥🔥🔥
Can any of these boom arms be wall mounted? Thx
Is there...a white one that is kinda big but no so much and resonably priced?
I have a Tonor t20, and it’s holding up my yeti and shock mount for said yeti, its been pretty darn good its got clamps to lock it down and has a headphone holder on the clamp
would I be able to put an Aston halo microphone filter on a mic stand like this? Or would it be too heavy?
Do all boom arms come with desk clamps? Is there an option for a heavy base desk stand with extending arm?
They all come with desk clamps… the heavier and longer the arm, the bigger and stronger the clamp.
@@EdwardSmithMusic Thank you. Then I should probably look away from boom arms and towards desktop stands like Rode DS1. In fact, if my NT USB Mini would work with DS1, my problem might be solved.
My personal favorite is the Elgato Low Profile
so why are some of your hs monitors horizontal ? looks cool but they aren't designed to be i thought
looking at all the option and not happy the arm will end up in front of my screeen according to arm extension and flexibility.
Is the way boom arms work, like you screw on ur mic or attach it somehow or idk
They clamp to your desk
What is that little attachment called on the microphone that makes it point towards you I need one of those
Can the blue compass boom arm hold a Shure sm7b microphone?
Yes it can. It is my least favorite out of the arms TBH... it's just tooo stiff 🙄
Sir...im messaging from the Caribbean. is the Melon boom arm still available?. I'm not finding it on Amazon
I did contact them. They are stocking up their Amazon store in the next week or two... so just wait a little bit 🙏
