    You know, I must have watched 10-15 videos on these arms. This video is by far the best comparison of them (and the gator frameworks which was unknown to me before this video). You researched and covered nearly all aspects of the arms and how to adjust them (specifically for the Compass, something many other videos failed to do) and your honesty with your bias was appreciated. I was leaning towards the compass but you’ve swayed me to save a bit of money and go for the more solid performer over looks. So thank you for your help! 😊

      I’m glad to hear it! For what it’s worth, I gave the compass to my wife after this video, but she quickly got annoyed by how difficult it can be to position, so I swapped it with a Rode and she loves it. The ease of use of the Rode really stands out after using another arm.
      Now I use the Compass as an overhead boom, which works well since it likes to stay high.

    For the blue: If you balance the mic with the tension knob the bottom, then adjust the friction points the Blue will stay in whatever position (read: every position) you put it in. It’s in the instructions that came with the arm. Mine is balanced perfectly with a Shure SM7B, which is lighter than your pod mic. Your tension is to tight or your friction is too loose if it springs up in any postion. It took all of 2 minutes to get mine perfect.

    There are two things that always stick out to me about your channel:
    1. You have some of the best formatting for these types of videos. Great time stamps, you give a short summary of the outcome before going into the details, and it's broken out really well.

    I bought the Gator Boom Arm because it can lock in place. I have a noise shield, pop filter, shock mount and a Shure SM7B microphone attached to the arm and it holds the weight really well. So if you have heavy attachments on the arm be sure to get a boom arm that can support the weight or has a tightening mechanisms on it.

    I was given a Blue compass and it took longer setting up the arm tension than it did to setup the rest of my work from home desk. The arm sits over my laptop and when I need to use it for a call, I can pull the mic down and the arms do not swing back. This took forever to figure out as the arms were swinging all over the place but if you have one of these, definitely put in the time to get the tension setup for what works for you.

      How? I have adjusted literally everything there is to adjust, and it still just swings all over the place. I've adjusted the knobs on each of the joints as well as the tension screw on the bottom. I've literally gone from all the way unscrewed to as far in as it'll go. I've literally spent hours on this thing and it will NOT hold a Blue Yeti, which is driving me nuts. I'm about to just return the thing

      @@Austneal honestly I’ve had the compass for a year now and regret not getting the psa 1. The problem with the compass is that you need a heavy ass mic. My mv7 isn’t heavy which is why I bought an extender to keep it down where I want it. It just sucks

      I have the blue compass and that's not what that knob does. None of the knobs change the spring tension, they only change the friction at each point. His issue was not at the last joint but it was the middle and first joints that were moving when he didn't want them to. Tightening those would help alleviate the issue.

    I had a blue compass boom arm and it was unable to stay in position and rose/sank as it pleased. The positioning you show in the video worked, but blocked my face for video. The integrated cable clips were also finnicky and eventually warped with usage. It lasted me about 6 months before I ended up throwing it out because of all the faults. The tension was horrible and I'm glad it was addressed in this video. This was well over a year ago and it's disappointing to see they haven't fixed these issues.

    DANGER CHRISTOPHER ROBINSON: Thank you Tom for this. I went with the Rode PSA1 for my Shure SM7B and I am so happy with it. I have one thing to say. If you are ordering from Amazon, make sure that your PSA1 does not ship from Amazon's warehouses but from the seller directly. It's just that if it ships from Amazon, there is a big chance that they have a warehouse process where the middle articulation gets pressured against something and it breaks. I got one like that and it comes with a broken cable plastic router and it squeaked a lot (a metal against metal noise). I had to send it back. I then read a lot of people complaining about the same when getting it directly from Amazon. I ordered on Amazon but I went to "Available from these sellers" and bought one that said "Ships from [seller]" not from Amazon. The second one was bliss.

      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ever thought of trying monitor arms? There's a colleague of yours who calls himself DSLR Shooter who demonstrates this rather cleverly. They take much more weight, they come with built-in cable management, they can be pushed out of the way when not in use and they only need a little modification - theoretically.

    I think that people don't understand how to adjust the Blue Compass. Mine's been in service for four months, now, and it's been perfect.
    I've got a Sterling Audio ST55 condenser mic on it: only 1.2 pounds. What I did was *loosen* (turn counter-clockwise) the tension screw at the base, nearly all the way out. (In fact: all the way out until it actually un-threaded, and then back in until it was just barely threaded.) At that point, I adjusted the pivot tension knobs.
    It stays exactly where I put it, now, without a single problem. I love it.

    I've honestly learned so much since first arriving here to watch a Podmic video once 'upun' a time. And I bought three, with a Rodecaster Pro, as a result (fourth pending, per aesthetic necessity). These days, I still learn a lot, but I admit I almost tune in as much, just for the cacophony of counting how many times you try (and mostly succeed) to be punny. It's a (mostly) productive and always positive part of my day.

    All the comments about the Blue Compass are
    correct , I use a HyperX microphone with the Blue compass and it sucks constantly trying to tighten it. You really need a pair of pliers to get it to stay where you want it, but you then run the risk of cracking the cheap plastic turn knobs.

    PSA: PSA1s are a bit hard to find right now. Be careful because there are some retailers (Helix Camera for instance) obfuscating their stock status. They will charge you then suddenly become hard to get a hold of. I had this experience with them specifically. They list "Available for Purchase" instead of telling you it's backordered.

    Tom, I'd love to see you review the Joby Wavo boomarm.
    I've seen a number of reviews, but none very in-depth, certainly not the Tom Buck treatment. The one standout in all these reviews is the Joby arm stays put wherever you place, just like the PSA1/1+ and unlike most boom arms I've seen reviewed lately including the Blue. Very solid/stable looking in every video I've seen. The only caveat I've noticed in these reviews is that the swivel has a bit of play in it and when the arms are closed all the way there seems to be a bind, but that's all the way closed which would not be a common position I'd go into or start out of (save for initial use).

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, I didn't even know this existed! Looks pretty interesting. I'm still waiting for an arm that genuinely gets the mounting point right. The Joby looks to have a lot of flexibility though, which is great.

Hence saving me some money because it is cheaper than the Blue Compass but works perfectly right out of the box.
