In Hualien, last week, I stayed at an AIRBNB on a farm. The owner distilled rice alcohol, rice wine, fruit wine and made his own sausage. He shared it all with us. Kind, loving, generous, beautiful experience.

7:25 - it’s the anxiety over the travel that makes it exhausting, no matter how long it takes - There’s nothing wrong with feeling tired even after only a short bit of travel - particularly when you add in the additional stimuli of lighting, noise & (at times) crowds!

If you go to Taroko gorge… one of my favorite places in the world… the last few times I stayed at the Liwu hotel. It’s near the entrance to the gorge. And there’s a train station closer to the gorge than Hualien. And near that station you can rent a motorcycle. This is my favorite way to go now. The gorge is kind of far from Hualien

6:22 Yeah, it is common for people to carry little package of tissue paper with them on the go. You can get them in every supermarket or convenience store, the flat pocket size tissue paper pack. Some public toilet have a small vending machine for tissue paper, I think I have seen vending machine on trains, too. I am not too sure.
It's probably a good idea for traveler in Taiwan to carry pocket pack of tissue papers. get a bunch in any supermarket, and its handy everywhere. can also be use as cushion in backpack when needed.

10:35 The shop is known for the running egg yolk. It's named "Bomb" Scallion Pancake. Because 'bomb' and 'fried egg' sounds the same in Mandarin.
Instead of onion, it is made with scallion/spring onion. Using the stem part of scallion, instead of the bulbil of onion. Scallion Pancake is popular all island around. While the scallion from the north-east county of Yilan is renowned and very good in fragrance.

    • @katekaft

Hello, what is the exact name of that shop please? I cannot find it under “Bomb scallion pancake” on Google maps. Thank you 😊

    • @mthsu

@@katekaft And don't be afraid to ask other customers there on how to get an order. Many people will glad to help out. As it can be more confusing at place like this.
Sometimes food stands have a more casual manner on queue. You can be too polite and not knowing when to order and ending up wating for nothing while others 'cut in line'. In this sense it is not really a rude cutting line. But just how the street stands work.
But if everyone there is politely in queue of course lets follow the queue too. I read maybe the shop will give you a number after you ordered. And you will pickup the food when they call out your number. If you can't understand Mandarin number very well, again just ask someone on the scene to help you with it. ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ

Too bad it was raining when you got to Hualien - but nothing extraordinary since Taiwan's East Coast gets a lot of rain.
And yes: it does feel like a different country when compared to the always busy and glitzy Taipei.
Personally I like Taitung even more than Hualien - laid back, a bit rough around the edges but perfect to recharge one's batteries.
No surprise that the trains were fully booked around LNY. I've had the same experience when it's tomb sweeping holidays.
And last November I wanted to change my habits and took an ordinary TRA train to Taichung rather than the HSR. Sunday afternoon, 2pm - fully booked, yould not get a reserved seat and ended up sitting for 30mins and standing for a full two hours. Won't be doing that again for sure...

Thanks for the videos of Taiwan. I really miss the place. I lived there from 1997 till 2002. Btw, January isnt the best time to visit Northern Taiwan because it's so cold and wet then (mid winter). Pity you didn't take the train right around the Island. I did that once after my Taiwanese girlfriend dumped me in the year 2000. I was originally going ride my scooter all the way around but after reaching Ilan city and having major mechanical problems I had to dump the scooter and jump on the train there. If you ever go back to Taiwan take the train all the way around and stop off at Kending in the southern tip. It's convenient because most towns and cities in Taiwan have cheap hotels beside the train station. And of course to save more money catch the slow (local) train. Cheers, Karl

You can find some that is very to customs (CIQ) at Johor. You can travel train (S$5 one way) or bus to Singapore. Not sure if it is good option for you all but definitely it is cost savings one.

Can't wait for you to go to Singapore, the country of my origin. I first found your channel when you visited there. I've been watching you since! Also, can't wait for you to go to Australia. I have many friends and relatives in Perth. I loved it there when I visited!

If you guys go to malaysia then singapore then to australia, you can buy a singapore airlines flight from KL to australia and i think they may allow a stopover in singapore. I think Singapore airlines is having a sale or promotional fares now... but read the terms and conditions. It might just be slightly more than a budget airline

Hahaha yup, it was Park Taipei. Nice place definitely, I think it opened in September '22 so everything is very new. Nice gym! The pool is closed for the winter though.
