I hope you guys are having a blast! I lived and worked in Taiwan a while ago. Taipei is an amazing city!
Go hike the 7 peaks (or some of it).
Take in the hot springs in the Beitou district. It will remind you of Japan.
Take an overnight trip to Toroko Gorge. You won't be sorry.

I absolutely love traveling in Taiwan. The train system from city to city around the island country is great. Miniatures Museum of Taiwan in Taipei is very unique and the Qianqi Seed Museum in Tainan City is a hidden gem. Sadly the Rainbow Village in Taichung is temporarily closed for renovations but keep it on your list for a future visit. The National Museum in Taipei is also very informative and has a beautiful garden too. Enjoy one of my favorite countries!!

Toroko National Park is well worth visiting. Hualien Coast is beautiful. Best Night Market for food is the Flower Night Market in Tainan City. Fo Guang Shan is a modern temple complex, but probably the most impressive in size and architecture in the country. If you want to get weird, go to the abandoned UFO village about an hour north of Taipei. Crazy place. Not too far from there is Yehliu Geopark which has gorgeous sandstone formations. You can do both of those places on the same day trip from Taipei.

Raohe Night Market was our favourite when we went. There is a popular pork bun stand near the entrance, the queues are massive and they bake it in these brick ovens. Delicious!

This brings back so many of the beautiful memories of visits pre-covid. Tnakfully I will be back to Taiwan in April. You already did some of the must do and see things in Taipei. Some recommendations? Night markets like Riufen or Shilin. Go to Ximending, trendy and great shopping. Go to the top of Taipei 101 at the end of the afternoon. Get both a daytime and nighttime view of Taipei. Magic!
Get yourselfs an Easycard for the public transport. Great value and you just load it with some cash. Should you have anything left on the card in the end? Claim it at any station. (Preferably at the airport and spend your last cash in the wonderful foodcourt or the 7-11.)
Before visiting Taipei 101 have lunch at Din Tai Fung in Xinyi street. The original one. It is really near Taipei 101. I would avoid the DTF at Taipei 101. A bit too touristy.
Go to Shilin and soak up the local atmosphere. Visit the National Palace Museum. Just a short walk.
Take the subway to Tamsui and walk around the old Tamsui street..
You foodies should definitely check out the Keelung night market. Probably combine it with a visit to Jiufen. Keelung is easy to reach by train. Trains are cheap and punctual.
For a better climate take the High Speed Rail (HSR) to Kaohshiung in the deep south. Again great night markets, but also a very nice harbour scene with lots of art. Certainly worth a few day visit.
As so many have already stated: Taiwan warrants a longer visit than just one week. Hualien and the Taroko gorge is a must visit, but also Taichung as the modern city and centre of the high tech semiconductor industry.
Anyway, have fun! I am sure you will enjoy yourself. Just one question: why was Cheveyo so mean in this episode? Sending Tia over to the shrine, crossing what must be one of the biggest squares in the world? Then deciding to visit the shrine of CKS and thereby making Tia cross that square again? Not sharing the beef noodle soup? Better beware, my friend! You are fighting a woman!
But whatever you guys do: enjoy the food. Don't forget the bubble tea.

11:28 Feel free to speak English with restaurant staffs all time. Most people understand some English, English is mandatory in basic schools. A lot of them can speak fine English. Maybe you will be surprised how many of them speak very good English.
Most staffs will try their best to help you even if they are not so good in English. So just try to ask for their help in English. A lot of the time if there is a guest who speak English in the shop, they may came to help, too. Taiwanese are exceptional friendly to English speaking foreigners. Ask for any help you need on the street whenever you need it. People will even go out of their way taking you to your location... etc

*Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Yilan, Taoyuan...etc ) is constantly rainy in the winter. To escape the rain, consider travel south more, southern Taiwan has much better climate in the winter. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Taiwan can feel even colder at some times, partly because of the humidity, partly because there are even fewer heating in buildings compares to Japan where many already complains the lack of heating.
But many parts of the southern Taiwan are great in the winter since you won't sweat like crazy like in other times of the year.

The roles have reversed, I've FINALLY been somewhere before you both have!
Good on you for checking out Liberty Square, that was one of my favorite places to check out. Taipei 101 is also INCREDIBLE. While you don't need to venture to the top of it, I highly recommend to just sit underneath it and bask in how massive it is.
Taipei has just about everything you'd want. This city doesn't sleep (except for breakfast time, they don't wake up until like 11am lol). So expect to have some late nights venturing out to anywhere. Public transport is really easy as you'll find out.
Night markets, night markets, night markets.
    Raohe Night Market
    Linjiang St Night Market
    Ningxia Night Market
    Shinlin Night Market
    Guangzhou Street Night Market
Taiwan Bubble Tea is the OG, best you'll ever have.
I know you came from Japan, but I had incredible Izakaya at Chimen Izakaya Restaurant in the Xinyi District. And there's a sushi place just around the corner from it. Both highly recommend. I wouldn't venture through Taipei plazas unless you like high end shopping. The window shopping is incredible though. The northern neighborhoods of Xinyi District have a lot of hidden alleyways of fun stuff. Dumplings are also incredible. While Din Tai Fung is available now many places, the original is located here and is really awesome.
If you're venturing the island, I'd recommend
Chiayi, get the Chicken Rice and Smart Fish (Fish Head Soup) while you're there.
Kaohsiung City. You may find a lot of nuggets of different northern/southern culture differences, especially cuisine.
I haven't been on the eastern side of Taiwan, but I expect a lot of dense jungle and nature worth exploring.
The people in Taiwan are hands down the nicest I've ever met. They're super outgoing and helpful.
One warning: rain gets intense, expect monsoons/typhoons. You will also likely experience air raid DRILLS in accordance with defenses against China. The whole city shuts down. Make sure to abide by the rules and go to your nearest shelter until the city bustles back to life. As you'll see, there are lots of mopeds, don't get in their way.
    HAVE FUN!

Rent bikes in either Danshui (north end of the red subway line) and ride all the way south to Xindian (south end of another line) Its a dedicated bike path, easy to follow, easy to rent bikes, and a great way to see the city and get some exercise. Also visit the fort near Danshui that was originally built by the Dutch in the 17th century.

Taiwanese breakfast foods are superb. There's something called 培根蛋餅 (péigēn dàn bǐng) which is effectively a bacon and egg burrito roll. Adding 起司 (qǐ sī) cheese as also often an option. You can find it everywhere in the mornings, including SE Asian style mobile street-food carts. Delicious!
Also try the doughnut sticks called 油條 (yóu tiáo) [yóu pronounced like 'yo'] with 豆漿 (dòu jiāng) a warm soy milk.

Since you are only there for a week, I would recommend the following :
Day trip : Jiufen, Shifen , travel by train.
Day trip/ 2 day trip : Hualien for Taroko Gorge (there are car tour/bus tour options that pick you up from Taipei to Hualien on klook). It's easier to travel to Hualien through those tour than commuting on the train.

@@randomtravel4361 I actually recommend a full day or at least a half day trip from afternoon to night time. This is because the red lanterns look so much better at night. Even the same brand that you find outside of Taiwan cannot match the quality you can get there. As for sightseeing, I'd recommend Jiufen, Shihfen, Hutong. Those are old villages around Taipei that are good for day trip.

✨BREAKFAST! Taiwan has an intense breakfast shop culture. A lot of people grab their breakfast at breakfast shops, stands to bring to work, school. The range to choose from is insane. From traditional pastry, western food, full meal with rice, noodles to almost everything. Many breakfast shops are titled XX soy milk shops. They usually serves pastry, rice balls, omelet, dumplings, fried bread, sandwiches and many many things, and of course, soy milk. Taiwanese soy milk is very very different to Japanese soy milk. You should give it a try. Beside the usual very sweet or none sugar soy milk, there is also a savory-sour soy milk soup.
✨✨When you are in Taipei, you can find some special breakfast stands selling rice noodle soups. They are called 米粉湯 or 米苔目. It's worth a try, to describe it, it is roughly like some kind of pork ramen, and many of them sells organ meat too. Make sure you order some good meat and organs too.
✨Each cities have their own breakfast culture. Some have stew pork rice, some have fried noodles, some have fish belly soup....
✨And one breakfast dish a lot of westerners love is Taiwanese omelet(egg pancake roll) 蛋餅 (Dan-Bing). They are everywhere in most breakfast shops.
✨And of course, Baozi, or 肉包. pork bum, that is also one big classic. and 水煎包... and 小籠包... good god there are too many choices....

🍗Fried Chicken. ✨✨1. KFC Taiwan is (not arguably) consider a lot superior to KFC in the US or even KFC Japan. The "Hot & Spicy" fried chicken is the go to item. It is with a much more crispy crust then the original flavor one. And the Egg Tart sold in KFC Taiwan is the classic. Some people consider egg tart the best item in KFC Taiwan, it is Portuguese style sweet tart.
✨✨2.Night market fried chicken cutlet, 雞排. This is the top item to try. It is a big flat cutlet with juicy inside and crispy outside. sometimes the size of your face. Style varies from shop to shop, try look up one with good review and try out! You may have seen these 雞排 in Japan, too. It's a trendy item from Taiwan that is popular in Japan this couple of years, like the popular drink Tapioca.

The two main sites I remember in Taipei and which I recommend are the Taipei 101 skyscraper and the National Palace Museum. This museum has the best collection of Chinese art in all of the world, as it contains all of the treasures spirited out of the Forbidden Palace in Beijing before the Communists took over. The thing I remember most in the museum was a large wall chart showing the massive timeline of Chinese civilization, and under it the rather short durations of the Persian, Greek, Roman, Spanish, British and to date American empires.
I suggest cutting back on the coffee and instead trying the various bubble teas. Bubble Tea was invented in Taiwan. The only problem is that most cafes that offer bubble tea also offer various tempting chocolate cakes, which the Taiwanese have acquired a love of despite it be not being a traditional Chinese food. I remember it as being very good.

@@OnePackWanderers Agreeing with Jonn. If you guys are in Taipei, def take the train to see the old mining towns of Pingxi, Shifen, Jiufen. Taroko Gorge’s natural beauty is beyond compare but you probably need to rent a scooter for that or take the bus from Hualien. For history, check out Tainan the oldest city in Taiwan. You can go there via HSR but public transport in Tainan is not great so you may have to also rent a scooter or take taxis.

Thanks so much for sharing your adventures. I was a frequent traveler to Asia before Covid and looking forwarde to getting back soon.
    My recommendations around Taipei
    - Houtong Cat Village
    - Maokong gondola for some views and tea
    - Bopiliao Old Street near Lungshan Temple
    - and of course Taipei 101
Hope that's useful and enjoy your time in Taiwan!

If you haven't already, you should try Ru Rou Fan 卤肉饭 (braised pork rice)
"Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice" does a really good bowl, and be sure to order a couple eggs with it! It's right near the Chiang Kai Shek big square you guys visited in this video. Like most good Taiwanese restaurants, the service is very brisk but the food is amazing.
Oh and a heads up, Taipei during lunar new year is completely dead and most places closed. I ended up having to eat McDonalds when I made the mistake of staying there for new year because nothing else was open. Everyone travels back to see their families for the new year so I'm guessing some of the smaller cities will have more going on. Hualien is a lovely place to stay just a couple hours by train away. Or Yilan is gorgeous too and even closer to Taipei

for a ~chill~ day and to escape all the scooters, I recommend wandering the alleys in daan district or minsheng neighborhood in songshan district! they’re full of cute cafes and lush tropical plants lining the streets. in minsheng neighborhood, you’ll also find the flagship store of sunny hills pineapple cake, and they serve you a complementary cake with tea!

🚄THSR, Taiwan High Speed Railway, is operating with Shinkansen N700 series train. It is almost identical to Shinkansen except some small variations. So you can see if you feel it is just like the Shinkansen when you ride one.
THSR, TRA, MRT are separate systems. So it can be confusing which gate you need to go to when you are at the main station.
Always ask anyone for direction, people are willing to help foreigners find their way in Taiwan.
The word for THSR is 高鐵. I don't know how to write that in English without misunderstanding😂, so you can maybe try learn that pronunciation on google translate, and it will be very easy to ask for direction. Just say 高鐵在哪裡?
    THSR(High Speed Railway) 高鐵
    TRA (Railway) 台鐵
    MRT (Metro) 捷運

    • @mthsu
      @mthsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

THSR and MRT (High Speed Railway and Metro) are super on time and reliable. While the TRA (normal railway) is not so much, so keep in mind their can be delay on TRA trains from time to time.
If you somehow miss a THSR train because your previous TRA train delay or anything like that. Just go to a staff, most of the time you can still get on a train without problem.
