Last time I was in Penang was 1982 so just over 40 years ago not much has changed which is good.
As for durian I've been eating it since the the 1970's & I'm not Asian I'm an Australian & I love it.

Penang has a special charm, I imagine it's like a mix of Hong Kong & Singapore in the 70s merged into 1.

Malaysian tea is unique and is different from Thai tea. The Malaysian version is much older and is the predecessor to the Thai and Hong Kong milk teas, as it was brought in by the British much earlier and localized much earlier. It is said that the Thai version originated from the South of Thailand, replicating the Malaysian version. The same can also be said about spicy food as the spiciest food in Southeast Asia originated from Indonesia and Malaysia way back before Thailand and others started them. Just info for you guys.

Yes, as a Thai I can agree about milk tea and spices. Indonesia and Malaysia were one nation under the old empires and were trading in spices before Thailand. Also yes, Thai milk tea originated from the Southern part of Thailand.

8:07 You are right! That scene used to be common and everywhere in the 70s or even early 80s. There used to be such a village right next to my block but now, they are all gone cos countries progressed and they made space for new developments. Pity, they do bring back lots of nostalgia even for me.

Great video from an awesome place. We went to a coffee shop in Georgetown that sold postcards that had a big material sheet on the wall with the 365 days of the year. So I bought postcards for all my kids and tried to get them sent in time for their birthdays that year. It sorta worked. That was 2017 maybe the shop is gone or changed. We caught the bus up to Batu Ferringhi one day and had a look around. We didn't use it but we found a beachside hotel that did day passes for their pool and sun loungers. At that time very inexpensive! Penang is awesome!

Hey Guys, Penang is actually on my bucket list although I live in Vietnam and just a stone’s throw away it’s not yết eventuated.. I’ll just watch your videos more to get inspired 😊.
You pictured floating villages on stilts in Southeast Asia? Did you mean just suspended villages on stilts or floating on the water?
One place I’m sure you would enjoy is located in Siem Reap Cambodia.. Chồng Kneas Floating Village.. You will take a long boat up this small waterway into one of the largest lake “Tonle Sap Lake” You will hire a tuk tuk to get there but it amazing in my opinion.. I went in the dry season so it gave me a different perspective of water volume to a wet season. At points in the long boat trip we had to get out and find deeper water and continue this several times… Tia maybe not like this part but who knows it’s an adventure.. you will see monkeys in the trees if you’re lucky.. this was just a suggestion for the future for you guys 😊

Char Kway Teow is so much better than Pad Thai. There are various regional differences, but it can be found across South East Asia. In the US you can find its cousin at Thai restaurants called "pad see ew" or "lard na" or "drunken noodles" with the ladder being more spicy than the other two.

Penang is one of my fave destinations, and you guys have done a great job of showing it.
At the 'postcard' point of your vid I thought to comment that you should try CKT, but I've seen now that you have - it's my must-eat dish when in George Town.
You might be all over this already, but for any curious viewers trawling the comments.. Kek Lok Si temple complex and Penang Hill are worth seeing, the colonial architecture and amazing street art can be seen everywhere but I love a stroll along Lorong Stewart, Roti & Dahl / Roti Cenai makes for a delicious breakfast (and unusual for us westerners), Red Garden Food Centre is great for a variety of local food in the one place.
Hot tip: generously tip your drinks waiters at RGFC so your bag containing passports, cash etc. will be securely waiting for you there when you suddenly realise you left it behind and frantically dash back! Ask me how I know ;)

Go to Batu Ferringhi's Night Market (it's huge) and eat at the hawker center there. The best! It's on the north end of the island and you can get there via Grab or bus. If you take the bus I recommend getting off early at the beginning of the market and eat at the hawker center. Then walk up the street and experience the night market and catch the bus back at the top of the night market. This way you will beat the crowds on the bus. Maybe it isn't that busy?

Many foreigners comment about the texture of durian flesh. Actually if you block all the other aspects, smell, look, color, appearance, flavor, size, etc and isolate only the texture, then you can actually equate it to avocado flesh, if you mash avocado and eat it with condensed milk or salt etc, or in its guacamole form. Exactly similar texture. Creamy.
Well, if something does not go well with your palate then it doesn't go well with your palate. But if the person does not like the texture of durian flesh, then I cannot recommend the place for a very
delicious avocado shake or avocado toast either 😬 Have fun with other food!

If you're still in Penang you should try to see more of the island. There's a bus, I think it's 101, that goes around to Telu Bahang on the west side, via all the beaches on the north side. I think from there it keeps going around the island, or maybe there's another bus that goes down the west side to Balik Pulau. You won't regret it. And it's cheap. --paul

4:17 the restaurant on the right of the screen is a famous nasi padang restaurant here in Georgetown. Usually crowded during lunch hour. And the food there is delicious. Should try the food there.
8:11 the southernmost clan jetty is yeoh jetty. It's the less visited jetty and there are no shops to sell anything to tourists there, just a jetty with a view. Not sure if you guys got there but it has the most scenic view with a temple on stilts next to it. Definitely not a touristy place.
11:52 come on guys, durian ice cream is the best.
16:16 I've eaten a lot of pad thai and char kuey teow. They're two different dishes and have nothing in common in terms of taste. The only thing similar is the noodle texture and both are flat rice noodles. So char kuey teow is not really similar to pad thai.
