Unrelated to parenting but 2 years ago almost to the day, my step dad went to have surgery to remove 2 tiny pea sized cancerous tumors from his kidney that were found completely accidentally.
Day after surgery we spoke with him over facetime, he ssid he was in pain but feeling alright. Of course this was during covid so he was alone.
The physiotherapist got him up to get moving with a walker, and he made it to the door before saying "i dont feel so good" and collapsing on the floor. Poor staff. He was 6'1 and 380lbs so they had to resuscitate on the floor. They got him to ICU but couldnt get him stabilized. He mept coding so they couldn't get a scan. Finally they did. Turns out an absolutely massive clot blocked off both pathways from his lungs to his heart, so he wasnt getting enough oxygen, for hours. A wonderful cardiothoracic surgeron came to do surgery and removed the clot. Everything went really well. Poor man went through 2 massive surgeries in 2 days.
Anyway, so they kept him intubated for a few days and then slowly started weaning him off of meds. He was off all of his meds but never woke up. My mom kept asking me (im an RN) could this kill him? And i always said yes. Absolutely it can. And theres a higher chance of it happening for many reasons. But i reassured her as well.
The night before... like HOURS before the hospital called with an update, i was bawling my eyes out. I just KNEW he wasnt going to make it. I cried to my fiance so hard. Im crying writing this. He tried to reassure me but i kept saying no, hes going to die. A couple hours later, his wonderful nurse called us and said "you need to come to the hospital, his blood pressure has spiked to 300/150. If you know anything about blood pressure, thats a death sentence. Not ALWAYS, but very likely. They said his brain stem was either trying to reboot or it was hemorraging. So my fiance and i rushed to get my mom to the hospital and he was on a staggering amount of medication. They were pumping him with fatal levels of medications just to keep him alive. It was awful. Uhm. A lot of hours passed, but they wanted to send him for an EEG to see if there was any brain activity. It was at the other hospital (i live in an area where theres 4 hospitals wothin 20-30 minutes like... a tight network. He was at the cardio hospital) but they determined he was too unstable so they brought someone with the EEG to the hospital and they determined there was no brain activity. None. Not even a blip.
The intensivist kept saying things like "he'll probably hang around for a few days and then pass so we'll call you when he does" and so i said (because my mom didnt know or have the guts to) "absolutely not. We're going to withdraw life support and hes going to pass with family around. It was during COVID and there were like 9 people in the room but everyone was going to go home and i was like nope im staying. So everyone except my mom, and my half sister (his daughter) and myself stayed. They removed life support. He hung around for 20 minutes or so while my mom and sister bawled and told them how much they loved him. I couldnt do as much or I'd break. I hung out with the nurse and watched the monitors. And eventually, very quickly, his heart rate began falling. The alarms were off and facing away so my family didnt realize. My mom left his side to come check just as the monitor hit 0 and she just collapsed in my arms. Writing this out i realize i hold a lot of trauma from that day. I was unfeeling. A rock. A nurse. And i had to be that for my whole family. My younger sister (not his daughter) who i havent seen cry since she was a little kid was laying on him and wailing like id never heard her. I had to stabilize her with my knee.
Anyway, later they determined that he had a hole in his heart that was letting pieces of the clot into his blood vessels leading to his pbrain and he suffered multiple TIAs, or mini strokes, which is why he never woke up. He was 47.
My point to this very long, depressing story is that life is so messed up. You never think things will happen to you until suddenly they DO. We were making jokes and laughing even though he was in critical condition because his death was just not an option. I knew it was a possibility but imagining my mom trying to sustain herself on one income, after losing the only man she loved and she loved for 19 years devastated me. It still does. Especially my sister losing her dad.
My dad is a dead beat sperm donor. I wouldnt even blink if he passed. My step dad wasnt anywhere near perfect and was a very depressed man in denial of his depression, but he was the only true father i ever knew. It was a hard loss.
I dont even know if i should post this, but you are just SUPER MOM. I cant imagine trying to celebrate a birth when i lost my best friend just days before. And remembering all of those medications is hard even for a nurse who does it daily. Its a LOT. But im glad hes alive. Hes the cutest and sweetest looking little boy ever. I hope Maxley lives a long and happy life 🤍🤍🤍
