The NFL schedule is predetermined EVERY year. It's literally set every year - on into infinity. You play 6 games against your division. You rotate playing a different inter-conference division each year. You also rotate playing a different out of conference division each year. You then play one team from each of the other two inter-conference divisions - which will be matched up by your placing in your divisions the season prior. Now, with the added 17th game. You rotate through out of conference divisions. Playing a game with a team from that division - matched up by your placing in each of your divisions the year prior.

St Brown at the top of the screen (right side) is on the line and covering the left tackle (Skipper), you count him and the lineman on the line, and it's 7 (Decker is on the line on the left side), the receiver to Decker's left is off the line, along with the tight end/slot receiver between Skipper and St Brown, then Goff and our runningback... 7 on the line, and 4 in the backfield. Legal formation... only reason they are saying illegal formation is if Skipper was really the one that checked in as eligible, because he reported as eligible but was covered up by St Brown

    • @derrbow

Uhh there’s supposed to be exactly 7 men on the line of scrimmage every play. The 5 lineman plus 2 other players, whether they be TE, WR, or any other position like RB or QB, just has to be 7 total guys on the line. The formation is what screwed the Lions. Even if you report as eligible you have to line up correctly. There was a WR outside of 68 and one one the other end of the line. This caused 68 to be ineligible. The Lions needed another lineman on the inside of 68 or the WR to be in the backfield. The Lions screwed themselves and then Campbell had two chances after that. Since the first one wasn't executed correctly they should have played for overtime. This is what happens when you get locked on stupid.

@@alanhobbs7360 The people saying he was ineligible 'because he wasn't covered' are wrong (covered, in this case, means that there is a teammate on the line of scrimmage outside of him. It has nothing to do with the defense.) So many people misunderstand eligibility. Covering him would make him ineligible, not eligible. (Also, ignore the OP -- what he said about formation was all wrong. The WR outside of 68 *was* in the backfield. This is why #68 was considered 'uncovered', which makes him eligible if he reports as such.)
The formation was 100% legal and he was 'uncovered', as he ought to be; all that happened was the ref was confused - for some unknown reason - about who was reporting as eligible. That's all. Everyone is making far too much of it and adding a lot more confusion to an already misunderstood rule. The announcers didn't help, either, but they were confused 'in the moment' so it's somewhat forgivable.

Why is everyone talking about "Detroit getting screwed?" Why is no one talking about ------> Officials missed tripping call before Lions' controversial penalty
    ByADAM SCHEFTER
    December 31, 2023, 11:09 AM
A missed call late in Saturday night's game between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys led to an even higher-profile error in what has escalated into the latest and most egregious example that the NFL has an officiating issue.
The latest controversy surrounding referee Brad Allen and his officiating crew -- involving an overturned 2-point conversion by the Lions -- may have been avoided if not for another missed call on the Cowboys' previous possession.
Allen's officiating crew is expected to be downgraded, which will influence whether those officials are chosen for the postseason.
The Cowboys owned a 17-13 lead when they intercepted Jared Goff at the Lions' 29-yard line with 2:05 remaining. Tony Pollard's 7-yard run on the ensuing play was called back after Dallas tight end Peyton Hendershot was called for tripping, and the Cowboys faced a first-and-25 on the Lions' 44.
Video of that initial first-down play, reviewed by ESPN, showed that Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson -- not Hendershot -- should have been the one flagged for attempting to trip Pollard. The NFL has not commented on the tripping call mistake as of Sunday morning.
A penalty against the Lions on that play would have set up the Cowboys with a first down after the two-minute warning and a chance to run more of the clock while forcing the Lions to use their remaining timeouts.

@@cdngravy844 it's more unfair to let the play stand for 15 seconds and then throw the flag. It's a trick play. The whole point is that 58 and 70 are there as a distraction. Dan Campbell specifically went over that play with the refs before the game and got the ok from them. Then they change their minds because it would cost Dallas the game.

Unfortunate call, ref looked 68 in the face as well as the two other linemen around him. Refs should let the players just play effing football, but you reap what you sow Detroit, you ended up tricking the ref. Alas the lions wouldn't even be in that position if Dallas didn't literally throw the game away in your favor the drive earlier.

Just ditch the whole tackle-eligible silliness altogether. It's not necessary. It's weird. It's gimmicky and stupid. No one's offense relies on it and it's mostly just used to trick the defense into leaving someone uncovered rather than actually outplaying them. Just make it the rule that tackles are never eligible, no matter what. The rules are complex enough and tackle-eligible is such a dumb, unneeded monkey wrench.

  • @calabreese

no dog in this fight. how is this controversial? The rule states that only ONE team member (jersey number 50-79) can be declared eligible in any given play. The refs HAVE to advise the defense so campbell or any coach can't pull a fast one. Campbell and/or his team members don't know the rules? or 70 ran in pretending that he wanted to be eligible while 68 whispered into the refs ear....again, the ref HAS to advise the defense which team member has been declared eligible. The NFL is now making sure teams are clear on this tackle eligible rule. Don't get me wrong there has been some pretty poor officiating this year and refs have been brutal for years. Watch one of the worst non calls ever that kept the saints out of the superbowl a few years ago. Officiating stinks. But don't throw them under the bus for this one. bad coaching is to blame. and consider if 68 were eligible maybe Dallas would have been smart enough to prevent the 2 point conversion? Live and learn. move on. they messed up. and Det could have kicked extra point providing an opportunity to win in OT but Campbell wanted to be the hero and go for the win.

A lot of people here don't realize that in no situation could they have counted the 2 ppint conversion. The refs announced before the play that 70 reported. So rather they reported wrong or the Lions did. You can not penalize the Cowboys because they were told that number 70 reported so automatically nobody would even consider covering 68 because it was never announced by the official thatbhe was eligible before the play. So either you blame the refs or the lions but no way can you say the Lions should have won because the Cowboys were never told that 68 reported. Also, lets not act like the Lions didnt get gifted a call right before this

  • @leomdk939

By having #58, 68 and 70 all go to the ref, the Lions were obviously trying to confuse Dallas as to who was going to be eligible. This is bad sportsmanship because the rule about reporting as eligible is designed specifically to prevent this confusion. They aren't supposed to get that advantage. I'm glad it backfired on them. Sportsmanship should still matter.

In the heat of the moment, it's easy to miss the refs telling you which combination of ineligible numbers is now eligible (as in: "Hey, did the ref say 68 and 70? Or did he say 58 and 70?)" . Detroit was trying to pull a fast one. Why do you think they sent 3 guys to talk to the refs when only 2 will be eligible? Why do you think both68 and 58 were there, when 58 wasn't reporting? Then they're wondering why the refs got confused, too? Serves em right. They got too deceptive for their own good.
