  • The thermal fuse on any dryer is meant to do one job, to protect the dryer from catching on fire and prevent it from further damage. There are a few common reasons for the thermal fuse to fail:
    1. The blocked exhaust duct. Without the airflow, the amount of heat is larger than the amount of the air exiting the dryer. The heat will backfire and short the thermal fuse. Not necessarily the exhaust get blocked with the lint, sometimes when the dryer is pushed back too much, the exhaust duct gets kinked, or the outside part of the exhaust duct is blocked by birds nesting.
    2. The cycling thermostat is not reading the temperature correctly and does not disconnect the current going to the heating element. Result, the heating element will work longer than it should, and the thermal fuse will get shorted.
    3. Electric shortage inside the dryer sometimes causes the thermal fuse to short. Only a professional technician can find the exact electric chain shortage and fix the issue.
These are the most common reasons when thermal fuses shorts. But I found another reason which is an indirect effect on a thermal fuse. Only in electric dryers when the heating element has contact with the ground. The heating element has a 120V available all the time via L1, and it gets activated with the supply of another 120V via L2. The heating element works when it receives 240V. Ground is also available in all the time and having contact to L1, the heating element gets activated. The thermal fuse or a cut-off thermostat will get shorted in order to protect the dryer from a further damage. This is not a common failure with the heating element and might not be exactly the video you are looking for but it definitely will help someone having the same issue and wondering why his thermal fuse keeps shorting.
