This was the first nice pencil I ever bought (.5mm). I really like the looks and comfort factor-- I spend hours writing on a semi-daily basis. The only problem I've had is that it occasionally has feeding issues from one lead stick to the next if I've put too many spares in. After it happened twice, I realized what the issue was-- now I just make it a point not to put in every stick that will go when I refill it. Just ordered a 7 since I get a fair amount of lead breakage whenever I get too involved with the novel I'm currently writing (I prefer pencil and paper with initial drafts).
My favorite mechanical pencil! When she says it's the best pencil ever I don't think she is exaggerating, this pencil really is that amazing. It isn't as beautiful as the Rotring 800, or any of the other more expensive pencils out there, but that is OK because mechanical pencils are tools and not ornaments. The Graphgear 1000 retracts the guide pipe to protect it. It allows you change the lead type indicator and the thing doesn't move on its own like it happens to so many other pencils. The clip curves inwards towards the pencil to avoid giving you a nasty feeling as you turn the pencil while you are drafting. The Knurled grip has rubber dots to make it easier for people like me who have sensitive hands. The design is made so that both people with large hands and small hands can use it with ease. The Pencil is incredibly well made and very durable. And like if all of those points aren't enough, it's actually VERY affordable, in fact, it sells in the US for under $20 ($17 to be precise), so you can equip yourself with a good selection of them with different lead grades and sizes to cover all bases without spending a fortune. This pencil really is perfect!!!!!!
I did notice it was a lot taller than the 500 or 800 so yeah I do agree that it is the best for DRAFTING but I noticed like if you need to write down notes in a notebook for a class the wight is consentrated in the middle that makes it slower to write down notes , that’s why I personally use the p2o7 to jot down notes for school but the 1000 is the best
But for bigger hands the bumps CAN be rather slippery though, as you're only gripping onto shallow, smooth, silicone bumps since there isn't much space of knurled metal between the bumps for the grip to work well.
The rotring 600 isn't ornament. Wtf are you talking about? Graphgear 1000 is not even close to being the best pencil ever made. Pentel itself has various pencils that are better, Smash, Graph 1000, and ofc vintage models that are discounted like the Pentel five, that are way better than anything made today
To clarify guys, we don't compare the Graphgear 1000 with the Rotring 600. The reason being because the Rotring 600 is a fixed sleeve drafting pencil which is a different type of drafting pencil. The pencil we compare the Pentel Graphgear 1000 to is the Rotring 800. I own both pencils and I have to say there's pros and cons to both. The Rotring 800 being a Rotring feels more precise benefitting from that German engineering (although it's made in Japan), and it's also a more elegant pencil, but it's sadly way more expensive and only comes in .5mm and .7mm, while the Graphgear 1000 comes in .3mm, .5mm, .7mm, and 9mm and it's way sturdier than the Rotring 800. The Graphgear has all the advantages I mentioned in my original comment so it is my conclusion that it is a better overall pencil although I regard the Rotring as a sexier pencil. I hope this helped :)
You should try the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette, it rotates the lead to keep it sharp. Another good one is the Zebra DelGaurd, it keeps the lead from breaking.
@Sias Finny IMO they're for different purposes. The Kuru Toga is amazing if you write a lot, but I wouldn't get it for drawing/sketching, it works well enough, and is good at details, but isn't designed for it. It's a writers pencil, or an architect, engineer. Basically, its best use case is for shorter precise strokes, rather than long ones.
@Sias Finny honestly im not a big artist, so im not really in the position to recommend a drawing specific pencil, but this one seems pretty good, i ordered it off amazon the other day so we'll see
I got a 4 pack of these just now for about $60 from Amazon. I'm sure I could draw things almost as good wood pecils but it's just nice to have quality. The subtle difference in quality is huge in the eye of an artist, it makes thing way more fun.
These are really great. They were my fave for years before I tried the Rotring rapid pro and zebra tect 2 way 1000. These guys ones have a heavier but comfortable weight in hand.
Nice review! Although I'm not a fan of the GG 1000 (grip and weight bother me), it's always a pleasure to see an enthusiast geeking out over something they enjoy! :D
Well really the rotational thing doesn’t change the pencil it’s more of a label so you remember what lead you have in it... if you want different types of lead you have to buy them you can’t just rotate the pencil and it changes
I have the 0.7mm for cartooning. It is amazing. I like the raised rubber grips for comfort and control. The weight is perfect. Overall this is a great pencil. That was my review but this was an excellent review, too! Good job! 😀
Hello guys I bought one today ABSULUTELY LOVED IT I own the rotring 600 which I thought was the best until This I love it very smooth durable comftarable I ADORE I promise if you buy it you will LOVE IT
PlaceboTree They both work so far as being a mechanical pencil. It depends on which size lead you use because that may affect the price. Amazon prices fluctuate on the Graph Gear pencils. Personally, I think that the aesthetic and the physical interaction with the Graph Gear is superior. My dad does use some pencils very similar to the Alvin Draftmatic and doesn't mind it. It really comes down to how much you want to pay and which one is more appealing. The Draftmatic also doesn't have the function to retract the lead/holder. And I personally found that clip on the Draftmatic tends to catch on my hair or loose threads. Hope this helps!
+Gabriel Johnson It does leave a residue but that can easily be removed. A product like Goo Gone followed by either rubbing alcohol or Windex should work.
Think about it? If the only pencil that can really rival the Graph gear is the Rotring? Then how awesome is this pencil at $20-25 cheaper then Rotring? The Graph Gear 1000 I can get on Amazon for $9-11 and the Rotring at $25-30. Yes the Rotring is better imo then the Graph gear. The Rotring is all metal inside and out. And the Graph gear is mostly metal with some plastic innards. But that's it! Both draw awesomely! (That's what I use them for.) Both are quality made, and feel awesome in your hands. The if you want more quality in materials used? Get Rotring. If not? Graph Gear is what you want! Uni mechanical pencils are nice too, but the Graph Gear 1000 and the Rotring is the cream of the crop. I prefer them over Faber Castell, Steadtler, Caran D'ache and Uni. These are just my opinions. Everyone's going to have their favorites.😄
Hi "Frigg and Freya". Thanks for your video, it's pretty cool to get a review of this Mechanical Pencil. I got a question : What's the difference between .9, .5, .3 mm ? .9 is for technical drawing, etc. ? I'm working in animation and I'm drawing everyday, so ... What's the best ? Thanks !
A HONG It is really just a difference in lead size. So for what you are doing you need to figure out how thick you want the lines to be. And of course if you go over it a few times you can make the lines thicker. I like the .7/.9 for the most part but for details you may want to use thinner. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
I own one [rotary model, not the standard], it's really good but don't get it for drawing, get it for writing, geometric drawings/designs/ architecture, etc. Edit: It works well enough for drawing, but that shouldn't be its main use case
Thank you for the video. Am planning to buy both 0.9 and 0.7 mm pencil, so that I want to use this on a dialy basis. My worry is that the leads are a bit highly priced. and i "dont like" to us 0.5mm since, the writing comes out very thin when compared to thick ones which i like when am writing with it. so that question is 1. Can i buy Staedtler Mars or Camlin 0.7mm or 0.9mm lead for Graph Gear 1000? will there be any different in writing? 2. How does HB,B etc setting work? Do i need to buy different variations of pencil leads? Can you please explain?
forkdbloke Hey! Thanks for watching. For the lead pricing, you can find a variety of different types of lead online that are much more reasonable than in some stores if you are not in an area that normally stocks the leads. You would probably need to buy in bulk, but it is lead and you will most likely use it all up anyways. These pencils should be able to use a variety of different leads so long as it is the correct size lead for the pencil (e.g. 0.7mm lead for the 0.7mm pencil). The only way I would see that not working is if the lead made by a different company was held to different standards. I have not tried this yet, but theoretically there would be no problem. The only difference in writing would be any attributes that are particular to that lead. I have not tried to compare the different leads but should one be manufactured to be a more smooth lead than it will write more smoothly. (hm... this is starting to sound like a good idea for a new comparison and testing video) The different settings on the pencil is an analogue way of indicating which type of lead you put in. Say you want to use HB, B, and H 0.7mm leads for your projects. You would get three of the 0.7mm pencil and then rotate the barrel to show the HB, B, or H matching the lead you put into that pencil. That way you can work on your project and just look at the pencil to see which lead it contained. Hope that helps!
Frigg And Freya Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. As you already know by the way i have had these doubts, you cannot rule out to think that i have very little idea about pencils/leads and their usages. Yes.. it would be better to provide a comparison video. Here, in INDIA, currently, i have only these options here www.amazon.in/gp/search/ref=sr_qz_back?sf=qz&rh=i%3Aoffice-products%2Cn%3A2454172031%2Ck%3Amechanical+pencil&keywords=mechanical+pencil&ie=UTF8&qid=1439125627 Please suggest
Oh wow. I have never been on the Amazon site for India. Ok so I did find some Pentel lead on there and it looks like the typical lead I have used: www.amazon.in/Pentel-Super-Hi-Polymer-Lead-Refills/dp/B001B0D9QK/ref=sr_1_6?s=office&ie=UTF8&qid=1439141101&sr=1-6&keywords=pentel+lead I also found a site that will explain the hardness of the lead according to the scale that uses the H, HB, B abbriviations. Mechanical pencil lead usually doesn't go beyond the 2H or 2B and HB is a fairly common lead hardness as it is both hard and also has a nice blackness to it. pencils.com/hb-graphite-grading-scale/ Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Frigg And Freya Thank you. but these are 0.5 mm but, i was planning to buy 0.7mm and the lead prices are a bit high. Need tgo check on other brads as well, i shall do that revert when i have more questions. Anyway, am glad that you are responding to my questions!
Of course! And I am sorry, I meant to put this link in: www.amazon.in/Pentel-Super-Hi-Polymer-Lead-Refill/dp/B0016P2A5G/ref=sr_1_4?s=office&ie=UTF8&qid=1439147522&sr=1-4&keywords=pentel+lead I don't know what the conversion rate is so I have no true idea as to how much this costs. I also saw 0.9mm on there as well.
Thanks for the video. I bought four of these, a 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 for my nephew's graduation present. Along with two Parker Jotters and all the ink, lead and erasers he's likely to need for a couple years or more. He wants to go to engineering school so I thought that it would be appropriate for him to have some decent writing instruments to begin his scholastic efforts with.
I think you should get the graph gear 1000 and it will last you FOREVER (if you don't get it stolen)! it has a retractable tip and overall it's a good pencil. But I would also recommend the 500 because it's balance point is right at the grip so it feels lighter.
+PlaceboTree I know you sent this out 6 months ago but if your possibaly still looking I recommend the pentel ive hear the draft matic has bad friction oh the grip
This is really great, I'm thinking to buy one because I saw that pencils in nearby store. By the way, I love Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil. It's really great and you should give it a try too :)
Will it last long? I mean, talking about the retraction. Will it last long like couple of years or it would break soon? Pls let me know, as i am gonna buy this one so kindly help. Thanks
Mine don't work at all, worked for a day, then it just wasn't able to hold any lead, of any type, the lead just slid through the pencil, which sucks cause I other wise liked it, until it stopped working. I even disassembled it to try and fix it
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the difference between a drafting pencil luke this and a regular mechanical one? I mean, what is the purpose of it?
almaperro Drafting mechanical pencils are built better (like, metal and stuff) and have a thin tip for tracing with rulers and templates, stuff like that
Thanks Brian, I went to staples about 2 hours ago because I wanted this pencil but they didn't have it in stock, they had the 500 only. I only use pencils for puzzles once in a while but I just like this one a lot and I want it.
almaperro Yeah, they're pretty damn cool. I was wanting a Staedtler Regulator pencil, but they cost sooo much. I think I'll get either this, or the Rotring 600
almaperro They are usually a metal holder for the lead. This prevents the metal rulers (usually used in drafting or fine art) from digging into the plastic holder on inexpensive mechanical pencils. Then the actual barrel of the pencil is sometimes made of metal too and other upgrades are made to make use of it just more enjoyable. There are plastic mechanical pencils that have a metal holder for the lead (not sure the exact name for that little piece). The PaperMate clear point comes in 0.7 lead and has the metal holder. This was by far my favorite mechanical pencil in all of high school and beginning of college even for normal writing (I misspell words a lot and prefer to erase rather than use white out). Hope this helps!
If this is Mechanical pencil wath is " Uni Kuru Toga" ? why they dont make 1.0 lead? i am dispointed about that because on arquitecture the precicion its the perfection.
Well if you want precision you should be going smaller not bigger. I personally like .3mm and .5mm lead. If you do want lead bigger than .9mm for architecture use then buy a Lead holder. Lead holders aren't mechanical pencils, they grasp lead which you have to replace over time. I know staedtler is a great brand.
only problem I have with these is the cheap plastic inside of the pencil. I had the .7 lead size. so in this case the plastic was blue. The tip broke off in less than two months of use.
Some, including me, might argue that the Pentel Smash is the best mechanical pencil, but again, it depends by what do you want from a mechanical pencil and what do you want to do with it.
Good pencil but the metal body is quite slippery and the weight distribution is not ideal either - in my opinion it should have been one inch closer to the tip. The Graphgear 500 is a better pencil, but unfortunately it lacks a retracting mechanism.
Hi There!, Can anyone tell me if you recomend this Mechanical Pencil for only writing? Cuz i really want to buy the 4 special edition on Amazon. But i am only using them for writing. That's why i am asking. Thanks for your attention, keep rolling over comentaries
+Zach Mattiola I looked up both of your questions to be sure I was giving the correct information. Part of the reason why graphite for writing instruments is called lead relates to the fact that when they first discovered quality graphite that could be used for writing it was believed to be lead. Secondly, there were also writing instruments made from lead that were used for writing without ink. So far as H, HB, and B, these are indications to the quality characteristic of the lead (graphite). H is for hard leads and B for black lead which means it is softer. The higher the H (2H, 4H, etc.) the harder the lead. The same goes for B as well where 2B is softer than B. HB is the middle point where it is both hard and soft enough to write fairly black. Here is where I pulled the more specific information from: www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/11/why-pencil-lead-is-called-lead/
Interesting answer, those leads you were using seemed very grey, can you get darker leads or am I just imagining a normal HB pencil to have a darker lead or is it all the same but simply the pressure or force on the lead that makes it appear darker or lighter?
I bought these I paid like 15$ for each at blick art store. BEST INVESTMENT EVER. I loves these pencils so much I recommend these to all my friend. Worth the price.
I love my .3mm one, may get a .5mm also, I use for drawing
This was the first nice pencil I ever bought (.5mm). I really like the looks and comfort factor-- I spend hours writing on a semi-daily basis. The only problem I've had is that it occasionally has feeding issues from one lead stick to the next if I've put too many spares in. After it happened twice, I realized what the issue was-- now I just make it a point not to put in every stick that will go when I refill it. Just ordered a 7 since I get a fair amount of lead breakage whenever I get too involved with the novel I'm currently writing (I prefer pencil and paper with initial drafts).
I have the 800 for about a year and I still look at it as if I just got it it's amazingly smooth all metal and retractable
I had it... and I jammed it. :')

I saw these on Amazon, for 9 bucks each. I saw your review and was sold. I'll be honest these things are fantastic.
I have been using the 0.7 once for 3 years... By far my FAVORITE lead pencil!
Toaster Boy, you are so responsible
You should try the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette, it rotates the lead to keep it sharp. Another good one is the Zebra DelGaurd, it keeps the lead from breaking.
The thing is, with the led that comes with this, it is hi-polymer so there is no need to sharpen them.

I also found a site that will explain the hardness of the lead according to the scale that uses the H, HB, B abbriviations. Mechanical pencil lead usually doesn't go beyond the 2H or 2B and HB is a fairly common lead hardness as it is both hard and also has a nice blackness to it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Frigg And Freya Thank you. but these are 0.5 mm but, i was planning to buy 0.7mm and the lead prices are a bit high. Need tgo check on other brads as well, i shall do that revert when i have more questions. Anyway, am glad that you are responding to my questions!
Of course! And I am sorry, I meant to put this link in: www.amazon.in/Pentel-Super-Hi-Polymer-Lead-Refill/dp/B0016P2A5G/ref=sr_1_4?s=office&ie=UTF8&qid=1439147522&sr=1-4&keywords=pentel+lead
I don't know what the conversion rate is so I have no true idea as to how much this costs. I also saw 0.9mm on there as well.
I have this in 0.5 mm, but what about the Rotring 600 or 800?
Thanks for the video. I bought four of these, a 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 for my nephew's graduation present. Along with two Parker Jotters and all the ink, lead and erasers he's likely to need for a couple years or more. He wants to go to engineering school so I thought that it would be appropriate for him to have some decent writing instruments to begin his scholastic efforts with.
Hi nice video, for make ecuations which us better. 5 or. 7?
YOU EVER TRY THE BLACKWING 602
I have a vice and that is a pencil. Thanks for this great video
I'm thinking about getting one but I'm also looking at the Alvin Draftmatic. What do you think?
I have one of these nut then I lost the cap but it's still functional for me. Rip me but good job overall on the video.
I never understood why some videos are muted.
What do think about Mont Blanc mechanical pencil , Would you prefer it or its just overpriced ?
+Kaptain America I have never used one so I don't know.
THERES .3 LEAD?!? I NEED
there is also 0.2 size available in some .. you can check pentel orenz 0.2
@@ummrawamus heyyy
I'm getting that pencil for my birthday
On Amazon right now for $4 each. Bought two haha
Just curious are the grips interchangeable
Will it last long? I mean, talking about the retraction. Will it last long like couple of years or it would break soon?
Pls let me know, as i am gonna buy this one so kindly help. Thanks
It lasts very long
I use it to draw and I like it as a drawing pencil
Mine don't work at all, worked for a day, then it just wasn't able to hold any lead, of any type, the lead just slid through the pencil, which sucks cause I other wise liked it, until it stopped working. I even disassembled it to try and fix it
Nick Papadakis wrong size lead?
Riasat Audhy nope, just state up died
your sure you used the right size? That's exactly what happens with a size too small.
which is better rotring 600 or The graphgear 1000
I haven't tried the Rotring 600 yet. I plan to in the future though. Anyone else here try both?
ok thx :0 just bought the pentel graphgear 1000 :)
+Gabriel Johnson awesome!! Let me know what you think of it. :)
got it!
Yes, it was helpful. Thank you frigg
They should make a 0.7 lead but those are great i can definitely compare this to the rotring 800+ and blackwing 602
Dj Litt They do make lead in that size. Thanks for watching!
Best Pencil Ever I use The .9 its a beast
only problem I have with these is the cheap plastic inside of the pencil. I had the .7 lead size. so in this case the plastic was blue. The tip broke off in less than two months of use.
Amazon…i just got the 9mm two days ago…and recently 5mm..and 7mm,,…neato! i use for math
Were do u get them
0.7 or 0.5 im debating which one i should buy. any input is much appreciated.
Markism07 i think it's personal... Some people prefer to write with bigger lines, i personally prefer lighter lines (so I'll go for a .5)...
Some, including me, might argue that the Pentel Smash is the best mechanical pencil, but again, it depends by what do you want from a mechanical pencil and what do you want to do with it.
I found a three piece set and its for 35 dollars on amazon
If you have a blue mechanical pencil can I get it
Great review!
Sold!
Good pencil but the metal body is quite slippery and the weight distribution is not ideal either - in my opinion it should have been one inch closer to the tip. The Graphgear 500 is a better pencil, but unfortunately it lacks a retracting mechanism.
What are the different settings for?
Braydon Givan it is so you can label the type of lead you put into your pencil (different hardness/softness). Thanks for watching!
Nice
Can I buy one from you in this was uploaded one year ago
Cayro Espinoza buy on amazon they are like 9 bucks
o
This is the best pentel machanical pencil ever!!
Where is the eraser?
Hi There!, Can anyone tell me if you recomend this Mechanical Pencil for only writing? Cuz i really want to buy the 4 special edition on Amazon. But i am only using them for writing. That's why i am asking. Thanks for your attention, keep rolling over comentaries
I LOVE GRAPHGEAR!!!!!
I️ bought one in 7th grade and I️ am in 11th grade with the the same pencil
How much ??
Frigg and freya can you do a comparison on graphgear 500 and graphgear 1000 pls i dont know which to buy.
What does hb b and all that mean?
Here is where I pulled the more specific information from:
www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/11/why-pencil-lead-is-called-lead/
+Frigg And Freya There is F, which is considered the "true medium" in table drafting.
Interesting answer, those leads you were using seemed very grey, can you get darker leads or am I just imagining a normal HB pencil to have a darker lead or is it all the same but simply the pressure or force on the lead that makes it appear darker or lighter?
im undecided on this pencil. it looks ok.... except for the fugly clip.
Most people think 10 $'s for a pencil is a waste... I'd pay 100$ for these
I feel like a writing ninja/wizard while using it. I write and I think "omg omg omg"
