I like both pencils. The thing I noticed is the metal used on the 500 is not stainless and after using it for a while, the metal grip gives out a strong odor. The grip for the 1000 is stainless. The 1000 is more of a premium writing pencil, kind of like an accessory. The 500 is more like a good quality basic mechanical pencil.

The 500 uses a plated brass grip. I've had mine for ages and it is turning yellow/gold.

@@jasonblack2477 The 500 by far: better balance and grip. The 1000 feels and looks ugly. Its balance is towards the clicker, the grip is horrible with those ovals and the aluminum feel is ugh. Also, the 1000 has a clip that protrudes too much with a potential to break, rendering the pencil unusable. The 500 feels sturdier and better overall.

@@jasonblack2477 The Graphgear 500 is also performing better, because it has a stable tip with zero wobble, precision is and will always be better in comparison. The balance also provides better performance, IT will also last at least one or 2 decades more, than the 1000. Those break after a year of use, if you're lucky, the 1000 will last 2 years before it breaks. Totally agree with others, who said the 500 is better. WAY better, Actually it's the best pencils you can get, mostly for free or technical drawing, but because of it's performance, it also makes the most beautiful letters, it provides more beautiful handwriting!! Comes with the best eraser you can get on a mechanical pencil too.. I could say more, it's that good!!

Because the clip retraction mechanism failed in some Pentel 1000s, the manufacturer changed the pivot design, one or two years ago. A different 500 is sold in Europe. I have the 0.3 mm lead model. All lead sizes have a silver plastic barrel, and the push button has '0.3' on it, on a brown background, the ISO colour code. The cap of the 500 has a rotating lead hardness indicator on it, so fewer differences between the 500 and 1000. Muji sell the 0.5 mm 500, with a white barrel and a lead hardness indicator, so a cheap way to get this feature in the US. It is their 'low centre of gravity' pencil.

I've had the 500 model for a few years, including two of engineering school. No complaints other than that the 500 uses a plated brass grip that will eventually turn yellow. The 500's grip threads onto plastic instead of brass, although I haven't had any problems with that.

For me it's the balance. I like the 1000 very much, except that the weight of the upper body (metal) tries to tilt the pencil when I draw. The mostly-plastic 500's centre of gravity is closer to where you grip it.

imo both the 800 and 1000 are failed attempts at a premium 500. The gel tumors in the grip feel awful, the extending pipe eventually develops wobbling, they're just too heavy and the extra cm in length doesn't help. Also, while I'm careful enough with my stuff not to have had either problem yet, I feel the spring mechanism in the 1000's clip is a frailer failure point than the permanently exposed pipe in the 500.
I really wish they'd just make the 500 with a light metal body instead.

I don't think you folks in the USA realize what a priveleged consumer market you're in. Up here in Canada (I'm 90 minutes north of Vermont) we pay literally twice as much for these pencils. I nearly choked when he said $5 and $10 for the respective models! I guess it's cuz everything _we_ get first goes _thru_ the States, and then our importers tack on customs expenses, duties & taxes, _and_ their cut - not much comes directly to Canada.

Paying more is just the way it is up here. But other countries have it worse than us - the UK, Scandinavia, or worst of all, Australia/New Zealand! Prices _and_ taxes. The USA is the lucky anomaly, with just about the cheapest consumer prices in the world, and some of the lowest taxes t'boot.

Ooooooh. I getcha now. Your lead sleeve may be bent to one side just enough to cause a pressure hotspot on the lead, enough for it to break with a tiny bit of force. Usually it happens when the mechpen is dropped or knocked against something hard, whether by you or before purchase. Since the GG's lead sleeve is constantly exposed, it's super vulnerable to this.

The 1000 clip is a fantastic feature for pocket carry. Best clip that exists for that purpose. Clip falls off the 500.

the matt finish on the 1k pisses me off, something feels non premium about it they should've went with full Stainless or brass but not paint it in such color

Yea they could do a lot to improve on this pencil. I’d love to see a special edition or mirror finish etc

Comprei a GraphGear 500 por 47 reais. Vale o preço, vai ficar de herança pros meus netos, mas mesmo assim... 💸

the 1000 isn't all metal; the body and tip are plastic

Tip for P.G 500, dont overstuff them with lead or else the very tip of the metal gets clogged
mine got clogged out of no reason cause my brittle hb lead broke whilst inside the bottom of the tip.
Not only that, the tip is one long part so its quite difficult to remove
