Never played this game before but I could sense in his team they knew what was gone happen a you dont step up to the plate with what people call a terrible character unless your winning or dumb and I don’t think dumb people get this far
Utmost respect for sticking with a character no matter how low he is on the tier list. That's the beauty of Third Strike. Anything can happen because of parries
it's funny because the instant I saw yun's oki on alex, my brain instantly went "oh he's gonna wake up super isn't he". It's scrubby until it works baby!
A lot of times Low tier characters are some of the most dangerous characters to fight…they will always be unknown to the audience who are not aware of the capabilities that character has. Not only that…if a character is low tier…even the most experienced players can fall victim to someone who mains a low tier character
It's so sad that the overrated Juri has a perfect attendance record since her debut, but the coolest grappler in the series is treated like a side character now...
Same thing with Necro. A zoner without a fireball isn't something you see every day to the point that I can only name 2, Necro and Axl (pre Strive new move).
I love your videos man, you've told me so many fighting game stories I would have never heard otherwise, and nobody does it like you. You have a chill vibe, you're a good storyteller, and I'm happy to watch every video you release :D
Funny irony is the picture used in the thumbnail was when he was considered a high tier character. Iirc in both versions of TVC Alex was on the too tier or the very close to being top tier.
One thing I've noticed is how grapplers have never been high tier characters consistently, despite their high damage unblockable moves requiring 360s. Probably because the game developers go 'hey, you know this game's main combo mechanic? Well the grapplers won't use it at all, because that might make them too powerful'.
I was just thinking yesterday that if Alex had a parry V-Skill in SFV that he’d be a lot better. DDT could have been half circle motion again and his Grab Command Normal should’ve returned. Would be a bonus if his regular taunt still gave him 2 consecutive specials… I like Alex despite not normally playing grapplers or charge characters-but for some reason he feels both ‘fair’ and ‘incomplete’ to me...
Me too. I'm an Alex main in SFV. But he got nerfed hard after Season 2 and didn't really get viable until literally in the final patch. Alex really needs his parries to be outside of V-Trigger to be viable, and I'd much rather Flying DDT be reworked into a ranged blockable throw that can hit crouching opponents..
The good thing about playing a character with more limitations, you will see people use Alex in different ways to win. The thing is when you watch say, chun-li players in third strike, they all have similar boring playstyles.
What people fail to realize is that tier lists are opinion pieces not gospel. Not everyone values the same things. Some people value speed some value strength. So the relative strength of a character, weapon or anything in a game is based on what the user values. People have this bad habit of taking the easy way out. That's why tier lists are created and used. People want a quick guide to tell them what match ups are going to be like. The problem is tier lists create assumptions. Those assumptions and preconceived notions can cost you dearly. Especially against an opponent that has put more time into their craft. Many a pro has choked on a low tier counter pick simply because the matchup is unknown. Mad respect for anyone that can put in the time to get good with a character others have deemed useless. Thats true skill and hard work paying off.
man I started playing 3rd strike some months ago with alex and I choose alex don't caring of the fact that he is like top 5 trash, I've been wondering if you would drop a video on how genki made alex work and you did it, thx
Genki and Kazuya are both my favourite JP 3rd players, especially Kazuya they're inspirational Alex players and seeing what they manage to do with the character is nothing short of inspirational
as a ALEX main since 3rd strike i salute this man, SFV near the end also gave me hope cause Alex was pretty decent compared to what he was since SF3, but hopefully capcom bring him back and mika before SF6 ends
IMO bottom tier doesn’t always mean “bad character” to me it could also mean “character that is incredibly hard to use whose potential is only unlocked after lots and lots of practice and effective application of their theoretical strengths” but sometimes it could just mean “bad character” lol
alex is not a terrible character. matter of fact; i forgot how good he actually is. back in the day ; i had no issue winning except for when a particular regular would play as Alex . he tore me to shreds.
Alex isn’t considered bottom tier. Low tier yeah but in that fringe border case where he can be considered bottom of mid tier top of low tier. And yun isn’t top 1. No one says this but chun mains to downplay their character.
Also. *None of things at the beginning are why Alex is considered bottom 5/6. At all.* His issue isn’t parries at all. His buttons are far from notably exploitable. Nor does he have particularly laggy moves. One of the safer sweeps, and one of the only neutral on block moves in the game. Ffs his medium punch is tied for second fastest move in the game with most LIGHTS. He has a light with higher priority & builds meter while being fast on all accounts still. I don’t know where you got this misinformation from but completely off. Alex’s issues are that he has limited ways of utilizing his meter (which is the reason ppl pick sa2 do you got they right at least….), limited combo routes, limited ranged parry rewards & has the worst lows in the game sans Remy meaning all together he struggles to get good consistent offense & has to take more risks to be able combo ppl outside of parry. It’s not that he lacks combos or mix ups, he has those. It’s that he only can get medium into chop every time vs Hugo getting light confirms into super, and his mix up is purely strike throw based but with nothing to get you to low parry he has nothing to create a real mental stack. The part that makes this so insane is that these are literally the issues every non high tier has generally; no long range parry option, no good lows for combos, less uses for meter, & limited combo routes. 13 characters have the same downsides & half of your ones on Alex were either wrong, or misunderstanding the issue.
If you truly want to be good in a frightening game theirs two characters you need. A F characters and a basic character this teaches you how to maximize what you have even if it’s not the best to win.
I think it’s partially the other “trash” characters in all other fighting games chosen in pro league. They don’t know how to counter these picks like how they would like even B-tier characters. I think Sonic Fox did this with a Mortal Kombat round.
There's one thing that "low tier" characters and non meta players always have going for them. Their opponents having less muscle memory and ecpetiance fighting them because pris are usually fighting meta stuff.
They're both so strong that, even tho people think Chun is the best, Yun can also be said to be the best and no one would bat an eye. The only difference is difficulty imo
Genei Jin is the best SA in the game. Makes a lot of pokes have SA priority, melts health and after Genei Jin is done, Yun can still build meter during the juggle. Also has the most oppressive dive kick in the game and some really great buttons. Those great buttons can also lead to small combos that build tons of meter. He also has a better match up against Chun Li and a really great run away game.
So I'm not super familiar with the competitive SF community. I'm a casual at best from back in the days of Turbo 2. But you make a comment near the end about the game allowing for player skill is at the forefront. But isn't third strike like notoriously imbalanced? With champs like Yun and Chun Li just in their own tier above the rest to an almost laughable level? I guess my end question would be this: If the final opponent had been playing a character that wasn't in the S++ Tier at the top level would that player have done as well or would Genki have had enough of a mountain to climb that this video would have had the same impact?

Alex is a character so endearing that even with his lowly spot on the tier list, I can’t help but play him. He’s so fun. And Genki is our hero.
The hyper bomb is super satisfying to finish a match with and especially the suplex city version
I've been playing alex since 2004, even though it's a uphill battle for me I still enjoy the fights...and with parry...I'm not scared of anything..

Sometimes playing a bad character may make your opponent make mistakes or overconfident. Nobody expects that and may even laugh at how silly it is.
The problem with Alex is that most of his pokes don’t have a special/super cancel which makes him hard to play

A lot of people consider Yun to be #1, but there's a strong argument either way.
The best character is the one you win with. Also goes for personal character.
You can Teir up any character you want.... If a player takes that character and REALLY learns the ins and outs of it... They can all be top Teir.
Yun is not considered the best in the game. He is 2nd best, but Chun is definitely better.
