Heavy duty Swiss clockwork fan

- These 'windup' or clockwork fans were made by E. Paillard & Co. in Switzerland in the 1910s. They were intended for tropical countries and other areas not yet having electricity. The heavy duty spring motor provided a light breeze lasting about 30 minutes on a full winding. Paillard was famous for its fine music boxes and phonographs. The company also made hot air or stirling cycle fans at around the same time.

A brilliant and beautiful design. I wonder why these aren't around, there isnt electricity everywhere.
I wish they still made things like this. One of these would be great during a power outage or an area with no power.

There is certainly a market for such devices in modern times as emergency use/disaster prepping gear
I might buy one if it is not too overly priced. £60 to £80 maybe, that is what I am prepared anyway. It doesn't have to be so ornate. 🙂

I'm pretty sure if it be balanced and aligned will last more than 30 minutes... that severely unbalanced blade does a lot of drag!.
With proper optimisation, something like this could last for hours, and I wonder if it is possible to put a component to moderate the speed of the mechanism (something similar to a flywheel governor)

I have a fan like this that is a family heirloom, but it needs some work. Can you tell me if there is any published manuals, diagrams, parts listings, etc available?
I have consulted with some restoration experts and they want more than the fan is worth for its repair/restoration. I think they are trying to get me to sell them the fan so they can make money off it.
I am sorry but as far as I know there is no published information about these fans, not even a catalog description. And the only source of parts would be another fan or having the parts made by a clock maker. Do you have any friends who are clock makers or clock repair specialists? Mine also required restoration. I don't know where you are located but I could possibly help you if you are in the US.

They should use this more in Europe.. there is a heatwave there and less electrical power..

These were mass produced but in small numbers. Honestly I think they were not very practical and also expensive.

I don't remember but it is a lot of winding like an antique phonograph.

On a full winding it will run for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

You wind for about a minute or less; no chopped fingers--blade are extremely lightweight.

Esta genial... primero sudas dandole cuerda durante un rato pero despues te devuelve una parte de la energia dedicada a ello en forma de movimiento de aire para que te refresques.
Me ha dado una idea... el coche que anda solo... solo hay que empujarlo hasta lo alto de un puerto y desde alli dejarlo bajar por gravedad, sin necesidad de combustible ni electricidad. Voy a patentarlo.

Pues deberian buscar a alguien que les diseñe naves y estaciones espaciales que vayan a cuerda. Un ratito de manivela cada dia cada astronauta y ya esta... se acabo el problema energetico.
