I'm on my 3rd GS; '05 R1200GS, '14 R1200GS and now a '22 R1250GSA. The GS has great handling on the road, is very comfortable on long North America ventures, and one can trundle off on any backcountry dirt, gravel, forest service road you want to expand your adventure. That is what adventure touring is all about for me, and the BMW GS is the best at it in my opinion. As just an average rider, am I going to take the big, loaded GS over some gnarly, technical, rock-crawling jeep track? No, not me, that is what my KTM 690 Enduro R is for. The GS's have allowed me to have 18 years of adventure touring bliss and I don't regret one dime of purchase, maintenance, or gear costs.

@@rhyswilliams254 As an owner of a ‘12 R1200GSA and previously a ‘97 F650GS and ‘98 R1100GS, I agree it’s been a great series. I test rode the R1300GS this past weekend though. I absolutely hated it. It was cramped, the motor was so quiet and smooth it had zero character. It felt more like an electric bike. I then tried the F900GS and absolutely loved it. If you’ve loved GSs in the past, the R1300 may not be for you, but the F900GS is pretty awesome!

THAT is the reason for me to sell the bike. The engine noise between 20 - 60 km/h is so horrible that it's really annoying. There is always a small, chugging diesel truck in your ear. An unpleasant metallic sound. I have no idea why nobody at BMW engineers noticed this. My wife's 1250 R, on the other hand, sounds warm, full and motivates you to ride fast. They are worlds apart.

Excellent review as always Scott. Toward the end of the video you talked about walking in your garage and looking at the GS and the unemotional attachment. I felt the same way with my 2022 R1250GS. The motorcycle was great and I loved the look of it. However, I decided to sell it and purchase a 2022 R1250RT and I absolutely love it. Like you, I have somewhat of an emotional attachment to the RT and enjoy it more every time I ride it. My RT is the same blue as yours and people always comment what a beautiful motorcycle it is. I just can't imagine any other sport touring motorcycle that I would like as well as the RT.

I've owned a R1200RT for 4 years, drove it all around Europe, and without a doubt the RT was a great touring machine for long distance travelling. I traded it in for a R1250GS in '21 and have to say that I enjoy the GS more than the RT. The GS is more fun to ride, and I find it as good as the RT for long distance touring. The seat position is even slightly better for me as my knees are less bent than on the RT. I'm getting close to 50.000 km with the GS, after which I will traded it in for a new bike and most likely that will be a GS again. But I'll wait till all the 'childhood illnesses' are out of the 1300.

Firstly, thanks for all your reviews - really appreciated. Regarding the GS - I think potential buyers need to think about what they need. Compare to a Moto Guzzi as you get so much character for so little and then decide if you really need anything else. Personally, I have a KTM1290 Adventure and thinking of moving to a Moto Guzzi V85TT 2024 model. I just do not need loads of gizmos and 150bhp. And yes, I tour Europe regularly covering 2000+ miles in a week.

Interesting assessment! I have a 2019 R1250GS & a 2019 R1250RT. I brought my GS first and absolutely loved it as it was my Swiss army knife do all bike. I brought the RT some 12 mths later and have grown to love it. It is now my go to bike and I find the GS sitting parked in the garage a lot as I tend to jump on the RT. I have a emotional attachment to the GS in that it is my dirt road camping machine but I find myself doing very little off seal riding these days & a pub room is a lot more comfortable and I don't need to lug around camping gear - hence take the RT. I found the 1300 engine nice but didn't warm to the sound of it, the 1250 sounds more raw! I am waiting for the new 1300 RT but if it comes out looking like the Leggo GSA I won't be going near it. Keep up the great reviews.

I have owned a 2008 R1200 GSA and loved it on the road, but not on the more difficult off-road trails in Colorado because of the weight. I do love my 2017 KTM 1090R for the lighter weight, 18/21 wheel set, powerful V-twin engine, great suspension, uses a key to start, and much fewer electronics the than the new KTM 890/1290 bikes. Well, I think you are right about most of what you say, especially the noise that the engine generates. I told you a few months ago that noise can indeed be a problem if you are looking for smooth running and ‘silence’.
It is true that with 10 000 km the whole mechanics, and its noise, has softened and it doesn't seem as noisy as before (if the sound level meter doesn't lie, it has lowered some dB), nevertheless, personally I was expecting the smoothness that one expects from BMW (since in other models it can be enjoyed: in the 1250 engines and even more in the 1200).
Maybe, in the next change of bike I will go for a 4 or 6 cylinders, although I will surely find some defects in it.
Thanks for your comments, opinions and videos.

When it gets to the point that you are riding a bike because you think you ought to, rather than you want to, then it is time to part.

The bike is so much fun, it brings a smile to my face every time I ride it, and the sound of that V-twin engine with a slip-on fitted is visceral. I once had a demo on a Tracer and around town it sounded like a sewing machine, but once you opened it up it on a motorway it sounded a lot better. Since then it did Europe a few times and every time I ride it I cannot get enough. The moment that V-Twin ticks over, I have to ride it 😂. Sounds great, feels great!
Now that I have (finally) reached the moment where I want an upgrade, I found myself looking for the Suzuki V-Twin again, most likely the V-Strom 650. Turns out (after trying several) big bikes are just not for me, and I want to stay in this middle size category (confy, light, cheap, economic)

I always laugh as I said to the salesman I’ve had to drop the 1200R plus £8k for just 11hp increase. For me the 1200R was a brilliant bike but just too cramped for my 6’3” body.
Try the GS you will be pleasantly surprised. My wife and I took it round France this summer for 1400 miles in the pouring rain. If she still liked the ride after weather like that then it was the right bike for me 👍🏻👍🏻

I'd never take a bike that big, that heavy and that expensive off road. I used to fall off a lot! To me, light weight is king off road, and I'd compromise the road ability. As a pure road rider these days, I'd still buy something lighter and cheaper. Thinking of the Vstrom 800 re now.

Yes,....at least go test ride a V-Strom. You will very quickly fall in love with it. Cheaper, very reliable, lighter, ...and still a very pleasurable riding experience. My absolute dream bike was (and still is) the BMW GS [1200 years ago / 1250 past few years / and I will probably dream & drool at the 1300 GS]. But I have a few issues preventing me form getting that dream: I am more on the short side / a little shorter that average inseam. I am approaching 60 years of age and thought still very healthy, I am not as strong as I used to be and I just don't want to battle (or worry about battling) a big heavy bike. And finally...COST. Initial cost, service work/ repair work cost, insurance cost, part replacement cost, and all the cost for accessories. If you purchase a V-Strom, you will have so much more money to add any upgrade / accessory that you want to add ( and you will still be saving a huge amount of money). On my V-Strom, I quickly customized to my riding comfort: adding handlebar hight extender, hand brake position / different side mirrors including mirror extenders / adjusted gear shifter position in relation to the foot peg quite a bit ( similar adjustment on the rear brake peddle position ) / Givi Airflow adjustable windshield / replaced my seat with Comfort Seat [by Seat Concepts] / and I could go on and on. I cannot imagine being any happier now with a different motorcycle ( I had other motorcycles in the past, but this V-Strom going on 4 years now). Had no problems at all with it so far ( with the exception that my gear shifter came completely loose and detached from the gear connection rod making it impossible to change a gear. [I immediately pulled off the road and found that the positioning adjustment bolt came completely out of its threads because the 2 positioning locking bolts had come loose and allowed the bolt to slowly unthread/unscrew until it reach the end and came apart. Was able to fix it by hand temporarily until I could get home and properly torque the locking nuts on that adjustment bolt. And of course I now pre-check that part before riding]. Sorry for rambling on. I will always dream of and love the BMW GS motorcycles. Always will admire those beautiful machines so much. Sometimes its nice to just keep things a dream. I absolutely enjoy every single minute that I am riding my V-Strom. An excellent, all around bike.

But I test rode an XR as well because of the love of i4 engines and the sporty build. Never looked back. Happy owner of a 2022 S1000XR M Sport since. I am not into do it all bikes. Nice video! As for your reasons to sell it, and as a former RT owner, I kinda get that. If, that is, one is leaning more in a sport touring direction.
After two KTMs I traded #2 for a -22 1250GS spring this year. >13k done this far. I've have had GS before, so knew what I was getting into. Lost some offroad abilities vs KTM, plus some "Mr. Hyde capabilities", but that came as no surprise.
The reason for departing from KTM, none of them caused any issues for me (and one did >55.000 fault free kilometers), was purely practical. For long distance touring, and in an inspired, whimsical moment, offroad and on gravel & dirt, the 1250 does the job better than most in its class. It is undoubtedly the Swiss army knife of motorcycles. Period.
Performance-wise, the difference is not big enough to spend a wad on a 1300. So my motivation for abandoning what some claim is the best shiftcam generation engine, is nil. I know it'll run 2-300.000 km if I want it to. And as a motorcycle is an adventure tool (for me anyway) that prospect does even less to make me want to spend even more on an already excessively expensive hobby.
if I change to something, I might go back to KTM 1290. Not the last generation (doesn't suit me), but the one before it. Or look towards the 1390. In the near future we'll know what the Austrians are up to. But comparing BMW and KTM is like comparing apples and oranges. Cheers :)

The engine sound, the growl, the lack of any sensation (yes, even in the garage) will be the same with the new GSA. With that being said, the MS Rally certainly gets my attention (even if I need to reach deeper into the wallet). Thanks for the hones and refreshing insight. Tschüss!

I love, above all that excellency that the bike is and performs, the engine breaking- which is adjustable!, of the bike and its power in torque wise, it is mind blowing. I've heard from other owners that the noise varies from bike to bike but mine is one of the first bikes off the production line and is noisy. Since the initial run, I think they've done something to quiet it down but BMW has not said anything about it.

@@NothingToProve Hi Scott! Thanks, for your reply. I will watch the video you mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that BMW has a path to evolve on bettering the noise of the boxer motor which is one of the most reliable and agreeable engines to work and to use on a bike, but the Euro 5 and noise reduction policies play an essential role introducing more and more limitations in this particular field for all manufacturers. I’ve seen boxer motors running with a delicious sound but the majority of those are not legal or in conformity with the Norms and you know well how German people are. They like to do things well and by the book. Always…probably not all the People but a vast majority. So, I is what it is.

Change for the sake of change. The 1250 doesn't need more power and it handles very well. Exceptionally well actually. Only time will tell the degree of resistance to change exists. So the next bike is the 1300GSA? It's so ugly it makes the 1300GS look good. The prices on used 1250GS here in the UK are amazing and a low-millage bike comes in at around 14k. Lots of money saving there.

i was on the same but its not true. it looks ugly on pictures, yes, but in real life look really good.

Quite interesting. My Beemers are of the 1150 variety. I hate(d) Adv bikes. They are ugly, I'll never go off road and I'm a road race fan... However... I sold my RT and kept my GS. Funny enough because I feel the GS has much more character than the RT. Also I feel the boxer fits the GS much better than the RT. If I ever go for another touring bike it will be either the FJR or a BMW K series. 4 cilinders are a minimum for me on a touring bike. But for now, my GS, even though I never ever will go off road, fits the bill perfectly. Oh... I do keep a VFR 750 in the shed for a nice ride on a bike with a very smooth engine.

Any bike that's talked about as a distance machine has to also be measured in terms of fuel efficiency & service frequency & costs. As you say there are bikes that will beat the GS for bragging rights in terms of speed & road performance, like the Ducati, but they come at an ongoing higher $$ cost for service & fuel efficiency. Sometimes it's just apples and oranges.

I'm never going to "upgrade" from my 1250 GSA, but I understand why people love the 1300 GS. It's just more suitable for normal people - me being abnormal.

Strange nobody is mentioning the increased engine rattle noise coming from the fork cavity. I noticed a similar noise coming off thr 1200, when I first rode it, coming off a Kawasaki versys 650, but now I am used to it. KTM 890 is famous for rattling noises voming from the engine. Listening to the engine sound of an Africa Twin, I was surprised about valve chatter noise, also. The phenomenon of irritating noise is similar to a dripping sink tap in the middle of the night when you want to sleep. It is more perception, than an actual problem.

You simply did not watch to the end. This IS the main reason why I'm selling it.

Triumph tiger 1200 has the same issue, i tested it and found the engine mechanical noise coming up from the forks UNBEARABLE. That, and the lack of low end torque compared to the boxer, made me not buy it. Got a new R1250 RT and couldn't be more happy, goven the fact that i also have other bikes that cover the 'emotional' side of riding

I am struggling with the engine noise on my 1300. The bike 🚴 s perfect for the two up riding we always do on the west coast of Canada. 🍁 am hoping that a change to a louder exhaust will mask this

Really interesting video and points. I bought one of the last shape 1250 gsa in blue , red and white and definitely get a great feeling when I open the garage . I totally get the emotional side . My previous bike was a ktm superadventure s and was brilliant to ride but quite unreliable which spoilt it for me .

I have r1200gs vstrom1050xt yamaha xt1200z. They are all the same genre, but the driving taste is different, so I ride them all. BMW is the most comfortable for traveling, but the driving taste and mechanical perfection are a little better for 1050xt. And it is the heaviest, but I feel that the touring aspect is a little better for xt1200z. I think a motorcycle is a fun toy.
