It's been somewhat of a surprise with KTM, BMW, Yamaha all announcing new automated shifting models this year. Having owned both DCT ATs and Gold Wings, I found the system to be perfectly reliable and usable, if not so much *perfect*. I think it's great to have this as an option for those riders who need or desire it.
Not really a surprise. EU regulation came into effect in July to require cars, trucks and buses to include speed limiting technology and other tech. Bikes were exempt from this because the technology was not there, but manufacturers can see the writing on the wall and as those requirements are easier to implement on auto bikes manufacturers are preparing.

Rode the 1300 for a week earlier this year. This addresses another problem for them. A very clunky quick shifter which struggled at highway rpms. Shame they haven't improved the shift cam as well
It will cause problems and break down on customer bikes. Mark my words on that. Just look at the 1300 GS's shitshow of a track record. 😂 In comparison DCT is perfection and never breaks. Clearly superior technology. Smokey, great job again. 🤙🏼
What is missed about my DCT bike was that you couldn't just give it a little rev without the bike going forward. Switched it for a GS. If I go for a 1300, it will be with a clutch.
Just taken delivery of a 2025 Africa Twin DCT after 10 years of BMWs (1 RT, 1 GS and two GSAs); all brilliant bikes, but I prefer the ATAS DCT already.
Hi Smokey, I am really really tempted to buy a GS with ASA. But I already have a 1300GS…… and I love it!! But ASA is an improvement I think (clutch on mine is a bit clunky in the 1-2 gears) Would have loved it if they offered this when they introduced the 1300. Maybe I will visit my local dealer 😇
Absolutely loved your ASA introduction. Informative and fun like always. Only thing I didn’t get is if the automatic back shifting changes in dynamic. Also I have to wait until someone tries ASA offroad.
Great review! I'm impressed with the functionality. It seems like it could deal with an emergency stop while splitting lanes (California) without causing any jerky movements, and allow you to get right back on the throttle to carry on. But, is it worth the price? Hmm.... This is where I really appreciate electric vehicle performance. You can be buttery smooth accelerating & deceleration... Just need battery tech to catch up for range / recharge on m-cycles.
Fascinating tech and I guess it was inevitable that this comes. I can definitely see this get adapted quickly. As long as they can make it work reliable.
I tried a bike with an automatic clutch , if you like the sensation of your bike being out of control, when it changes on its own accord, coming into corners etc, then its for you. The only automatic engine is found in a true belt driven twist and go, they are smooth and brilliant! And due to friction in the system, just take your hand off the throttle and they will slow you down nice and gentle like!
Do you think the ASA system will be incorporated into models like the F800GS or will it only be used with boxer engines? It would be very interesting if it were incorporated into almost the entire range.
@@LifeofSmokey When we talk about the future, how far ahead are we? I would like to buy the F800GS right now. That's why I have a question. Thanks for your answer.
To be fair to Honda, they started this game and have persisted to a point where dct is very good. I think the other manufacturers have finally come round to the concept, but obviously they have learnt from Honda’s experience and refined their take on what they think is best. Time will tell, but I expect it’s more legislation and emissions driven.
This looks pretty darned good. I'm an Africa Twin DCT owner & I love my DCT but it looks as though BMW's D mode is more like our S or S2 - a lot more peppy. I do think the whole thing with needing to hold in the front brake is a bit of extra faff nobody really needs though. With DCT it's just get on, turn the key, press the switch to start the engine, switch to D mode from neutral & go. One big question though - can you bump start an R1300GS with ASA? I love how they've managed to minimise the extra weight. Time will tell as regards the electronics - do BMW Motorrad electronics have a rep for reliability?
I mean, realistically in the new 1300 one would use the clutch only to go from 1st to 2nd, all other gears can be managed with the pedal shift. So, this system makes sense.
It looks good, but considering BMW have used their customers as test riders for the complete first year of the R1300GS, I don't want to imagine the multiple headaches the BMW ASA test riders (customers) will face. Have they already solved the recalls for the cases locking system and the starter relay?
Can't wait for it to make it on to the RT. I use my RT for slow speed marshalling and balancing the clutch at walking pace for 2 or 3 hours is a pain in the rear
@@LifeofSmokey I already have a NC750 with DCT so I know I will. I have an RT for the marshalling and NC for work. Would rather have an RT that does both
At first I thought the r1300 looked so ugly but I was sure about one thing. That the riding characteristics would be amazing on it compared to the r1200/r1250 and mannnn was I right... The bikes riding feel is amazing! And after riding it the looks is kinda sinking in and I like it! Stoked to buy the r1300 GSA next year!
It's a pity that they didn't introduce right away with the start of production of GS1300 only after almost a year. In my case, 2 weeks after receiving the motorcycle from the dealer went into the world information about the AGX. I would have bought for sure if there had been such an option then
Thanks Smokey, great video. Won’t comment on the automatic tranś until I ride one and since I’m not a famous TH-camr like you, that may take some time😂
In general electronics is advancing fast and becoming reliable BUT when/if it goes wrong it is a bugger to fix. I've always driven automatic cars and the modern elctronically control boxes are reliable. I've only just got my first quick shifter and keep using the clutch, doh! but I'll learn. Will I get an auto bike, not sure. Good video, review and more craziness.
Can you suggest reasons not to choose for the automatic gearbox? I mean regarding from driving perspective, because they learn you at the driving school to play with the clutch and you don't have control anymore on the other hand comfort will increase enormous driving in heavy traffic, city traffic. How does it feel in comparison with the dual clutch?
One issue I had with my 2016 Africa Twin DCT is I couldn't pull the clutch when coasting slowly to a stop or through tight corners at low revs when the engine would be jerky. I actually wore out the rubber dampers in the rear hub quite fast.
What I don't understand is how to do all those low speed manoeuvres that normally require the heavy use of the clutch friction zone on this thing. Do you just use the rear brake or what?
@@LifeofSmokey I mean imagine you need to make a U-turn in a tight space. Normally I would use my clutch lever half way as well as the rear brake and make it at a very slow speed. So, the engine won’t be stalled.
I traded my 2018 Goldwing DCT for my 2023 GSA. No regrets at all. I loved the DCT. It's absolutely flawless. Yeah, it took me some time to get used to a clutch again. This is my first hearing about the ASA. I'm not sure it will be as reliable as the DCT, though. Only time will tell. No way would I trade my GSA for a new ASA. Honda has many years invested in their DCT technology and have ironed out the bugs. Ever since I've ridden a DCT I have said in the back of my mind that other brands will follow suit with their own versions.
what I like is that there is another option. So if someone wants it, now they have it :) I don't need it, but I'm sure there are people who breathed a sigh of relief that they can have automatic gear change and GS.
Nice video. If you drive a lot in the city and in the traffic, that make sense. Burning up clutch in traffic is not the best case. So i would go for a ASA buying a new motorbike. You have advantage of stop-and-go cases + possibility to switch it manually if you need an old school feeling. Btw, what are the extra costs for ASA option?
I doubt this will work as good as DCT but let's not get ahead the facts. The real deal would be when you could operate totally manually with clutch lever and gear lever and also fully automatic for lazy cruising or dense city traffic. With all the fairing, comfy suspension and gadgets the style of operating gears (left side) and brakes (right side) is one of the few main differences between car and bike. Removing clutch is like taking it away which is ok on commuter bike like nc750 but on expensive GS it should be preserved somehow. 😉
I don’t understand why motorcycle manufacturers with all their might are trying to stay away from scooter/bicycle “left lever = brake” layout. Automatic transmission just begs for it
Hi, groetjes vanuit Brussel. Groetjes
Beautiful looking bike but the complex automatic electronics puts me off. And apart from it going wrong I'd rather have control and trust myself, over some electronic sensors with my life.. For instance, what do you do if the engine seizes and the back wheel locks up if you can't pull the clutch in to roll away from the skid? You fall off is what you do. I was alongside my brother as his engine seized while he was on a bike on motorway with a juggernaut less than 10 metres behind him at 110kmh. If he hadn't been able to pull in his clutch immediately he would have gone under the truck and perished in that moment. I'll never buy a bike that doesn't have a clutch. p.s. if you're reading this Joe, love ya bro :)

Too funny! As soon as you said electronic motor I thought” More expensive sh?t that will break down”…..and then you said exactly that. 🤣
I predict this will become a popular option for touring and commuting riders who don't ride off road.
The DCT works well on the Honda’s. I’m sure many will buy this version of the GS. I can’t wait to try / review one myself. 👍
What is missed about my DCT bike was that you couldn't just give it a little rev without the bike going forward. Switched it for a GS. If I go for a 1300, it will be with a clutch.
What about neutral, 😅
Just taken delivery of a 2025 Africa Twin DCT after 10 years of BMWs (1 RT, 1 GS and two GSAs); all brilliant bikes, but I prefer the ATAS DCT already.
The 2025 Africa Twin isn't even available yet...
@@Waldo1122 yes it is, I have one. Honda started issuing the 2025 models from the end of July.
More stuff that can break down. Mine automatic height control just broke down on mine 1300GS 😢
Sorry to hear. How old is the bike?
Hi Smokey, I am really really tempted to buy a GS with ASA. But I already have a 1300GS…… and I love it!! But ASA is an improvement I think (clutch on mine is a bit clunky in the 1-2 gears) Would have loved it if they offered this when they introduced the 1300. Maybe I will visit my local dealer 😇
The wife would never know if you come back with the same colour bike but missing a clutch lever 🤫
Smokey, Does it have reverse? I'd like it more in an RT version. Thanks. -Glen
I have a CRF1100 DCT. Can’t wait to check out BMW’s asa system on the GS.
The technology is intresting, personally i feel bmw should have left a standard clutch as a backup/option for different riding demands
Think they will use it on all models in the future 😊
@@LifeofSmokey When we talk about the future, how far ahead are we? I would like to buy the F800GS right now. That's why I have a question. Thanks for your answer.
Wunderlich sells a cup holder for the gsa which makes absolute sense now
To be fair to Honda, they started this game and have persisted to a point where dct is very good. I think the other manufacturers have finally come round to the concept, but obviously they have learnt from Honda’s experience and refined their take on what they think is best. Time will tell, but I expect it’s more legislation and emissions driven.
watching you video or the first time ,i should say that was fun
0ne of those things I didn't know I needed. I will probably stick with a regular clutch. For the time being maybe later on I might be interested.
really loved the experience from the home screen...would go up for it prolly next year when its available
Awesome video! And as funny as ever, thank you! 😂 ASA looks like a fun rocket 😎
Will it wheelie properly Smokey? We need to know!
I want to see how is it in offroad and if its possible do wheelie on dirt 🤔 I like it at first glance 🤩
why wouldn't it be possible?
That was fun!!😁
love it, more manufacturers will catch the train shortly.... cheers V!
It looks good, but considering BMW have used their customers as test riders for the complete first year of the R1300GS, I don't want to imagine the multiple headaches the BMW ASA test riders (customers) will face.
Have they already solved the recalls for the cases locking system and the starter relay?
Really it's life changing
Can't wait for it to make it on to the RT. I use my RT for slow speed marshalling and balancing the clutch at walking pace for 2 or 3 hours is a pain in the rear
You will love it!
I would have bought for sure if there had been such an option then
Thank You Almighty God I will buy one for myself
What happens when you killswitch it at low speed?
It looks like AMT, you just shift the gear and system will control the clutch. Correct me if im wrong ✌️
Finally I love bmw ❤
Thanks Smokey, great video. Won’t comment on the automatic tranś until I ride one and since I’m not a famous TH-camr like you, that may take some time😂
Hey Smokey ! When is this available to purchase from BMW? Kind regards Ezra
You can place orders now 😊
@smokey How does ASA works with Cruise and Radar ?
The same , it will do everything like it should 😊
That top-case is nice looking! Is that OEM?
Yeah but they fly off so not available anymore 😅🙈
How to move the bike if the battery is out?
Which brand model do you think is more efficient and fun in terms of shift assistance. Is it GS 1300 or African twin?
I'm curious how it works offroad. If it does well there, it's an option.
Honda invented the DCT.. and touch screen. However I would like to have a go on this GS .
The Honda DCT feels more smooth , the GS ASA feels a bit more mechanic.
@@LifeofSmokey I see it as an invention, see what happened during the years in the car industry
@@bendekimpe35nobody like automatic cars with paddle shifters....most people don't want manual anymore. For me it's just fun to ride different ways 😁
The bike does all the clutching for you 😊
@@LifeofSmokey I mean imagine you need to make a U-turn in a tight space. Normally I would use my clutch lever half way as well as the rear brake and make it at a very slow speed. So, the engine won’t be stalled.
This bike simply will never ever stall 😊
@@LifeofSmokey wow. Impressive. Got my shiny new 1300 GS on the previous week and honestly I hadn’t known about ASA before.
hey Smokey like to see it off road in some technical sections at slow speed please
Smokey this is very good bike from bmw😊
This is like the AT dct but with another 45 hp, choice made.
... and 40% + price
The only thing i missed on my AT 1100 DCT was the ability to rev ... so can u rev around with this BMW?
When you put it in neutral yes 😁
@@LifeofSmokeyyeah same problem like with Honda DCT 😢
yessss! BMW is king again :)
It's the future of all motorcycles. Automatic transmission
Is this ASA going to be available for the GSA as well??
Why not a rear gear ?
It was good to see an area that I am familiar with, nice surprise. (From Australia)
My new dream bike 😍
I don’t understand why motorcycle manufacturers with all their might are trying to stay away from scooter/bicycle “left lever = brake” layout. Automatic transmission just begs for it
damn BMW you just killed me , i’ve only just bought a 1300 ..and now i want the ASA …
Me too 😂😂😂
@@kemalgunbas same here :D
Same.
Sly move by BMW, again, never buy when a model is first launched. Give it a year, sort out problems, and always changes/improvements are made.
@@Fatcatztravel1250 let’s solve problems together 😄😄😄
Need to try this myself, could be awesome. May be silly!! Great vid.
Yey better chances for us who dont know how to manual shift. I mean like a lot of us will want to buy now cause of these DUE advancements
Hi, groetjes vanuit Brussel.
Just perfect! 🔥
Que locura de moto, saludos Smokey
