So apparently I am not a Grandmaster at life: sometimes I make decisions that are not great and I end up in interesting positions. Thanks for helping me debug my life. 😂
checkmate with 0.1 second left was such an incredible move! man Nelson was lucky to find the only one correct tactical move to win the game! GG Nelson! ‼️
@@QwDragon not really, because if his opponent had blocked with the knight, then BxN premove would be mate. So it was 50/50 as there were only 2 possible moves and both had a different mate premove. Its also more likely his opponent saw the checkmate of BxN rather than g5 as the bishop was already delivering check.
If you premove with 0.1 seconds and you GIVE CHECKMATE with that, you actually win with 0.0 seconds, because mate is stronger than timeout. I once had a game like it, and it was my best game I played in 2023. It feels so good man... ❤
Great ending to the game! Really nice pattern! 1. If he plays Ng5 instead of Nxf6, you lose on time, so I'm glad he didn't do that. 2. Rg1 is indeed fancy, but Rg2 is actually the same thing. And even more: you can play Rg2 instead of Bf6, threatening Bf2#, Bf6# and g5#. Remarkable, Ne4 stops all of them, but then you can still deflect the knight with Bf6+ and end with g5#, like in the game, or with g5+ and end with Bf2# (but not with Bf2+??, because of Ng3!!). Good job! Keep up the nice work you are doing! Best, Victor
First off, Nelsi, you are a great chess player. You may not be a GM but you also may have a more fun and fulfilling career, which is arguably more important. In either case, this is a damn beautiful mate. Killer stuff man. Keep it up.
Nelson time pressure was hell ! AND you made a True GG....Meaning a Great Game! Thanks for keeping it honest by admitting luck was involved! OMG the opponent must of been screaming too! Thanks for sharing!
I love your love of the game! It shows especially well in this video, but often in nearly every video you do. I like how you show us your losses too, and how it hurts, but you try to learn from those mistakes! I use to watch other unnamed higher rated players doing live chess, but I am now watching your videos exclusively as of late. Keep up the great work and God bless you and your family!
Epic finish, I would have played the double check Rg5 and gone on to lose 😅 This actually happens to me often where I’m up material and my opponent plays aggressive moves and I usually blunder somewhere and throw the game.
Speaking as someone who is _bad_ at chess, accidentally getting checkmate when you thought you were just putting the opponent in check because you think you have no other option is a common occurrence. 🤣
The Knight wasn't forced to take the Bishop on f6. N-g5 was a move to block the check. Doesn't stop the checkmate, though, as Bxg5 still gets the job done. However, in this particular situation, N-g5 almost certainly gives White the win on time, which makes the premove pawn checkmate even more beautiful.
You are a great player though, Nelson. Yes you're not at GM level, but you know to look for good moves, and you teach us that with your videos. You know when you're in bad situations, you keep playing, seen a few of your videos where you've said don't resign, there's still a chance. You instantly recognised you were in trouble after a bad calculation and knew to keep checking and just playing good moves, your subconscious took over and you used the kings vulnerability to keep yourself alive. If you had more time, you'd have calculated that checking pattern, and would've talked us through how there must be a win there with the king so vulnerable. But you didn't have time to calculate the mate in 5, you just went with your instinct, which was spot on. Well done, again. 👏👏👏
It reminds me of a game I played-featured on your channel, called ACCIDENTAL CHECKMATE. The big difference was my game was untimed, so it was missing the 007 drama.
What a great game! With the time to think, and knowing there's something there, I found all the moves! Not directly the mate in 5, but with pausing to think those were exactly the moves I chose. Learning so much from the channel! Thanks Nelson!
Such an amazing game is unbelivable, just a quick note, for some reason we tend to act differently when we know someone is watching, this applies to cameras too, so prehaps recording this quick sessions could end up not being such a good idea since it may take away the edge you need in this time constraints
On the move where you played Bf6, I found a mate in 3, but it wasn't the same one. I just played Rg2 first with kind of 3 mate threats. He plays Ne4 to stop the bishop in both directions, but you still play Bf6+, he takes, and g5 mate. It's kind of just a transposition. I checked in the engine and both my move and Bf6 are mate in threes.
What Nelson missed was if his opponent realized Kf6 was the losing move all his opponent had to do to win on time was Kg5 for the block to make Nelson pre-move unplayable. This game actually came down to a 50/50 quick choice from his opponent.
Dude, that was a sweet checkmate. I've lucked into a few where I didn't see it.but my instincts led me to it. You bring a lot of.value to players under 1000- like me- and I respect your honesty. Great stuff Nelson. Thanks and keep bringing it.
Back when I was 900 in blitz I delivered a ladder mate with 0.1 during a game I had no right winning. Despite the low level of play and the ease of the checkmate, it felt euphoric. I understand how this probably felt.
I wanna thank you for all these info you have provided. I have always loved this game even though I had no idea on how to play it. Im not great by no means but I am far better than I use to be with all the knowledge that you have been pouring on youtube. So thank you and blessings to you and your family 🙏🏽
I want to watch the AverageJoe rating climb in order. I am finding it frustrating to find the next one each time on TH-cam. Peter Patzer rating climb had a play list which I finally found. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It made it really easy. Could you let me know how to find the next sequential video?
This is incredible to watch. Never had a game like this but that's mostly because I'm never on the winning side of the board haha. Congratulations to you good sir you earned this victory!!!
What's funny is that if he had noticed the clock with his 1:11 of time, and simply manipulated it by playing the unexpected blunder knight to g5, you would have lost the game - you still had a mate with bishop g5 but it wouldn't have been premoved and you had 0.2 left on the clock
Haha very nice!! I’m much more likely to discover these moments in the game review than by actually playing the moves but finding this in such dramatic style is definitely one for the cookie jar!!
The beauty of it is if the guy had thought about his move for more than 3 seconds, he might have realized that was the correct move. If you are sitting there in that situation see you are getting checkmated but realize the only way you lose is if you oponent premoves, well, you should be able to figure out what his premove will be. It was still the oponents game to win even though he had a losing position.
It's an interesting meta-strategy. Taking the bishop is more natural but either one is a forced mate anyway. With 1:14 on the clock you can spend a few seconds to see that Nelson has to premove, so making the less obvious move is a good strategy.
Congrats on a wonderful win! My opinion is that after you pass a 1900 rating for a while, there is this I call “natural perspective” that chess players develop. You feel there is something in the position because you know the patterns. And that is what chess is all about pattern recognition. You know a pawn, a knight and a rook in a certain configuration must have something to it. This is an example of a Arabian, or Epaulette checkmate??? So you knew the pattern and you went with it. Now “seeing” it… well you had less time to be able to “SEE” but enough time to “KNOW” the pattern! And just to say it, my Mom (RIP) was a psychiatrist and she studied the brain and how it works a lot, and she did share with me some physiological and psychological changes that the chess player goes through. I guess I was her Guinea Pig of research! Well done, and very exciting!
If I had been the other player, I would have resigned. Because resigning with .2 seconds left would be hilarious. He spent 3 seconds on that move. But Im betting he knew he was getting checkmated. He just hoped your time would run out before you found it. If I move quick, he may not get it...
Awesome win Nelson! You can't cut it any closer than that. It's funny, the time running out forced you to make a move that you may not have found otherwise. Hypothetically, if you had two minutes left on the clock do you think you would have found that without guessing?
WOW! That's an amazing game! Thanks so much for sharing that win with us! 🥰 It's good to know that I'm not the only person that physically jumps out of my chair to celebrate surprising wins!
Amazing stuff. Just wondering, would you have avoided some of the drama if you had played Rg2 instead of Bf6? The knight is still holding the mating net closed and you’d be threatening checkmate three different ways, bishop from either diagonal or the g pawn. I don’t think white can stop all three.
We all, who regularly play chess games (at whatever ratings) know the feeling of winning a game in last seconds with down a piece or two. That’s what make game of the chess so so fascinating. @NM - ❤this and your educational videos. At times, we end up in same situation, but on the other side of it 😊 It’s not over, until it’s really over is a winning Mantra of war and chess, which spirit creates legends after all.
That was great. But, for some odd reason, I think that ‘smothered’ checkmates that you have done to your opponents are even more crafty or impressive. P.S. Love watching and learning from your TH-cam videos. You rock 🤘🏽
Brilliant mate Nelsi, I thought of Rg2 but nowhere near your level man, I had a LOT of time to think it through unlike yourself (and Rg1 didn't make a difference,) but again I had too much time to think LOL.

Take your victory lap, my man, that is epic! I recently won a game with 0.2 seconds and that adrenaline rush kept my spirits up for days.

not only did you win with 0.1s on the clock, you also won with an epic checkmate
Checkmating with a pawn move is like getting a hole in one in golf. So rare, so satisfying.
Thanks for your honesty in describing the action and what you saw at each stage, it makes rest of us feel better.
Double exclam! What a finish. As a pre-move, you could always claim you saw it six moves back. Nobody would doubt you on a photo-finish like that.
Great ending to the game! Really nice pattern!

Yes, Ng5 would have won, if only on time, as BxN would then have won for Nelson. But he'd not premoved that
Love your enthusiasm! Thanks for sharing the game. .1 seconds is absolutely wild

I really wanna know what was his opponent's reaction. 😂
In my head, it’s a Darth Vader-style “NOOOOO!”
Something along the lines WTF
we should search his opponent and see if he is a streamer and happened to record this game.
He tells himself Chess is stupid and has nightmares. It haunts him in every game while Nelson posts the game for the world to see.

So proud of you Nelson!!!!

I'm 1250 (in rapid) and it took me like 40 seconds to find the winning tactic. It's weirdly intuitive but also counterintuitive. Brilliant game

Awesome save, Nelson! It is indeed a beautiful checkmate! Well done in not giving up, persevering, and fighting back!!! 👏👏👏
The checkmate is in itself incredible beautiful
I think a movie should be made about this! Well done, Nelson!

Same thought(s) 🙂
Same here, I was thinking double check
Speaking as someone who is _bad_ at chess, accidentally getting checkmate when you thought you were just putting the opponent in check because you think you have no other option is a common occurrence. 🤣
Rg2 does the same thing but is theoretically better because it does not expose your rook to capture (2 squares diagonal from knight) Incredible finish
The opponent couldn’t have captured the rook anyway they were in check
The Knight wasn't forced to take the Bishop on f6. N-g5 was a move to block the check. Doesn't stop the checkmate, though, as Bxg5 still gets the job done.
However, in this particular situation, N-g5 almost certainly gives White the win on time, which makes the premove pawn checkmate even more beautiful.
Nelson, this is absolutely mind blowing!! Wow! What a way to finish off the game! 🙌 🙌 ❤
When you delivered that checkmate I just couldn’t help but bust out laughing and clapping my hands.
Prettiest checkmate I've seen in a while. Very good stuff!

Yes!! Nice!! I promise your opponent jumped up and screamed even louder..
..., Rg2 would have been more time-efficient :D On the other hand, Ng5 would have stopped the premove leading to a White win
Ng5 loses to BxN premove checkmate. More obvious checkmate than the pawn push as the bishop is already delivering check
Sad but true, since the correct move to respond to that Ng5 blocking of the bishop check would be Bxg5#, not pawn to g5#.
