They are really quite different from the North, aren't they. More remote; fewer boats; longer cruising periods; and - of course, stronger tides. I've been a solo helmsman for the past two years and there's alays something exciting (slightly nerve-racking) about going past that yellow post and onto the Southern, far-off reaches, of The Broads. Great vid btw. I'm gonna be going from Thorpe (first time with Freedom Boats) next month. So far they seem like a nice little independent yard; with very reasonably priced craft. Taken a boat with 6'3" airdraft as would like a stab at getting to the 'forbidden zone': Hickling Broad.
What boat did you take from Barnes? I had JAZZ last year. Old fit and design but she was a really nice, well fitted out, dual helm, craft.

    Hi Darren
I came across this today - thanks for putting it up so long ago. I found it interesting as it reminded me of a book - Coot Club - by Arthur Ransome, which I read as a child. Great to see the location for the story.

2 questions for you 1 can you moor up in Norwich and 2 can you go to gt Yarmouth as I seen the sign in your video as we have never done cruising and plan to do our first in 2018

Anthony Parker hello, sorry for the late reply however I think their is a bug on TH-cam app, I only received the notification today!
Yes you can moor up at Norwich Yacht station (as long as your crafts air draught is no more than 9' due to Trouse Railway Bridge. It's £12 to moor for the night with electric hook up and nice showers.
You can also moor at Yarmouth yacht station too

That was helpful, thanks. How long did it take you? Hoping to go for 3 days next summer. Only ever been on school trip & youth club trip before just for the day.

Hi, thankyou, if you allow an hour from Yarmouth to Burney Arms/Borough Castle sometimes less if you time the tides and cross just after slack water as the flood tide will help you

Can I ask, We are looking at renting one of these. Was the boat speed limited? What was the top speed of the boat because of the tidal rivers etc. I know speed limits are enforced though. thanks!

Joshua Ellis most rivers are 5mph and some of the more open rivers are 6. When passing through Yarmouth you need to time it with Slack water (1 hour 15) after low tide. You then run with the tide which keeps fuel cost down. Again use this method on the more Tidal southern rivers. Braydon water has no speed limit. I prefer a craft with a plaining hull rather than those flat bottom bathtub looking boats

Darren Cornwell so the boats are restricted from going over a certain speed physically?

You arrived to early, arrive at slack water then you will have no tide to worry about. It's the overtaking crafts responsibility to stay clear over the overtaken craft.

To much fuss made about crossing breydon water it doesn’t matter what the tide is doing.

cant make head or tail of this video you crossed breydon and before you completed the crossing the video shows you going back towards the right turn for breydon and straight on for Norwich then your at Reedham swing Bridge then suddenly your leaving Norwich cut to many interesting sites out which makes it a bit confusing
