There is an artist on ETSY ( I think out of South Korea) who is doing African Blackwood scales for the F1x. I purchased the scales for my Elmax F1x and was very pleased. 1- it is flush with the handle making the grip more comfortable (obviously this might impair the scales on battoning but way more substantial grip; the thermorin scales are shit and peel off at screw points) 2- in the aesthetic design of the grip are hidden finger grooves which eliminate what I was afraid would be sweet spots in the handle. The scales also fit the factory sheath. I love the modifications they did to the X sheaths but to keep the factory sheath one is very limited in handle scale design. I had reached out to Erick at Falkniven suggesting they might want to offer varied scales for both the more practical purpose of a better handle material that could suit the thinness required to fit the sheath ( stronger material than thermorin) and to allow one to mix and match to dress up the knife - keep the suit get a new tie as it were, but he did not seem ready to do this. Maarten was going thru the death of his mother at the time, so I just took it at that. I think it would be a cool comparison.... So.... I bought BOTH knives and did my own test!!!!! The ELMAX F1x out of the box was crazy sharp with a score of 105 on the BESS "EDGE ON UP Industrial sharpness tester. The COs F1x out of the box was still scary sharp with a score of 128. I cut a few pieces of rope and tested again. The ELMAX was at 115 and the COs was at 140. I then stropped them both 10 passes with some "Gunny Juice" 9 micron diamond stropping emulsion. (I highly recommend that stuff, it's amazing stropping emulsion) After the passes on the strop, the F1x in ELMAX was a 95!!!! and the F1x COs was at 118!!!!. Both razor sharp but that ELMAX is a beast of a steel! Hope this is informative for you. I should have recorded my testing, but I am not a TH-camr! Thanks for replying to my comment! I also think it's the sharpest I've ever received out of the box, and I own a few thin Spydercos and Benchmade folders...
Hi Maarten and Mikkie, based on your knowledge of steels, I would like to know what is your opinion of the new VG7 WOLF steel that Fallknjven uses for the F1 model, if it is indeed a good choice compared to the Cos laminate or other steels of the past. Greetings from Italy
That is two totally different knives my friend. The only thing they have in common is the steel. It would be better in my opinion to compare it to the TRC K-1s. That is a similarly sized knife.
I was really curious about this knife. But I am getting to the point where it is getting harder to justify buying more knives. But I will do anyway and it will be all the fault of you guys. I hope you're proud of yourselves!

Good video as always 👌 Can you make a fallkniven F1X cos vs F1X Elmax? Edge retention, easy of sharpening, strength 💪 etc ?? Show us the pros and cons from this too steels. Please 🙏
I don’t know, was very disappointed with Fällkniven knives. I bought an S1 and an S1X both knives were made horribly bad quality wise… Asymmetric Blades, not flush fitting handles, rattling sheeth etc. But the most annoying thing for me is if the Knives aren’t symmetrical! Just like these cheap 30€ Amazon Chinese sh###! I was lucky to get an limited edition of the Lionsteel M5 in CPM 3V and the build quality is lightyears above everything i had so far. Absolutely symmetrical perfectly fine build quality! AND it’s CPM 3V! Also the Thick sturdy Sheath is very very well made and molle compatible. If you are looking for absolutely quality stuff made in Europe go Lionsteel
Returned my S1X for same issues. Emailed the owners a few times and they claimed the garbage was as intended even though the scales were like imported trash
Cos steel could have better edge stability than Elmax. I personaly like Steels that are more user friendly for field use and not the opposite that nowdays marketing push people to believe. I also like robust steels for my outdoors knives, and not the opposite, that again nowdays marketing tries to make people believe as true. PS It's not easy, needs knowledge a lot of experience and tools, but it's fun to create full convex blade geometries, out of saber flat or full flat grinds! 1st time I tried that out,was with a Handforged knife, whose maker did a perfect job on everything else, except the blade geometry, which was thick and uneven. I made very similar to a full convex Bark River Gunny. That knife came out one of my favorites to use, so after that, others followed too. I hate nowdays knives, because they come with decent blades, but really bad handle desings. Most of the times are very thin too, which makes things even worse. That's why I turned to Custom knives, that are also way better than any Factory made, or Semi-custom knife. Handforged ones, feel alive in your hands, while factory made ones, all feel like a dead piece of cold steel. It's difficult to go back from handmade, I also respect the efforts of the makers, which are huge literally. All handmade knives, are in my opinion value knives. No makers, is payed enough, for both his efforts and for the final product's performance cost of materials ratio.t's just my opinion. between thousands others!
@DTL Do you mean "reprofiling" with the RE? It all depends on the stones/method/experience Elmax and harder than that Super stainless steels, are some of the most difficult steels to reprofile. You need something like Shapton Glass stones to work on those steels that are both Super stainless and at around 62 hrc. Keeping Elmax sharp, is way easier though, using a ceramic rod, a leather strop etc works relatively fast as easy. Edge retention, if it's harder than 60 hrc it's impresive, if at around 60 hrc is still great, but my poor ballbearing steel knive's edges with the same hardness, last longer than Elmax, . Elmax is good for light and medium use, for hard use, you 'll get microchips on the edge at best, and you always risk to break the blade. It's suited better for a folding knife, rather than a fixed blade field use knife. (Don't believe what you see on TH-cam, it's all marketing, they all sell something and they all make money,)
@DTL Everything you said, is 100% true! AEB-L, 14c28n, both steels are stainless and are like improved 80crv2, with same toughness but better edge stability (no chips on the edge at all) they both hold their edges a bit longer too, without losing any sharpness, like the Carbon steels do when they sit in the sheath or in the drawer. Any harder steels than that and the edge will take chips at some point, no matter how tough or advertised the steel is. Also.Any Sandvik steel from Sweden (Uddeholm), any steel from Austria (Böhler) that are now united in one company called (Böhler Uddeholm), any steel that comes from them, is better than any others. That's why you hear all the time, the words Elmax, M390, Sandvik steels etc etc Their technology is 3d Generation Power Metallurgy, when their counterparts from USA like CPM steels and Carpenter, make only Generation 1 and Generation 2 steels. Sweden was always the country with the best steel for knives in the world and Austria are also very famous, their Glock guns, are some of the best out there too!
@DTL Pleasure was mine! You don't meet logical people easily these days. Steel isn't the most important on a knife. It's all marketing. Heat treatment, blade geometry, even sheath it self, are more important. Without a proper safe sheath, you won't carry it, so it's useless no matter what's the steel it was made of... Steel becomes more important, mostly on the application. For example, dive or fishing knives etc. Have a nice evening! Take care

Have a great day!
@@PerfectImperfections65 Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. Very helpful
Thanks for info👍 greetings from🇵🇱
Great job guys! Thank you for the fun and hard work you put into making your videos.
Thank you for your kind words!
@@DutchBushcraftKnives Have you guys done a video on the Cold Steel Recon Scout?

I Just bought one of these ist literally my first quality knife
Its a great performing knife but I do wish there were replacement scales avail out there. Mines are getting warped and torn up from two years of use.
Do fermented shark next!
Was literally minutes from buying a CoS S1X, saw the F1 Elmax option, checked for videos on it… and now this made me stutter… Do we know if the S1X have any plans for upgrades?
[edit] just ordered it. The F1X Elmax.
[edit] just got it. Damn this is a fine knife. It's almost hard to comprehend how such a thick bulky blade can be so extremely sharp. I also think it's the sharpest I've ever received out of the box, and I own a few thin Spydercos and Benchmade folders...
Benchmade and spdrk are crap.
I want to see this and the Apocalypse by TRC go head to head.
That is two totally different knives my friend. The only thing they have in common is the steel. It would be better in my opinion to compare it to the TRC K-1s. That is a similarly sized knife.
my Sanrenmu 1006 had a 95 factory grind. and i am not the only one.
I was really curious about this knife. But I am getting to the point where it is getting harder to justify buying more knives. But I will do anyway and it will be all the fault of you guys. I hope you're proud of yourselves!
What music being played starting at 10:34 ? Love this channel. Really test knives with no bias. Just on their own merits. Thanks
Brilliant video guys. My PXL is Elmax and it's awesome. Can't wait for the F1x Elmax to hit the UK, I'll definitely be the first in the queue!!!
You need a Sweden/Finland Salty/Salmiak liquorice tour, and enjoy our knives too.
🎉🎉👏👏👏 you boys still got it! Super fun video! 🤓👍👍
Has anyone heard if there will be an S1X Elmax release?
tried some of those swedish licorice that some girl came to work with special made with even more salt on them... horrible expirence until you suck all the salt away then it actually very good
if they make an A1 Pro in Elmax it'll just be *chef's kiss*
also cool to see you guys still using the cold steel shovel!
What angle should you sharpen this knife at?
That was a great video. I've never really liked elmax until now. I think I'll start looking to get a knife in that steel. Thanks guys!!
Nice review guyz! Thx and keep up thé good work!
I was looking at buying a F1 pro with COS but then saw this video. So just ordered my F1 pro Elmax. Hope I made the right choice?
And how it is? The edge is good, not chipping?
Send my bloody two bottles of compound already! Ive got a unstropped F1 CoS lying around here! SAAAVE MEEE DBK BOOYZ
Why is the elmax version as thick and HEAVY as the *laminated* cos? Drives me nuts
By the time Mikkie ran away with the liqourice i had forgotten it was a knife video.
Just ordered one off the back of this! I wonder what stones are going to work best with the elmax...
Guys are so enjoyable to watch
loved this one
I still don't have any Fallknivens. Maybe one day I will get to try one out.
Great episode guys, keep them coming 👍👍
For the record I have been trying to buy said DBK Compound "that everyone can buy" for about a year. So when I heard that in this video I went straight to the store and I have yet again been excluded from the "everybody" segment of people......
Good video as always 👌
Can you make a fallkniven F1X cos vs F1X Elmax? Edge retention, easy of sharpening, strength 💪 etc ??
Show us the pros and cons from this too steels.
Please 🙏
Another top notch video guys! Would of loved that Rockstead but congrats to the winners! Mikkie give the man a coin!
Love the video. You guys are on top form! 10/10
Very cool present
You have to add a few different things to the resin to make it glue. I'm pretty sure poop is one of the ingredients.
Hah
The liqurice is good! Salt laktris!!!!!!
Take care
@@greekveteran2715 you are not saying anything about rolling...
It was the cos steel that chipped very fast in fallkniven.
So this one is not laminated? Just all Elmax?
Yep
I really want a pocket saw
Bahco folding saws are really cheap and great for the money.
