Starting the Caterpillar D6-C Bulldozer (Music no one appreciates included free!!!)

Here I am showing how I start our 1972 Cat D6C Bulldozer. This is a 45 year old tractor, and I wasn't given the operator's manual or service manual, so I don't have the official starting procedure. Just learning about the machine! We inherited it from my Grandpa. He also had a 1942 Caterpillar D7 cable blade that we sold to a museum.
I'm creating this video series to show my kids and cousins how to use the machines when I'm not available.
Note that I inadvertently edited out another step - checking the diesel fluid level. The tank and fill cap are located behind the operator's seat, and a dipstick is in place under the cap. It would be a shame to run out of fuel while working in the woods, and have to walk back to the barn and get a can of diesel and the tools to bleed the air out of the system!
This is a 1972 Cat D6C 10K series. Considered one of the best machines for logging here in the Pacific Northwest. Small enough to thread between trees, yet heavy and powerful enough to clear brush and skid big fir and cedar logs.

I can never get enough of these videos my sister is half owner of a construction company in Arizona they always just leave them behind once in a while I was in a 4 somewhere in Oklahoma and there was two Rogue Raiders rushing away just sitting there a dump truck as well a lot of old cold places leaving behind Aldan Pennsylvania there's tons of them in the woods it's frustrating but you have a good work made me laugh I loved it thanks

To add this music to your video is like adding sandpaper to my toilet paper.
Up until the time of this posting, the leading wildland firefighting Fire Department in California still used the 10K and 76A D6C as the majority of it’s frontline fire dozers. It’s kind of funny that, even tough this dozer is 40 plus years old, it isn’t “old” iron. The D6C will be purring along quietly when the equipment of today is in a plastic/steel scrap heap.

Yes, it is a great rig. One of my neighbors is a professional logger and has a D6C just like this one that he uses every day. Easy to transport in, easy to get through the forest, always starts, easy to find parts (we get the air and oil filters at NAPA), and fun to skin besides.

Left steering clutch has issues, evidenced by the difference positions from the levers and pedals. The engine is a 3306 of which I have built hundreds and adore the sound. I transitioned in to the age of electronic engines, but the old mechanicals were so much fun to tweak power out of. Can still do that with the electronic engines, just need to know how to tease an ECM. Music was great, btw.

They are hard on the ass on even moderately level terrain. In the winter anyway. Drove one once and hauled two. Made for a smooth ride once on the trailer.. Pulled them with an old MAc 237 maxadine 5 direct. Like driving a pick up with an elephant on the back.
Yep, and this one needs the seat reupholstered too. The pile of rags and carpet scraps I sit on is getting compressed. Fortunately, I rarely work it a full 8 hours a day! Another item on the To-Do list!

When checking the oil the dipstick should not be tipped up, remove it vertically and read it so excess runs to the bottom not upwards to give false readings, common mistake many make.

Never liked the balance on 6-C or 6-D, go over a tiny bump and it feels like you're falling off a mountain and the blade is too slow to do much about it. The 6-E was like a giant flat-track 5, but a nice toy in residential developments. We kept a 6-R around but for larger jobs usually rented a 8-T or similar.

Why would you pull the dipstick out wipe it off then put it back in to check the oil on something that's been sitting there....I can see if the motor had been running but after just a few mins even then the oil will be the same if you pull it out fifty times or none....just saying
