    I am a member of Antique Caterpillars Machinery Owners Club (ACMOC) . You have a very nice find. Come on over and ask questions on the Forms. There are all kinds of manuals for members.
    the reason I stopped by was to explain how to shut down the pony motor.
    DO NOT use the mag switch. The way is to turn off the gas and let the pony motor run out of gas. All the service manuals say it is because of the downdraft carburetor style of the era. The gas in the carburetor float bowl (due to rough riding and excessive vibration) will flow into the pony motor crankcase diluting the oil causing the pony motor to seize. The Horizontal 10hp pony motor only uses 5/8 qt. so just a little gas can destroy a pony motor in short order. Also if the gas is left on in some cases a full tank of gas can siphon itself into the pony motor crankcase.
    One time use.😱
    Hope to see you on the Forms at ACMOC. Some of us ol' timers sell hard to find parts too.
    THANKS for the video and your time.

    I have a 1958 D6 9U, nice old cat. I built my runway with it. When you were shifting the transmission, if it's grinding, reduce throttle, and push the clutch lever ahead to stop the clutch from spinning. I've used my foot on the lever. Also, shift it fast, and it wont get a chance to start spinning and grinding. Wish I had more work for mine, it's a lot of fun to play with. Jim

    He finally found 1. gear!

  • @Ekatjam
    @Ekatjam ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The easiest way to load a dozer on wet wooden ramps or just steel, is to be in the lowest gear possible at the lowest speed. Also critical is the position of the blade which should be as low to the deck as possible. The blade acts as a counterweight to the ass end of the machine

    • @AntiqueCarsRCool
      @AntiqueCarsRCool  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ekatjam, you are correct. But at that time, the hand clutch needed adjustment, and the shifter needed to be gone through. We could not get it in the lowest gear at first. Then on our successful run, we were able to shift it in. On top of this, one of the steering clutches was frozen, so it took a couple of tries to line it up properly. AND the tracks need to be tightened, so it had a tendency to walk off to one side. The bulldozer was headed to the scrapper if we didn't get it out of there, so we just did what was absolutely necessary to load it. Thanks for your input!

    The older Cats are tough and where built to last. The operator truely didn't have much exprience. Some of the comments where very right. When I start a Cat I look for the main engine valve float lever. Open the lever and turn over the main engine till oil pressure and fuel pressure are in the green. Then close valve float and start engine. Also if you push the main clutch lever forward if it has been sitting long time I would push it with my foot. It will stop the transmission and let you shift without ruining a gearbox. Great old Cats I learned to operate on a cable blade 9U. Such great memories of my Dad and I skidding logs together.

    • @AntiqueCarsRCool
      @AntiqueCarsRCool  ปีที่แล้ว

      We're learning. He's a great operator, just never had run a machine with a hand clutch... he actually figured out how to start it without any instruction. AND, one of the steering clutches was frozen. This was a hustled situation to save it from the scrapper. To those posting negative comments, all of you who know your way around the old machines were not born with that knowledge. You had to learn. You had to grind gears and mess up before you got it right. No one in this video got hurt, and the bulldozer ended up on and off the trailer without an issue. The multiple attempts were because it could only turn one way and we had to figure out low gear. Cheers.

      @AntiqueCarsRCool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the suggestion, Amos! Yes, I agree... this was a situation where we needed to get it moved or it would have been scrapped, so we just got it running enough to get it on the trailer. But we are looking forward to getting it fine tuned and running like new again!

    Probly ought t o put a little tension on the trax. You need to spin the engine with the pony f or a bit. It warms the intake, as well as provides oil pressure before it lights off. If not, the rod bearings won't last long.

    • @AntiqueCarsRCool
      @AntiqueCarsRCool  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jason! I’m so glad you enjoyed. Amazing how quiet that diesel engine is once you shut the pony motor off, isn’t it? This machine was built in a time that a ROPS canopy was not a requirement. However, a canopy could be ordered for it. Many operators working in logging or other environments at high risk of falling debris would order a special roof, or build their own. If you look up Cat bulldozer, or any brand in the 50s or prior, you’ll see many that do have a roll cage of sorts. It just wasn’t standard equipment without paying extra. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned buddy!

    A good worker once the problems are adjusted out of existance. D6 will get a lot of work done quickly. Quite a neat model that particular example with the name proudly displayed on it everywhere. Always drivetrain and very rarely an engine in these earlier builds. Unless it's that petrol motor.

      The pony starter engine is petrol. The main engine that the machine operates on is diesel

    The older cats must have been alot more reliable as most of the newer ones I've run are quite unpredictable and overloaded with finicky electronics ! I've even seen brand a brand new 973 engine blow up during it's second day of use , I'd rather have a komatsu any day especially if I was somewhere where access to parts was a issue like a remote property!
