My grandpa used to have to deal with this once in a while. Back in the 1950's and 1960's he used to freight with cats and sleighs through the bush in northern Canada. Once in a while they would drop a cat (D4) through the ice. They would recover it and then build a bit of a tarp shelter over it so they could drain and repair everything before getting it going again. Shitty work, but at least no electronics to worry about.

😂😂😂😂 these savages turned this 580 into scrap because they didn't know what they were doing. For example, the fuel tank is where the loader arm attaches, too. The crack under normal use. After what they did, it's destroyed an not worth fixing.

Wash, drain, fluids, filters, fuel, reassemble. The major gamble are always electronics, but a machine this old probably doesn't have many complicated boards on it. The transmission may be an issue, but as long as there isn't catastrophic damage things should be fine.

Fair bit of work ahead of him, but I bet dollars to doughnuts it can get going again so long as the controls are all just manual hydro valves, just need to make sure not to frag the hydro pump when they go to start it
(though it may be a backhoe only for awhile as unfucking the bucket mounts could be a PITA if they are bent/broke)

About 4 years ago I completed my work on a Older Case 480CK Construction King Project with extend-a-hoe loader. Circa 1967-1973 I believe was when they were selling new.
I see this as a good possibility to return it to working order!!!
I wish I could help! ASE Mechanic once upon a long time ago, but now it’s just a hobby and I got great satisfaction from repairing it and saving it from the scape yard. They don’t even make machines this good anymore.
    I was a U.S. Army Heavy Construction Equipment Repairer. 20 years and 4 MOS’s Later I’m retired!
I wish it was in my Yard !
The folks who owned the machine offered it to me but I couldn’t afford it and because their old Man was heading to a Dementia Care home, I couldn’t take it! They were able to sell it for at least close to what it cost brand new back then and it was worth much more in use than sitting around for someone else. Rebuilt 5 Hydraulic cylinders and replaced the old Hydraulic pump (which was made by Cessna ) the back hoe control Stack of Valves was all that really needed more attention. Or even full replacement of the entire Valve stack. Old machines work better than the new ones, and are much easier to work on.
Final thoughts it reminds me of recovering a D7 E from a swampy mosquito infested muck hole down in Honduras in February of 1989 😂… hydraulics line crossover blew from the bull blade main lift cylinder, it was in 4 feet of muck I waded into the muck 4” of water on top and a solid 1/2” of 10 weight oil on top had to remove the grill to get to the line and pull it out plug both sides get some oil back into the the HYD system (with the down angle it was still short of full from the filler neck with the top of the Reservoir, being at such an angle, trapped a big pocket of air inside the hydraulic tank. Then we had to lift the ball blade and use two more bulldozers to pull it out. Only then could work on it on flat dry ground at least flat and when it wasn’t raining every afternoon, Parts never made it in before I left Camp castle.

20:39 This is why my brother, doesn't want to loan his 580 Super K. The investment is high enough, without rookies blowing hoses, busting parts. I was on a Ford backhoe, and I wasn't told that neither it, or the bulldozer, had any brakes. Apparently they like to steer with the brakes, instead of the torque converters. They were just too cheap to fix the Ford. I tried to lower the bucket quickly, but it was too late, for the bus. Being informed, having experience, and maintaining equipment, is a safety thing. The 580D, looks like a lot of work, and even more money. I'd pull the injectors ASAP, as well as blow each cylinder out. Hope nothing is bent or cracked. Wish him luck with it. The processing plant, had left the keys in the ignition on a semi tractor. I needed to pull a tanker, so I pulled out into the dark yard, they removed the lights already, the sanitation crew was wandering in, and Bill came running, jumped up on the tank, and screamed, "No brakes!", could've pulled the keys, or left a note, just saying.

First job, pull out the injectors and scope the bores to see what is or isn't in the engine block. Pointless dropping fluids and doing anything else if the cylinders are corroded.

Why? I got a backhoe for free that spent a winter in a lake after falling in the ice. It runs like a champ.

The backhoe is junk it's going to cost way to much money to fix it

I'm no expert but i would have wrapped that big rope around the rear tire\axle and got it upright ASAP. Then put the chain around the pivot\swivel point on the backhoe and drug it out of there. so what if it tipped over. you've got the power to probably lift it and not drag it.. but get a bigger or 2nd chain. At the 5:30 mark.. it broke free, proving my idea to just pull from the siad and upright it.. then pull it out of the water. 8:47 mark.. Wrong. You already pulled on it and almost turned it on it's roof. What a huge mistake to be yanking on the backhoe.. It's an EXPENSIVE part to be messing with. ALWAYS from the frame or AXLES. Then you let a guy with less time on it behind the controls. Sheesh.. Pulling with the side swing is NOT where the excavator get it's DIGGING power from.. Get it pointed straight and GENTLY lift and pull and I'll say it again.. NOT FROM THE BACKHOE.. Use the rope and make a cradle from the rear axle.. It's funny that part of the video extracting it was cut out or not shown. Looks like it did stay upright.
