      I didn't see it as him Torturing Chidi, more so just trying to teach him. Chidi's major sin was indecision. The trolley problem is more so a paradox designed to question what is ethical in psychology. By changing the story/people in the situation the person would make a different choice. Such as choice between a brick wall killing everyone on board including yourself or switching tracks killing people of equal number.

      @@nikushim6665 Oh he was definitely torturing Chidi, as it explains later on. But he did. learn from this experience, something I hadn't realized before. Michael was inadvertently teaching Chidi how to make decisions. He knew that Chidi was terrible at making decisions so he used it to "torture" him

    @NickJohnCoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    I’m actually on Michael’s side here. I really hate theoretical conundrums because you can construct any theoretical situation in whichever way you want to get whatever result you want and saying “there’s no right answer” utterly invalidates asking the question in the first place to me. Real people have made real decisions in such a way and putting up hypotheticals has a very intellectually snobbish mindset to me.

    • @adriauna08
      @adriauna08 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I personally don’t think it invalidates the question but it opens a discussion to explore the different concepts regarding morality and understand why people make certain choices over others.
      Sometimes there’s no need for a “right answer” the question and problem is still valid/ valuable without a definite answer

    • @PhantomJavelin
      @PhantomJavelin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      If it comes off as snobbish to you, then people have definitely not been exposing these hypotheticals to you properly. Chidi's explanation of "no right answer" is very evocative of how Chidi thinks. Because from a different perspective, there is no wrong answer.
      It's 100% metaphor, an absurd situation in a controlled environment where you have to disregard all sorts of context and variables to get the intended result. There's "no right answer" because it's not even really a question. It's a thought experiment that applies tangible objects to abstract concepts for the sake of better explaining them.
      Decisions are subjective. While any decision you make on the trolley problem is not "wrong," it exactly as "right" as the other answer, and it is up to you to make your priorities.
      The importance of application does not inherently invalidate conjecture as a topic of debate.

      There's a branch of ethics called applied ethics where people do reason through particular concrete situations. Theoretical conundrums are just to clarify the ethical issues in a hypothetical controlled setting, like doing tests in a lab before you roll out drug trials on actual people or learning how to do geometry before you try to use it to create a building.

      @@Delinae I'd say I'd far more enjoy that than any other school of thought, at least it's attempting to tie the process to a practical application.

      The whole point is that in moral philosophy, there is no "right" or "wrong" answer because nothing is ever completely right or wrong, there are merits and downsides to all possible answers. In this scenario if you decide to switch the track, it's right in that you save 5 people who would have died without your intervention, but it's wrong in that your actions have caused the death of another person who would have survived had you done nothing. The point of the question is to get people to discuss why they think the right of taking that action outweighs the wrong.

    the answer is very simple, if you pull the lever, you are a murderer. your logic in this video is difficult to watch, and contradicts itself constantly.
    if you pull the lever, you have decided to take life into your own hands, and the law agrees with this. if you intervene and pull the lever, you killed someone. if you do nothing, fate takes its course. the people who are in the way of the track die, like they were meant to by being in front of the track.
    we did this in my college class at penn state and everyone but me voted to pull the lever to shift the train onto the 1 person (killing them) and not just sit there and let it kill the 3
    remember that the trolley problem is not “choose who to kill: 3 people or 1 person” like most people think. the trolley problem is “the train is heading along a track, and you can choose to intervene to shift the train to another track.”
    the trolley problem will try to throw you off of this principle by adding in things like “if you pull the lever you kill 1 fat person (or a convicted felon etc).” but no matter how the test tries to persuade you, you can’t give in.
    the people in the way of the track are not your responsibility, and every decision outside of refusing to pull the lever is a decision that you made about who deserves to live and who deserves to die. you can’t make that decision, so don’t pull the lever. you are only a murderer if you pull the lever. you are always innocent if you refuse to pull the lever, or refuse to push someone from the bridge. even the person who rightfully shoves the evil person off the bridge is a murderer. this is also how the trolly problem would likely turn out in real life. we subconsciously understand that the people in the way of the track have it coming, the person on the other track, or the bridge, is “innocent.” you are not a train conductor or responsible for any of this in any way. you are a witness
    do not pull the lever or you will go to jail, as you should. good luck using this trolley problem logic in court to a jury. you will be inevitably convicted

    • @Michael-dy2lb
      @Michael-dy2lb 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We're not talking about legality. We're talking about morality. Those are two very different things.
      If you're in a position to flip a switch and you choose not to, you've made a choice. Acting like you're above the problem, choosing not to be involved, you're still making a choice. You choice is just a cop out.
      You say the right to do is to never pull the lever even if you know the one person on the other track is fat or a felon or Adolf Hitler. But what if you know the people on the main track? What if it's your whole family? What if it's a bunch of school kids? Would you still say "never pull the lever"?
      Finally, in the highly unlikely event something like this happens, I seriously doubt you'd even be charged with a crime, let alone convicted. There's simply no intent. You're in a situation you didn't want to be in and your actions ahead of time couldn't have reasonably avoided the situation. The potential victims were not in danger because of anything you did ahead of time. You're trying to help, but your options are all bad. It's just that one (5 dead) is worse than the other (1 dead), so you choose the less bad option. Like I said, you're not going to be charged.

    • @The_Youtube_Winner
      @The_Youtube_Winner 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Michael-dy2lb there is a point when acting becomes more optimal, but that takes a while. for the scenarios given in the original problem, it is still morally and legally best to never pull the lever.
      i disagree that refusing to pull the lever to be a choice. remember: the track is not a Y shape where the two lanes must be decided and you must pull the lever. something predetermined is about to happen and you must decide to pull the lever to *change the reality.*
      you have no moral or legal obligation to pull the lever as a random person like yourself, just as you have no moral or legal obligation to stop a robbery that is happening right now in india. you cannot make a decision based on extraneous details like age or criminal history.
      if you pull the lever, you murdered someone. in the unlikely event this happens in real life, you would be charged with negligence or manslaughter because you are not a train conductor and pulling a lever could have made things worse. depending on how decent your lawyer is, it would be incredibly difficult to convince a jury that you, a random person, sized up a situation (people about to be hit by a train for messing around on a train track) and people who were safe working maintenance on another train thought that you would save the most people and pull the lever. (i gave that realistic scenario because that would be a reason why one person would foolishly be in front of a train track and someone else who wasn’t going to be hit would also be on a train track). if you walk away, you can live knowing you didn’t kill anyone.
      think about it like this, what mentally holds more weight long term? pulling the lever to kill someone on another track in an effort to save people? or not pulling the lever and watching people get hit by a train. you could watch people get hit by a train and not have trauma, but pulling a lever to kill any number of people? this moral weight you feel is from your conscience. it knows that the correct decision is inaction
