Making a cheap Grizzly drill press motor start and run better (Part 1)

  • In this video, I show my process for adding a Supco Solid State 3-in-1 relay to an electric motor. The drill press is underpowered with this motor as it came from Grizzly and can barely start on a cold day. One solution is to add this Supco relay and convert the motor from Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) to a Capacitor Start / Capacitor Run (CSCR) motor. Then, they start!
    This is part 1. I now need to physically connect the wires, remount the motor and fabricate some sort of bracket for the relay. In the next video (Part 2), I will have the motor running.
    And, as a test, I will leave enough wire to get an Amp meter on the Start lead from the Supco device to see if the Supco feeds a small amount of run current into the start winding. On my last video, that was debated.
