In this Symphony of Destruction guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play Megadeth's biggest hit note-for-note.
In the first lesson I will break down all of the rhythm guitar parts, with the second video covering Marty Friedman's very challenging guitar solo.
We will be using standard tuning just like the original recording.
When in comes to the rhythm guitar parts for "Symphony of Destruction", these riffs are some of the easiest you will find for a Megadeth song. Davie Mustaine is really great at creating complex metal riffs, but he really tones it down for "Symphony of Destruction" to great affect!
There are some riffs in the rhythm guitar work that the band harmonizes a lot live. I have included some of those guitar harmonies if you are interested in playing them.
The difficulty level ramps up quite a bit in the second video in which I will show you note-for-note how to play Marty Friedman's guitar solo.
As I mention in the video lesson, Marty Friedman has a knack of creating highly melodic, unorthodox and extremely challenging guitar solos. His solo for "Symphony Of Destruction" is no different.
There are sections of this solo where I will show you the exact way to pick the licks in order to get them up to speed. There is a lot of economy picking being used which is essential to getting those parts up to speed. If you want to investigate this technique further I suggest you check out my complete Economy Picking Course guitarlessons365.com/premium-...
I will break each section of the solo down phrase-by-phrase to make it easier to memorize quickly. This solo is quite the challenge so good luck with it! #symphonyofdestructionguitarlesson #megadeth #guitarcovers

Marty Friedman’s picking style is so unique. Sounds like he’s sweeping when he’s up picking arpeggios. Respect to pulling this cover off so cleanly.

Dat accidental delicious pinch harmonic!
Oh yeah!
Best TH-camr On TH-cam WTF? HAHA! That made me laugh.
Pretty sure he did ''dat '' on purpose
Great breakdown. I covered this song many times live, works everytime in the third set. Never bothered to sit down and actually learn the solo. I guess you could say I faked it. I copped the intro and just winged the rest. Here's the thing...no one ever called me on it...not once. Those are choice licks. I learned something. Thanks. :)
Yeah man - I do that with Slash’s Nightrain outro solo. The shreddy part right at the end I just fast improv in A pento scale an no one batters and eyelid. 👍
@@ashthegreat1 so does buckethead :)
MORE MEGADETH
Sure thing!
yessss
Holy wars
@@GuitarLessons365SongLessonscan you do killing is my bussiness?
Carl: impossible to play
Carl: plays it
This solo is great will take you out of your comfort zone, thanks for the tutorial
Don't understand those haters who straight dislike as the vid is posted ...
Thanks for the video tho Carl !
Well thanks man. :)
Mad skills? Are you trolling? So many crap in single solo.
Parminder Benipal, maybe because he isn’t playing it with the same feel that Marty does.
Getting that feel is difficult for some guitarists.
Just watch Chris Zoupa’s tutorial on it & you will HEAR the difference.
Chris plays it more like Marty did.
It's really good, he is a good teacher, but the "hate" might be because he is playing it incorrectly. It's a reasonable facsimile, but not quite what Marty played/wrote. I agree no need for any bad comments, but I can see dislikes.
@@GuitarLessons365SongLessons we love you man, haters will always hate even themselfs. thank you for your lessonsyou are great teacher.
Dude, congrats on 400k! You totally deserve it, your lessons are the most correct and easiest to understand on youtube. I think more than 80% of the songs I know I've learned from you. Keep on rocking!
Thanks for the kind message and for following my lessons vidiac!
Most versatile guitar teacher....I'm damn sure he can play everything from 17th century to now...please try some Alter Bridge....You will definitely enjoy their music. thanx
Thanks Aditya! In fact, I have a lot of classical stuff on the way! I enjoy the old music. :) Will definitely look into some Alter Bridge.
Wow I’ve been trying to figure out that bit when it first starts going fast with the economy picking for weeks... you explained it and broke it down so easily! Thanks so much for this!
Your channel had exactly 400,000 subscribers when I started the video - congratulations!!!! The lesson itself is great as always :-)
Yes quite the milestone for me. Thanks for the kind comment.
Hey Carl I just want to say thanks for the good details that you put on this guitar lesson, I learned the song very quick. Thanks man and rock on with new guitar lessons.
Carl. Your vids are perfect for a medium skilled guitarist like me. Just the right pace. Thank you!
Thanks for this video, Carl! I'm so glad you show how this very technical solo is done! Thanks again!
Thank you very much Carl! You inspire me to learn these solos.
Unbelievable Carl, no matter what cool rock or heavy song, you have a great exercise with right notes and correct style. I like your videos very much, greetings from Austria
Can you please do Crystal Mountain by Death?
Great lesson. To play this cleanly at "Marty" speed is quite the challenge, even for the veteran player. Still working on it.
thanks for this lesson; your videos (tornado of souls; symphony of destruction; holy wars) helped me played the solos better...
Thank you again and again Carl for another great lesson! 🎸
Did you master this dude?
Thank you so much helping to learn this masterpiece of a solo!!!
you're absolutely amazing. great demeanor, great attitude and the best part is you're a great teacher... i learned it within a couple hours following your video.... #fromBangladesh
This is awesome Carl. Thanks a lot for all that you do. It would also be cool to see a lesson on parabol/parabola by tool
Yes definitely gotta do more Tool!
Hey what's up Carl. My brother I just felt compelled to tell you that you really are a fantastic teacher. We are all better guitar players by having found you. Thanks homey!
Great video as usual! Keep up the great content!
Hey Carl ,thank you so much for these lessons ,they're therapeutic!
I was wondering if you could look at an old April Wine song "Roller" the solo seems some what of a handful
Very good tutorial. Thank you!
Great! Another super clear video and not 60 min long. Thank you.
Awesome lesson as always! keep up the good work!
Thanks a bunch!
Great job! Keep the awesome videos coming!
Great lesson as always, you should do more Pantera songs, Dime is a legend
#GuitarLessons365Song thanks for all ur hardword for making this lesson we appreciate it
It makes it all worth it when you guys watch it and comment. :)
Thanks Carl, I love hearing myself playing this classic.
marty and his hirajoshi scales is a damn eargasm
Sick solo of Marty Friedman! Thanks Carl
As megadeth was my reason I started playing guitar 3 months back, I would really like to play this solo. I'll see if I can tackle any part of it, thanks for the lesson!
Tackling this solo at 3 months would be a miracle. good Luck!
GuitarLessons365Song lmao
Can you play it now?
awesome bro, keep it coming, rock on!!
Congrats on 400K subscribers Carl
Really good lesson thanks!!🙌
Thank you I really enjoy and relate to your style
Perfect!
You made my dream become reality.
Love your lesson Bro. Watching it from Bangladesh and Practicing it. I am big fan of Megadeath. Now I am big fan of your lessons too.
Everybody like "do this! do that Carl!" How about "learn this, than ask for that?" or "Thanks!" These solos are a pain in the ass to learn but it´s a thread of musical information and skill that´s just mad. All those 80´s 90´s kilos of coke and heroin and litters of beer where put to some good use in the end :P
Lol EPIC comment very true u got thrash metal
Another awesome lesson! You're really banging these lessons out! Everytime I get the itch to learn other bands songs, I'm finding myself looking to see if you've done a lesson. I don't think I've seen you do a lesson on "call of Ktulu" ...If you ever get the itch to do that, I would definitely check that out!!!
Yeah as soon as I have a entire week at my disposal to transcribe I will certainly do that. Haha. That thing is loooonnnggg
Hey man, I wouldn't mind if you broke it down in 3 or 4 videos lol Its an amazing song, its up there on my favorite Metallica songs list. So eerie and powerful sounding. No lyrics needed, the music tells the story. I always ask others and myself, "How in the hell did they write all these amazing songs??" Its just unreal how many amazing songs they have....and they're still going strong!
Thanks for great video man!
Thanks carl....this solo is not that easy to play.. But you teach it so well.... I finally got all the parts done... Now I just gotta work on playing it fast.. Thank you so much...
Thank you sir, for all your efforts to teach us...God bless u..
Amazing dude 🤯🙏😎
this is great man
Thanks Sam! It was a lot of work but always worth it in the end. :)
thanks, this video is awesome. 🎸🎸
Great Lesson! Could you do a lesson for In My Darkest Hour please? Thanks for all the help over the past 2 years of playing guitar \m/
Okay so I was doing pretty well until the "unison bend" at 2:11
I can't get a clear sound off the b, seems my finger on the g is cutting off the sound because I can't curve it enough to get two clean notes let alone achieve the bend at the same time
Any tips/exercises anyone knows of to help with this?
Edit: Kinda getting it, bend included... you gotta be super precise, guess it'll just be muscle memory over time
If anyone is reading this with the same problem, essentially what I did was I sat up straighter, and then placed my finger on the b string note first, got it clean then added the g note on top of that as routinely as possible, found this really small sweet spot where the notes both ring out even with the bend applied
I think it was a little misleading for me as you always get told to keep you wrist low to extend you reach across the fretboard, but in this instance to have both the form for note clarity & the strength to perform the bend accurately I found bringing my wrist up and thumb slipping over the top of the board to provide a better result, kinda hard to transition to, hence thoughts about about muscle memory
Now I just need to practice as it's very easy for this position to slip when applying the bend and then you don't get clear notes & also to make the muscle memory to easily jump the position from this first little movement
Good luck!
Damn thanks! definitely gonna donate more to you on patreon soon! I can't donate so much because I'm still in school, but you deserve it man!
Thanks man, I really appreciate the support! You rock!
Best guitar lesson EVER!!!!
Unreal great lessons thanks Carl
Thank you Conrad! I appreciate the support!
Thankyou so much sir for the lesson it had help me alot
More Megadeth
Love you man!!!
Hi... thanks for all the lessons. These are really helpful. Would appreciate it if you kindly let me know, what app/software you use to separate the guitar track from the song and what app/software you use to find out notes from that guitar track? Thanks in advance for letting me know.
Thanks Carl for another lesson I'll learn it and be awesome just like you 😊
Looking forward to that David!
Thank you so much Master.
I will be watching these quite a few times
yeah! Between you and my teacher will have me rocking this solo in a couple of months/years lol
Hey Carl, thanks for the lesson =) I’m having some trouble playing the notes to make them sound as fluid as you do when I play the solo up to speed. It just doesn’t sound as it should but all the notes are accurate, is there anything I can do to help it sound like your playing xD Thanks
Awesome lesson !
I am 61, and you taught me the lead to s.o.d. always got some fast kid to do that shot, but none available. this is now on the list. thanks, and keep it up.
Gonna be playing the song live and decided to watch this video I’m learning the solo using all down picking if way easier then the random alt picking
good lesson mate
Great lesson! Thanks
Thanks for watching Rafael!
I had a lot of trouble figuring out the timing for that first shred section. A metronome would help a lot with placing the strange groupings and denominations Marty Friedman uses in his phrasing. Great walkthrough nonetheless, thank you.
Great solo great lesson. I just think the g major descending arpeggio are a bit different following the chord shape in a descending 4 notes pattern.
Man I have been trying to learn this solo for 2 years straight. No joke I spent 2 whole years straight up practicing this solo over and over again. My father memorized the starting lick because I played it so much. And to this day I never got it up to speed. Most I could manage was 100 and past that was straight up gibberish. I give up.
top man!
Great thank you, it helped me a lot as the official tab book isn't the best to read.
Great solo, great lesson
Yeah he has lots of great solos IMO. Thanks for watching!
Hi Carl do you think you could do some tutorials on some anthrax songs? i find spitz' style quite hard to learn and would love if if you could do a vid showing how to play his solos
Which songs are you thinking of Hugh?
madhouse would be great, caught in a mosh or efilnikufesin are fun, maybe somthing new like breathing lightning.
Do the "a tout le monde"
We all waiting for that.
Thank you..thank you so very much
hey, is there any chance you could do a lesson on 'whats on my mind" - Kansas. I can't find any lessons and it would be really helpful, thanks for all the great work keep it up man!
hmmm I am not familiar with that one. I will check it out on spotify.
Soldier of fortune pls :) btw your tutorials are the best you show us exactly how they play it.
Thanks Eren. I definitely need more Deep Purple on this channel. Soldier of Fortune would definitely be at the top of that list.
Could you do a regular and instrumental lesson on Brandy by Looking Glass?
man your spot on
God bless you sir
Can you try and teach beast and the harlot some time in the future please?
You rock!
Hey there. How are you? Great video by the way, but pls can you do tutorial with Count down to Extinction?... Thank you. Cheers!
Can you do : à tout le monde by magadeth
Would love ANY older 1970's Brian May/QUEEN like March Of The Black Queen or The Ogre Battle or 1970's Judas Priest such as Tyrant, Stained Class, Sinner or Beyond The Realms Of Death ... Thanks and you Rock.
Please do Tornado of Souls by Megadeth! Awesome video, keep up the good work! ;-)
Coming soon!
thanks carl! i appreciate it!
Thanks for watching Lucas!
Hey Carl i've been watching ur videos for a long time and you helped me with inumerous solos... i was wondering if you could the Mechanix solo tutorial, im having trouble with it... Would be very helpful!!! Thanks
I have a few on my to-do list for me to get to first from Megadeth (tornado of souls, a tout le monde etc). But I will definitely check that one out as well. :)
GuitarLessons365Song Thanks a lot!!!! Really, im sure you'll have no prob with mechanix as your legato is smooth as hell, no worries
Is this a good song to practice sweep picking with? Ive been playing for 2 years but so far my play is good
Yeahh thanks carl,Now i can play this solo after 6 month practicing ,except for the last part ,still very difficult for me in normal speed
6months of practicing the solo or 6months of playing guitar?
Thanks for this great lesson (and tons of other great lessons) Mr. Brown! I just picked up a New (lightly used) #Jackson #KingV so this song is next on my list to tackle the solo on. Already learned the rhythm from your other lesson. Keep up the #awesome work! \m| |m/
can you do a lesson for 'the kids aren't alright' by the offspring
good pefect thank you
I appreciate the support... :)
Thanks man
Thanks for checking out the vid Hydra!
Torndado of Souls pls?
Should be my next Megadeth lesson
2:29 the bend should be on the third fret, bending up to the 4th.
Quick question: do you learn all of your song by ear?
great
If you have a look at the official Countdown To Extinction tab book it's played a little different by Marty. Little easier as he didn't do so many wide stretches.
Marty doesn’t play it like the TAB book
You're the man 👍
Thanks Liam!
I have exams. so wont watch it full. but still liked it. you deserve it.
Thanks for the support!
