Here is an update on the motherboard situation. I was bench testing again last night. I left it plugged in on the test bench overnight. I was busy doing something else in my office and I heard a huge bang. The motherboard took out the PSU I had on the test bench. Very disappointed. I wont be powering the board up again. I'm just hoping it didn't take the GPU and CPU with it.
the psu only blows of resonance or overpower/overcurrent , and if it didn´t trip the protection for over current on the psu , that means it was a mix of both or the that psu had issues in the protect part, it over heat and the caps or pwm controller on the psu blow up
Nick, have you ever heard of Mainboard Medic? He's a TH-camr that fixes motherboards. I think it would be awesome if you sent the board to him to see if he is able to fix that motherboard. This is just crazy enough to work.......
Well seems like a good idea to avoid that MSI ITX motherboard....... *edit: I've been using the JGINYUE Night Devil ITX motherboard which I bought for around $140 from aliexpress. So far its working fine. Only that I get weird stuttering when I activate MSI afterburner. Which could be due to the fault of other components. But its definitely not the fault of the SSD. Which ran MSI afterburner without stutters when I transfer it to another system.....
I bought that same MSI board brand new last year and kept having issues with it shorting out on boot. It worked fine outside of the Dan A4-H2O case, but as soon as I installed it wouldnt even boot half the time.
Please do a video on your tv setup, I'm actually looking into building a pc for my tv and also wanna match it to my PS5. Maybe you'll have suggestions that I haven't even thought about.
What I like about your build videos is that we seem to balance aesthetics and practicality in a similar way. I just wish I could afford the same components xD
I have the same exact MSI Motherboard and didn't have similar issues, and is working fine for almost a year now. Godspeed to you as I enjoy watching your PC builds.
I've only read about B650I MSI Edge motherboards having problems. Avoided the risk and went with another board without problems (ASRock B650I Lightning Wifi). Used the same Ridge case (with the fixed riser). That motherboard model seems to be really cursed.
I built my hardline, water-cooled PC using this same mobo one year ago. Sure enough, my first one was defective. However, the replacement has been an absolute champ. Seems the risk vs reward for this might be a bit much.
Budget-wise, I settled with a Minisforum BD790i SE and paired up with a deshrouded and undervolted PNY RTX 4090. It's so much more efficient and cooler running compared to an undervolted EVGA 3080 Ti that was cooking itself inside the case. LOVE IT.
I’m definitely interested in how you got all that hdmi switch set up happening becuase I am running into the issues with too many consoles, only a few hdmi ports
I used MSI boards before, Z77 and Z170, after 8 months out of warranty, they all started to fail. Z77 - Randomly forget the BIOS setting, following by boot loops, to completely unable to get POST. It powers, but nothing, no beeps too. Z170 - 1 RAM slot begins to fail, followed by another RAM slot. Since I have 4 RAM, 2 Kits, 1 stick per kit is affected. Randomly forget BIOS settings. Unable to use any PCIE slots for dGPU. Stuck on splash screen. They all completely dead and gone after another 6 months. I stayed away from MSI board after that, I don't even do OCing.
I have that board - no issues to date. Nr200p max, 7800x3d, gskill ram, cooler master sfx, 4070TiS. Noctua fans. System been stable for 6 months or so.
Tough break on those MSI boards. Sometimes there are lemons out there. AM5 really does need some better itx options. Right now I have the Asrock B650E itx and it has been solid. The only issue is no bios flashback so in my case when I purchased it the bios was so old none of the x3d CPUs were supported. I had to pick up a 7600x , flash to the latest bios, and then install the 9800x3d that's in it now. Runs great! I'm hoping we see an Asrock Nova x870 itx board like the one they released for Arrowlake that no one is buying right now.
So GPU doesn't have any kind of fan detection feature? I thought if you take a fan of the GPU you need a resistor to imitate the fan and keep the GPU happy. I learned something new today.
The GPU doesn't care about whether fans are plugged in or not. Same as if you put a water block on a GPU. As long as its cool it will function just fine :)
I love it when a plan ... falls apart. 🤣🤣🤣. I really like the aesthetic you have going on with this, and too right I want to see what the overall tv gaming set-up looks like and how it all goes together. Hopefully three will be the charm with that mobo and it isn't more than a minor hiccough for MSI. The shroud/riser cable business was really thinking inside the box!
My B650I Edge has been working fine for almost a year now. In the past month I've had to reset BIOS twice. Once for no reason that I could find, and once because apparently it didn't like what I did to it using Ryzen Master. Other than that, I've had no issues with it.
I had one of these motherboards, I bought it maybe 6 months after it came out. It shipped with a day 1 bios which didn’t work with Hynix A die and the cmos battery was dead flat. MSI sent me out a new one was a bit of a pain to change it (it’s under the IO shield). Didn’t have too many issues with the board otherwise for basic use.
looks like I dodged a bullet with this motherboard lol, recently upgraded to AM5 with the 9800x3d and this is basically the only ITX board available. Umm'ed and Ahh'ed a bit and decided just to jump up to mATX instead. Using a much larger case now but looks like it was worth the pain in not using this board
i had memory problems with msi B650 mobos at the start of the AM5, i dont trust ASUS at all soo i cant comment on them, but Gigabyte and Asrock both solid and good build quality(over msi/asus) for B650 mobos
I have this board from new. Only issue is the bios battery I've replaced once already and will have to replace again. It's a known issue. I am building into another pc next week in another custom water cooled build. Will have a ryzen 7600x with a rtx 4070 to super. In a jonsbo i100 Pro case.
Ive always wanted to build in the terra. The only thing keeping me from it is that ive got a pc and its fine. I dont need another pc. Or a different case. I just want to build with it.
He is hitting the CMOS clear button accidentally. Had this many times on these motherboards. It resets the PCIe too. I have build 4 Fractal Terras with the MSI board. Also the CMOS batteries can run down. So just replace.
@GearSeekers Nick, have you ever heard of Mainboard Medic? He's a TH-camr that fixes motherboards. I think it would be awesome if you sent the board to him to see if he is able to fix that motherboard. This is just crazy enough to work.......
I read mixed reviews about this am5 itx board and many problems reported so it has to be something about the design or components used. Maybe cheaping our and capitalizing on the itx tax. I have great experiences with their am4 motherboards though 🤷♂️
Moral of the story: Follow SFF PC Building 101 and test the parts together _before_ putting them in the case. Edit: Also you are not the first person I know whose had problems with this board. You're not even the third.
I use that board. It's been mostly great. Only thing is I'm on a older BIOS As it has issues seeing gen4 Nvidia for some reason. It's google able and I haven't tried the newest bios. Other than that. It's been 2 yrs and 7800x3d runs great in it. I'm in the process of moving into a Dan A3 wood. But have a b650m gigabyte Ice for the white goodness. Nothing too bad to say about the msi

Brother eww....that's the worst Nick.
MSI RMA. Might be lucky this time.

Thanks for being considerate and editing out the dad noises after getting up, would hit too close to home.
I think you disrespected the MOBO gods by not installing that M.2 drive screw. LOL!
HAHAHAHA. It tried to smite me lol

Yes, show us that TV setup !, super interested in that HDMI switcher
What I like about your build videos is that we seem to balance aesthetics and practicality in a similar way. I just wish I could afford the same components xD
Ah but watching this Gear Seekers video absolutely went to plan for me.
I have the same exact MSI Motherboard and didn't have similar issues, and is working fine for almost a year now. Godspeed to you as I enjoy watching your PC builds.
I love that you had a screw driver in the shot but reached for the LTT screwdriver
Fractal gave customers a free new riser. Just contact their support with a copy of your invoice
I didn't buy the case.

@christenlanger My msi b650I motherboard has been fantastic in my ridge for six months. I guess I got lucky.
Yes, we do want to see your setup, please!!!
A lot of people commented on this dreaded mobo. Dead cmos, terrible boots, etc. We need a video from you for itx am5 boards pls!
It's coming soon. There are a bunch of new boards coming in the next month. We'll do a full roundup.
Ngl I'm liking this kind of build video more. Step by step, with simple and clear instructions, very chill.
I built my hardline, water-cooled PC using this same mobo one year ago. Sure enough, my first one was defective. However, the replacement has been an absolute champ. Seems the risk vs reward for this might be a bit much.
Also had problems with msi b650i edge and Ridge case. GPU led and no image displayed, unfortunately
ive def heard of many others having issues with that exact board.
Good to know!

I think I will definitely do a video about it then!
I had two, and both require the BIOS to be in CSM mode for the advanced settings to work. In UEFI mode, both are glitchy in the advanced settings tab.
I used MSI boards before, Z77 and Z170, after 8 months out of warranty, they all started to fail.
Z77 - Randomly forget the BIOS setting, following by boot loops, to completely unable to get POST. It powers, but nothing, no beeps too.

I like the oops all MSI builds, done quite a few lately. I can't remember the last time I used a Scythe cooler or fan, they were once a big deal.
What grinds my gears are the persons with nail extensions building PCs. One fk up inserting a CPU and bye bye mobo.
Would like the TV video
Looking good man....can definitely see the continued weight loss! Also, great video!
Would love to see the setup/tour of the tv unit. Been looking to set one up for our living room.
I have that board and no problem so far
"Away From The Case" All say it at ones 😉
For something like this I would use PTM7950 because that CPU is going to move all around when tightening those mounting screws.
Its fine :)
For ITX I continue to use Intel or AM4 boards because there are plenty of cheap, reliable options available.
I have that board - no issues to date. Nr200p max, 7800x3d, gskill ram, cooler master sfx, 4070TiS. Noctua fans.
System been stable for 6 months or so.

Let's see your TV gaming setup
Which side of the case is intake when it’s on its side?
Top side for CPU. Bottom for GPU
Great video.😊

I actually think the video turned out being truer to a genuine SFF PC experience. 😅
HAHAHAHA! I rarely have issues with this kind of stuff. I am a bit annoyed about it but this kind of stuff happens.
I had that one, but couldn't keep it cool. I don't understand under clocking. And really don't want to learn.
I bet that PS5 gets extra Toasty in there. can fry some eggs on it lol

I hate and love this case. Memory swap, gotta pull out the heatsink and undo part of the frame. But at least the foot print is decent.
Is their a pin missing or bent pin at the bottom left side of the socket?

What MSI motherboard model is it exactly? So we could avoid it
Avoid all MSI and Asus boards!
@@MauiWauiPineappleExpress i have two systems with an ATX and a mATX, both from msi. 3 years and no issues. i guess it is just luck then
What do you use the TV PC for? I know smart TVs are more prevalent these days. Im just curious of your use case.
Gaming
This is why we TEST all the components OUTSIDE the case before installing them.....
These components had all been used before. This is not my first rodeo buddy.
Ive always wanted to build in the terra. The only thing keeping me from it is that ive got a pc and its fine. I dont need another pc. Or a different case. I just want to build with it.

No because I wanted the PC to be white

I bench tested the board on the test bench and still dead. I spent about 4 hours after filming to try and figure it out.
Short circuit maybe? Did you use an anti-static matte while working on the board?
That does not explain how 2 of the exact same boards died in the same way being used 2 different ways.
@GearSeekers good point. Maybe those msi boards are cursed somehow. Def something they should investigate.
People still using msi boards in 2024 😂
I've had the same weird PC Building moments of frustrations over the years. Sometimes certain components don't play well together. :( I'm wondering if they fixed and sent back the same motherboard to you or didn't fix it at all?
We have an MSI service centre near to where we live. I walked in. They replaced it with a new one on the spot last time.
so u have a PC for TV gaming yet u bought a PissPoor 5 with no games and inferior performace? kinda of a L my guy
