Tuomas also stated that if Floor ever leaves the band that will be the end for NW. I saw a scrapbook that someone posted online of photos that were taken of Floor with some of her female friends in the metal world and it was quite impressive. As you probably know, Tarja is one of Floor's close friends as they have so much in common as performers and mothers with daughters. In interviews Floor gives Tarja equal credit with Tuomas as the co-creators of NW and the reason that the band rose to fame in the first place. But I think the difference as far as Floor's relationship with the band is that her arrival saved the band at a time when they were in a state of flux and struggling to find a new identity and in a way the band saved Floor who was suffering from burnout. So I think there is an appreciation and loyalty that goes both ways. Although Floor is frequently invited to perform as a guest artist with other bands and now she likes to experiment with other types of music she has always made it clear that Tuomas is the leader of NW and her #1 priority is the band.

Floor BECAME Nightwish immediately, we have no worries of there ever being another change there. Marko’s departure was HUGE and almost did the trick, yet they’ve moved on with a new touring (non-singing) bassist, and I believe that is due to the massive demand for their music that existed both before and even more so after Floor joined.

@@talkswithdave I was pleasantly surprised how excellent Troy has been in the male vocal role. There are some things that Marco did that I don't think Troy would necessarily even try, but it's like this band went from strength to strength. I don't know why I should be so surprised, as Troy is an incredibly accomplished musician, but it was so very pleasing.

Great reaction, this masterpiece is always overwhelming don't worry. It has a very important place in the Nightwish story. It was written by the keyboard player and primary songwriter and composer of Nightwish, Tuomas, it deals with his turmoil and depression after the band sacked their first singer Tarja Turunen. It is his artistic suicide channelled into a song, so he didn't have to do it in real life. There is a backstory therefore that some read before watching, some don't. Either method does not detract away from the quality of this composition. Keep the reactions coming, great work!

Great reaction Aileen. This song is a watershed moment for every Nightwish fan worth their salt. It is one of the most important songs in the band's history as it provided closure for Tuomas and the band after the Tarja era had come to an end. We can debate the merits of the Tarja vs Floor argument until the cows come home. What we can not debate is Tuomas' song-writting genious. Every note, every chord and every spoken word in this composition is meticulously planned and expertly executed. These are all world-class musicians at the top of their game. Personally speaking, this song gave confort and respite as I played it in my ipod on the helichopter ride back to base after each mission from god-foreshaken places in the Middle east or Sub-sahara africa or some Latin American jungle. Keep your Nightwish journey going. It is a hell of a ride.

it's a fine thing to see somebody gradually falling in love. Though it is not my genre I rate this band as one of the greatest at this moment. The production, the charisma, the individuals, the songs: the total package, I have to say it's totally something else. Can not believe that Floor Jansen is from the very tiny Dutchy Netherlands, as I'am too. Not forgetting the great singer/bassist on her right, but she is such a great performer, a real artist that can give you the chivers just like that. Keep up the good work and enjoy.

  • @stevehanson2398

Hey Aileen. Thank you so much for this fantastic reaction. This is a very emotional song and many of us get misty-eyed every time we listen to it.
I love how Tuomas borrowed imagery from "The Pit and The Pendulum", a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear.
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he was angry with God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I wonder whether Toumas's anguish was NOT due to the fact that he fired Tarja (the original singer) from the band but because he felt he was being publicly tortured and executed by his so-called fans for doing so.
I also want to say how beautiful you are and what a pleasure it is to see your gorgeous face light up with this reaction. Greetings from the UK

Pure, cold reactions to this masterpiece always impress the hell out of me. It proves how brilliant this composition is on a musical level and I love that. Research into the backstory will only increase the impact of the song, but a person still has to be able to feel the music in their soul before they can fully appreciate it on a deeper level. "....For years I've been strapped unto this altar
Now I only have three minutes and counting

“So happy...” while everyone from the bands checks on tuomas (and at that pause you say it is at where emppu is checking on tuomas) because this was a song where he did a metaphorical suicide instead of doing it irl... 😅
Yeah I agree the band is great and has a exemplary chemistry between them though. From floor which is glancing at tuomas from time to time throughout the song to check on him (she’s on mike and while she once in a wild travels with it she shouldn’t be doing that a lot imho) or Marko which came to check on him and of course I already said about emppu...kai can’t even glance though because some devil wrote him a piece of song that he needs to play 😈
(While I like the song I’m glad it’s off their stage playlist because of the influence it has on tuomas...sometimes he asks to turn off the earpiece for this song to not hear it...so for our Mozart’s mental health I’m glad they won’t be doing this live no more)
If you’ll listen again from the part in the song it says 3 minutes and counting after 3 minutes you hear the sound of the guillotine...tuomas’s suicide so to speak.
The last verse is very emotional. Annette when she sang this part once broke live on stage because it was right after she lost the custody of her children to her ex (and even before that she told in interviews that as a mother it’s the hardest part for her sing emotionally)and floor as well said in an interview that this verse is hard on her emotionally... 🥺...I just like that angelic voice (and every time tear up)
“End of all hope” or maybe “shudder before the beautiful” next? both are show openers (end is traja era which floor preformed live in 2018 and shudder was the first album written for floor’s voice and the opener for the shows...) or maybe something heavy...maybe “slaying the dreamer“? After this song I think you’d like one of those more upbeat songs...

This is a very powerful song, it is one of the songs specifically written about the way Tuomas felt after they had felt they had to sack Tarja, it affected the rest of the band deeply, hence "The shoulder cries more" Emppu and Marco both check up on Tuomas during this performance, also Tuomas had the vocals removed from his in-ears, though you often see him singing along anyway, even Kai is seen holding back his feelings after the suicide. Floor just gave so much of herself to this performance. If you want to hear another version which has all the anger and pain I suggest listening to Marco's demo version that hits even harder

As a extreme music guitarist I wanted her to get just how broad metal is, not just sex, drugs, violence, death, etc... Nothing wrong with melody or harmony. Now she's turning me on to new stuff like Babymetal. So metal CAN bring parents and kids together and share love of music. Hey do some Babymetal. Keep it up

    Aileen
Did you noticed when bassist, Marko and guitarist, Emppu walked over to Tuomas, keyboardist for comfort and moral support as Floor singing at the end of this song. As you read other comments of Tuomas' situation with original singer, Tarja. Tuomas and Tarja were or are childhood friends in Finland. In 2005, she either left or fired from Nightwish. Fans of the band blamed him for her leaving the band. it gotten so bad that he put Nightwish on hiatus for 2 years. Then Nightwish gotten back together in 2007 with a new singer, Anette Olzon. Anette sang with NW from 2007 to 2012 or to 2013. She left the band. Then Nightwish hired Floor Jansen as a touring vocalist for an upcoming tour (Ghost Love Score). Floor had to learn complete Night wish songs in 48 hours. When that tour ended, Floor and Troy, multi-instrumentalist became full time members of Nightwish.

I don't know if you've checked it out yet or not, but I recommend listen to some Annette Olzen era Nightwish songs. She was the original singer for this song, and that was her voice during the very beginning of the song, and the monologue in the middle.
She's very different from Tarja and Floor, unlike those two she isn't a classically trained singer, but a contemporary vocalist. Imaginaerum is probably my favourite album by Nightwish

To further highlight the genius of Tuomas (the keyboardist and main songwriter of the band), from the moment the choir boy says "now I have but 3 minutes and counting" and the moment Tuomas slices his throat on stage with his fingers, marking his virtual suicide, exactly 3 minutes have passed. He is called the Metal Mozart for a reason :)

Toumas is a musical genius. An example the child saying he has 3 minutes to live and 3 minutes exactly later you see slice him slice his throats in a symbolic gesture of suicide . The man is again a genius.
