And thank you!!! You explained this better than anyone else has!!
Not a problem!
This was great mate, nice and quick, helpful answer. Thank you!
Glad we could help, Em!
I also need my air ducts cleaned after construction and during construction I had a leak so there is some mold in the ducts. Do I do this before new insulation?
Yes, we recommend getting any mold taken care of before insulation
Great to the point answer. Just get rid of the old insulation.. Possibly silly questions.. almost a 50 year old condo...
1) How do I know if i need to replace insulation in my attic?
2) I see some very small black granules all over three attic, not sure what they are.. definitely not mould neither did i see any rodents.
3) Where do I get rid of the old insulation.. just at the city garbage location?
Hey Rahul! These are definitely not silly questions. If the insulation has never been replaced, it definitely should be. If you feel you are losing a lot of air and that the insulation is no longer doing it's job, it may be time to replace it. As far as the granules, it could be vermiculite. This should be tested and handled by an experienced contractor. If the insulation does not test positive for vermiculite, you can look at local ordinances for removal locations. If it does, an experienced contractor will do the removal for you and make sure it is disposed of properly. I hope this helps!
@@RetroFoamofMichigangreat.. thanks a bunch!!!
No problem!
If my insulation was new but my wall got rained on such I get the insulation out? Would it cause termites to come in my home?
If there is significant water damage to your walls, you would want to take care of that before adding injection foam insulation. Under normal circumstances, wall insulation doesn't need to be removed for injection foam insulation.
Also, foam insulation isn't an inviting place for termites, but we always recommend any pest problem be taken care of before foam insulation is added.
My boss bought a new to us shop to move business into. He is remodeling it. He pulled me off a couple of jobs to come and tear down the tyveck and plastic covering the ceiling and push up the old bats into the 2x6 rafters so he could have a crew come in and spray over it. I tried to tell him he doesn’t understand it’s probably going to create future issues. A lot of this shit was moldy. He didn’t have a permit for any part of the remodel. I wore a mask. And sun glasses and just my work tee shirt and shorts. I’ve dealt with insulation a number of times before. But this shit was bad. I have now two infections in one eye but they aren’t bad. But be sure no matter what y’all do. Have the proper gear.
That sounds like a mess!
Hopefully, the infection clears up soon.
I had the underside of my roof spray foamed in the attic and they did not remove the old blown in fiber glass that's still on the ceiling. How much of an issue is that?
Great question! This is something we would never recommend. We always remove all of the insulation before install. Leaving the existing insulation can cause ventilation issues.
What kind of insulation is the best?
For existing homes, we recommend injection foam. For new builds, we recommend spray foam.
Good joke, that's the worst thing you could do, especially if your under a mortgage
Yes, I would want to see some help on how to go about removing the old insulation. Mine is partly blown and partly that batting type.
We go a little more in depth in that here: www.retrofoamofmichigan.com/blog/old-attic-insulation-removal
I would like to know about how to go about removing fiberglass insulation from within the wall cavity so I can replace with something more effective. Should I just cut off a strip of sheet rock around the room and pull the fiberglass out, replace the sheet rock and then inject whatever through holes?
With our injection foam you do not need to remove the insulation. Injection foam can go right in with it and will fill in any of the voids that the fiberglass is leaving behind.
@@RetroFoamofMichigan What if the fiberglass bats inside the walls are black (either by mold or dirt)?
Where do you dispose of the insulation?

Thanks, Eli! You're making me blush LOL
Hi! We have been trying to figure out a problem with some significant skin irritation in our house. We have been to numerous allergists but it does not appear to be an allergy curable w an anti hystamine. . A contractor mention that it could be that the insulation is leaking into the house causing the problem. Could this be the cause of the problem? If so how would we fixate problem...I guess have the old insolation removed? and equally as important how do we remove any fibers / irritants from the house. Thx!
Finding out for sure that the insulation is the problem would be your best option. I would hate to see you remove the insulation just to find out it was something else. If it was the insulation than I recommend removing it all, calling a professional may be your best option that way you aren't dealing with this yourself and making your reactions worse.
I hope you get this figured out soon! Stay safe!
I got demons in my crawlspace. Would new insulation get em out or do I need an exorcist?
Hey D K! We recommend an exorcist.
Fiberglass absorbs moister?!
Yes, it does.
Great Update! Can I talk to you. Thanks

Ghost and demons 😂
I removed all of the blown insulation from my attic. That is the worst garbage I have ever seen. Blown in insulation is absolutely horrible and ruins a home and makes an attic totally unusable and useless. It only attracts insects and rodents. Now my attic has been air sealed, batting put in and plywood put over that. It is absolutely beautiful and clean up there now. And I now have usable space up there now. And it is so much easer to inspect my attic and roof now. Get rid of your blown in insulation and don't put it back. Just get rid of it.
Glad to hear that, Eddie! Many choose the blown-in route for cost, but in the long run it is not the best choice for them.
