First Impression -Milwaukee 30° Paper Tape Framing Nailer
First impressions are important. The first time I picked up the 9.4 lb. nailer I thought it was heavy. The first time I fired a nail I thought WOW this is nailer is powerful, fast and loud!
We used this nailer on framing lumber, plywood and LVL material. It is able to easily sink nails in engineered lumber and can can fire up to 3 nails per second. That’s fast for cordless. The only other nailer that is that fast is the Metabo HPT nailer.
This nailer measures 13.3” w x 14.1” l and 4.7” wide. It was designed to fit between studs and joists. At 9.6 lbs [bare tool] the Milwaukee nailer is 1-lbs heavier than my Makita pneumatic nailer which has a magazine capacity for 2 nail strips.
    • Length 14.1"
    • Width 4.7"
    • Weight 9.4 lbs.
    • Height 13.3"
    Nail Capacity
The nailer accommodates nail sizes from 2” to 3-1/2” [clipped or full head nails] and comes with a magazine that holds one strip of nails, or an overall equivalent of 43 nails. That’s two nails shy of the 45 nail schedule for nailing plywood panels.
An optional Extended Capacity Magazine [48-08-2745] is available and will allow the nailer to accept two strips of nails, [93 nails] which I highly recommend if you’re doing any real framing. This accessory easily replaces the smaller magazine and is secured in place with 3- Allen screws.
    Loading Nails
The Milwaukee has a rear loading nail slot -the nails slide into the bottom of the magazine and then a press of the “pusher-release,” allows the slide mechanism to pass over the nails. There is a spring loaded tab to release the slide mechanism from the nails. Stripping nails and reloading different length nails, from framing to sheathing nails, was, easy and intuitive.
An anti-dry fire mechanism stops the tool with 4-5 nails remaining in the magazine.
    Firing Modes
This nailer has fire rate delivers a fire rate similar to pneumatic. It has two buttons. On / Off and a mode button that controls single-sequential and contact-bump fire selections. One nice feature of this nailer is the auto-off feature. The nailer once turned on will stay on for 60-minutes. This eliminates you having to turn it on every time you set it down for a few minutes.
    Tool Nose and Hook
As far as framing nailers go I’m a big fan of an aggressive nose tip spur-design. Why? Well when your firing huge pieces of metal you want to ensure that your nailer’s nose securely grips wood, at any angle, for controlled nail placement. No one want to mistakenly fire a nail across a jobsite. Been there done that - not fun! The Milwaukee nailers tip is not as aggressive as I’d like but I did not have any issues using it.
The Milwaukee has a ½” x 2.5” belt hook on the left side of the tool and a 2-1/4” x 3.5” deep rafter hook on the right side of the tool.
    Depth of Drive
The depth of drive dial is located on top of the tools nose and is a solid, knurled metal knob that is secured on a threaded rod with a c-clip. This is one of the best depth of drive adjustments I’ve seen. Its accessible from both sides of the tool, and is easily operated with or without gloves.
    How’d it work?
The Milwaukee framing nailer is fast. It has a strange sound when firing. When firing the nailer its fast and powerful, you can feel the power in this tool. It was able to keep up on bump fire mode easily.
    Runtime
On a XC5.0 Ah battery this nailer will fire approximately 700 nails. That’s about 16 sheets of subfloor or sheathing.
    Improvements
I’m impressed with this nailer but if I could improve anything it would be to reduce the weight and lessen the tools activation noise.
    Price
    The Milwaukee M18 FUEL™ 30° Framing Nailer sells as a kit for $ 450.00
The kit includes: (1) M18 XC5.0 Battery Pack, Charger and Contractor Bag. It sells as a bare tool (2745-20) for $ 350.00

    Hey Rob,
Thanks for your hard work. It would be good to see if you would make a video about how bad Milwaukee's quality and quality control have become. It is amazing to see how some tools are built to a decent standard whereby some tools as just garbage and are not up to a contractor standard. I have had multiple tool failures on almost new tools and some were even out of the box problems. Hope to see something in the near future.

I was in the same boat as you.
My Gen one Milwaukee 18g cordless nailer spent more time in the repair shop, than in my hand. So I was a little gun shy when it came time to purchase their framing nailer.
I went the Hitachi / Metabo HPT route instead.

I heard about this Milwaukee framing nailer about a year ago, & waited a WHILE, for it to arrive. I finally ordered the Hitachi / Metabo cordless version.
There are too many tools that I would like to buy right now. The tool addiction skit you guys did a while back, hit close to home. With every trip to the Depot or Lowe’s - my eyes wander.
Then I get an email from Tool Nut - with the Festool remodelers kit with close to a $500 savings. Then comes a text message from Klein, with the new vented, reversible, hard hat, & the rechargeable headlamp. (Do I need to replace mine?) Yes, in orange please. Summer is on the was, do you want to get the Full brim version as well? Yes, in white please.
Safety first, & being prepared is a time saver.
Where do I stop? How many nail guns do I need?
      One more please.

I'll end up getting the Milwaukee nailer, but not right now. I've got 3 pneumatic Bostitch guns, 2 in 21 degree and one in 28 degree. I keep o-ring kits and spare anvils if required, so I can repair just about anything that would break on a daily basis.
For me, one place I won't use cordless tools is on a roof. If I clip off my airline to my belt, the tool won't go ever the edge. You sit it down, and it WILL go over, no if's, ands or buts.

In a head to head a drop test would be awesome. It sucks to potentially ruin something, but framers do get dropped from heights (roofs) with no air hose to grab and slow it down a bit, and it does have a rafter hook so it's obviously intended for that use... Anyway, Weve waited so long I don't even care anymore and I bought another nailer instead. Almost a year late on this thing. I'll see how many problems people have the rest of the year before even thinking about it.

Ken’s Festool Channel - you have a valid point and it’s understandable esp. after Gen 1 fiasco. But If any cordless nailer lasts a few years - it’s worth it. Cordless tools have a lifespan of cycles. Tool companies won’t share that number but think like 1000,000 or 200,000 or XXX? nails before service or replacement.

Hello all, Just wanted to thank Concord Carpenter and let everyone know, if you decide to pull the trigger on one of these I can wholeheartedly recommend the link provided. I ordered yesterday from OHIO TOOL with reservations as I had not used them before. They offered free shipping as well as about 4 other quicker methods....I decided to just use the free shipping and roll the dice. Well about 10 minutes after ordering I received an email that the shipping label had been created and then the big surprise within an hour I had an actual tracking number and today I received notice that my tool would be here (Bethesda MD) on Saturday so order to door less than 36 hrs! Fantastic company....I will use them again!

Anecdotally, I’ve had several framing nailers spark for awhile when they are new then goes away, not sure why, metal on metal until it breaks in? Others have done it intermittently for years. It’s very common in framing nailers, and Ive had it happen in smaller nailers sometimes. Nothing to be concerned about, but wish I had a more definitive answer for you.

It works great but who wants to send in there tool every year. I know the milwaukee is a similar design. It will be interesting to see how long they last before needing to be sent in.

@@charlesf9065 I thought with any warranty, if it doesn't work it has to get fixed. But wear and tear on things is part of the owner's responsibility isn't it? Like wearing your tyres down, that's not a warranty repair. I've heard of others using both the hikoi and milwaukee framers having to have them topped up due to lots of use, at a service center at their own cost. But hey, if you don't get charged for it then good for you. That's great to hear.

Cordless nailers would work better than air driven in very cold work. Our framers have 10 air driven nailers and always have one or two in repair due to ice freezing in them in winter. Electric would eliminate that issue.

someone stole my packout from my truck that had my nailers in it in the home depot lot. I'm really trying to hold off until black friday to see if any deals come up. My nailers that were stolen were Paslode, which I never really had any issues with, considering I still have a few milwaukee batteries left and a handful of their cordless stuff in there (my gen 3 drill & impact was in the packout), i'm considering this setup. I've never used any of the milwaukee nailers whether it be the framer, brad or 15ga. Since you seemed to have used them for a while how are they holding up. Trying to do my research before i buy.
