I watched this video before the pulley replacement of my lathe. My pulley also did not slide into the bearing. It was close so instead of tapping with a hammer, I placed the pulley in my freezer for an hour. The pulley contracted enough that it slid in without the need of a hammer.
Great video. This is called a Reeves split pulley system and is used on a lot of lathes and some drill presses. I did the same and broke one of the pulleys trying to get it to slide. I barely tapped it with a rubber mallet and it shattered. Rather than get a new Reese pulley, I am going to replace the AC motor with a DC motor and an electronic speed controller.
@@Perspari It was a lot of work but worth the results. With a DC motor and a speed controller, you have infinite speed control. I also add a frequency counter so that I know the relative speed. I got all my stuff from Amazon but I understand that you can use the motor and controller off of an old treadmill. I left the Reeves pully in place at one setting. Good luck.
I have the Charnwood 813 lathe with the same speed control system. I found removing the pulleys challenging to say the least; where the rear pulley sldes, during work, it slides fairly easily but getting to the last inch, when taking it out, was very difficult, I used wooden wedges, rather than a screwdriver, to get the pulleys out and tapped them in with a hammer and wooden block. Its worth checking the splines on the speed control lever as mine were distorted and damaged. I liked your idea of the gear puller. It would have been nice to see you take out the spindle and the two bearings. Many thanks for a very useful video, which I wished I had seen before doing mine. James .
Thanks James for leaving a comment. I'm glad you got your lathe sorted out. Your suggestions will be useful to future viewers. If you feel so inclined, please subscribe to help the channel grow and good luck for all your future projects. Matthew.
Thanks for this very helpful video. There is very little info about this lathe on the internet, and your video has explained how to solve all the issues i have been having with mine, Many thanks!
Thanks for posting! The video is very helpfoul! I recently bought Nutool nwl900 which i think is the same thing. The motor pulley has been broken by preveous owner....Thanks a lot!
If you need a new pulley, Speed Selector makes variable speed pulleys that replace the Reeves, Hi-Lo, TB Woods and Lovejoy pulleys that went out of business or got bought. Most of the pulleys are in stock or Speed Selector will custom make if needed. They have an actual engineering department; very helpful.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I had a previous viewer who also said the NWL900 was the same model. I am glad i could help and good luck with any work or restoration or repair you undertake.
This will be very useful. I have a used draper wtl90, basically the same lathe. Someone had used a screwdriver to separate the motor pulleys! I now need to change main spindle bearings as it sounds awful.
Hi Gary, glad the video will be useful. Good luck with your repairs, please subscribe if you feel inclined to help the channel grow, and stay safe. Thank you for your comment.
Thank you. Very informative. Your lathe and it’s (Reeves) drive system is identical to the US Harbor Freight Central Machinery #34076. They are made in China and I think the dissimilarity in metals between the pulleys and shaft cause them to bond if not lubricant regularly. That’s what I have. I bought mine used and those pulleys had never been lubricating and the inner pulley was frozen to the shaft. I am having nightmares trying t free it so I can replace the pulleys and bearings. I don’t know about parts availability for yours, but they are hard to come by for mine. Can you get parts, specifically that top shaft for yours?
Thanks for the video. I wish that you ha shown or told us how you removed the bearings! I have a Mastercraft lathe in Canada which is essentially the same, and want to change the bearings.
Have to lubricate the shaft on my SIP lathe regularly which is exactly the same as yours. I think the noise you can hear is the reeves plates "timpaning"as the thin tapered ends of the plates contact with each other at fastest speed. Not sure if this can be cured. Happy turning. Ian.
Great Video, having trouble removing shaft to replace bearings, any recommendations? I have a Chinese knock off that is very similar set up. Trying to hammer out shaft and it will not move? Did you have issues? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
Good video. I have the Harbor Freight wood lathe that is similar. I wonder why the manufactures make the pulleys so flimsy and with poor quality metal?
Hello, great video. I have just been given a Nu tool NWL900 which looks like it's the same machine. Exactly the same problem - outer pulley stuck on, not going to come off intact , also taken a chunk out of the inner half pulley . Do you happen to know the diameter of the shaft please ? I don't mind paying that much if they are going to fit. thanks , Ed. It's alright , I figured it out from your bearing packets, 25mm.
+Edmund Slackbladder Hi Edmund, I am glad you figured out the shaft measurements. Thanks for leaving a comment too. I have not been following my youtube responses recently so sorry for not getting back to you more promptly. Many thanks, Matthew.
Hey thank you so much! I am currently repairing my Draper WTL90 which has the same pulley system. Mine also rattles at slow speed and my pulleys are snapped at rims. Could you send a link to where you bought your replacement pulleys and bearings please? So helpful your video!!
Thankyou...exactly the same as a Sealey SM 900 also...just wish they didn't make the pulley sheaves out of cheese. I dropped one when cleaning it and it smashed.
That's too bad. Yes, they are rubbish and need a manufacturers upgrade. Clearly the weak link in the design. Thank you for your comment, and please subscribe to help the channel grow.
Thanks for posting very clear and informative video. I’m currently considering purchasing one of these lathes all said and done would you recommend it. Thanks james
hi, its very hard to find any information on the sceppach lathes! i'm looking to replace the drive belt on my dms 1100 you wouldn't happen to know if its the same size drive belt as the 900?
+Emma Wheeler Hi Emma ! Thanks for my first comment on this video! As far as i know the 900 and 1100 designation refers to the lenght of the lathe bed. I believe the rest of the lathe including the motor and drive belt are the same. If you need a place online to buy the belt let me know, I replaced my belt after this video was made.
Hi Tony, thanks for your enquiry. I purchased the pulley through Scheppach it has been a while, but if memory serves there is a www.scheppach.com website and I called or emailed through that. The parts were ordered from Germany and took a few weeks to arrive. The bearings came from www.simplybearings.co.uk or Simply Bearings Ltd. I used a digital calliper to measure width, internal/external sizes. Hope this helps. Good luck!

how did that go? In a similar situation

@@christopherthorn1906 brilliant, thank you for the reply. Cheers
Brilliant video, thank you. I'm having trouble with mine & the kind people on the UK Workshop forum helpfully guided me here. I'll give it a go.
Hello Gareth, it's possible if you have the tools and follow along. Good luck and thank you for your comment.

did u lith grease the spindle before the new pulley mine was rusted shut and i broke it like you did every 4 yrs u have to relube this
I believe I did. I haven't used it in a while now, so it probably needs a lube and service before use. Thanks for your comment.
