That’s awesome! But I work all day long and everyone at my office already thinks I’m weird because half of the time I’m standing at my desk instead of sitting. I can’t paste up-and-down the hallway like a lunatic. I try to get the steps in where I can, but I’m sure they don’t add up to 10,000 steps a day.
I only have one hour when I get home to do a workout, am I supposed to go for an hour walk which is about 5 miles or do I get on the peloton? I cannot do 10,000 steps and do a 45 minute workout. I just do not have that time in my day or I will have to sacrifice sleep.

I'm a stay-at-home, homeschool Mom and I walk miles throughout the day. I try to get in at least 5 miles daily. I like to walk first thing in the morning after breakfast, after lunch, and after dinner. Due to financial changes I recently had to get a work-from-home job that requires me to be on the computer all day. Just in the last 2 weeks I've gained 2 lbs since I've not been able to walk as much. I'm still walking, but not usually 5 miles a day. Once I get through with my training I'm going to get a walking pad to fit under my stand-up desk. I'm thankful to still be a stay at home Mom and homeschool my boys bc of this job, but I need to be able to walk more for my health and sanity!

I do know you live in the US state of Washington, where drugs are legal, but I have to ask; 'just what have you been smoking?'. Here in the UK around 67% of adults are overweight or obese, while smoking is illegal in pubs, cafes, restaurants and all public buildings, anywhere in the UK, and most adults don't smoke (only about 17% do). But more than half are very overweight.
As for public transport, a lot of people I know would take a taxi to a bus stop rather than walk. The people of Europe may, as you say, be more healthy than people in the US, but here in the UK we are as unhealthy as most Americans are.

One point though, I'm in the UK and, of course, I don't know where you actually went during your visit, but I'd say that levels of obesity are increasing rapidly here. You just have to look around you in the supermarket. (Although I've never been to the USA so maybe obesity levels are just relative!) Also, smoking is actually fairly rare here now, although vaping is more common than smoking cigarettes. It is actually illegal to smoke in most buildings such as restaurants and other public places. Can't comment on France though.

I find it hard to not _accidentally_ walk something like 4k steps per day, though I almost always get over 10k. Still, I find that having a desk job creates a challenge of being continually active-and I think continual activity is _really_ the key. I do set my fitbit to give me reminders to move, but I cheat and get my steps at the top of the hour so I spend as much as 1:50 seated at a time. I should probably fix that.
You're right about "time of year." It's more difficult for me to get regular walks in the snowy months. I'll make sure I get steps for my "reminders to move" and at least one 30 minute walk a day, but I don't get regular walks of much more than 250 steps.
PS: I'm thinking about putting a pull-up bar in my office so I can take regular breaks doing that too, because I need to work on my rotator cuffs.

In the US it is more likely to be your diet that is causing the problems. In the UK most people are non-smokers and smoking is banned in communal spaces. You will not see ashtrays everywhere in fact you would be hard-pressed to find any in a public space/setting. I don't believe we walk more than anyone else in other countries but food regulations are much more stringent here. That's why I think your food is the issue. A very recent study by the British Heart Foundation suggests 5,000 steps per day is sufficient for health benefits. I do like your videos and really appreciate your efforts in keeping us informed.
