I remember asking a Tomcat driver once about the flat spin in the first Top Gun. He talked about the split throttles and how it was a real concern in the A version of the Tomcat due to the compressor stall issue, but later versions had less chance of compressor stall. He also mentioned that as a test pilot for the Tomcat platform, he actually has tried to force a flat spin and never could get it to quite happen without a very specific set of conditions, like Ward mentions here. He also did say that while it would be possible to get a little more yaw rate by using asymmetric thrust, he didn’t think it wouldn’t amount to much increase in maneuvering and has some risks that don’t outweigh the benefits. We had this conversation while I was hanging him from an engine hoist by his harness for his 360 inspection and also asking if his junk was getting pinched or his legs started to get tingly.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the fact that rooster actually has three kills now which exceeds Hangman’s total. One on the helicopter and then two as Mavericks RIO.
I've seen the movie 6 times now, each time I'm impressed with Cruises acting to give the character "Maverick" (the once talented loose cannon) the most realistic behavior and maturity for his age. Really love the acting Cruise did in this movie. The man is wearing a new demeanor that suits him. Very admirable here.
100% agree. Tom Cruise may be weird and his scientology and yelling at the crew about covid and such, but.... Actors are weird anyway- that's why they're actors. They have to "act" like people they aren't and when they are good at doing it, you don't realize they are acting. You don't just have "regular" people be great actors.... If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. Prove me wrong. Anyone that's bothered by Cruise's acting and lifestyle is just jealous.
@@stargazer2504 I'll admit: Of course I'm jealous of Cruise's financial position. But I don't think I'm jealous of his fame. Can't imagine what it is like being that famous and not being able to live like any other non-famous person. And I'm definitely not jealous of his complete and utter Delusion that is religion, or 'scientology' as it is in his case. That Delusion likely cost him his relationships with both Kidman and Katie Holmes. Not every actor that is this famous clings to a Delusion like Cruise. Brad Pitt doesn't. George Clooney doesn't. Ricky Gervais doesn't. Angelina Jolie doesn't. Kiera Knightley doesn't.
@@stargazer2504 I admit Cruise is a good actor, but I do have problems with the way Cruise shrills for $cientology, which is a corporation that harms people, harasses former members, and breaks up families.
Growling Sidewinder has done a ton of videos now with split throttles, one thing he does is leave one engine in full AB and pulls the other to mil power, so not to idle. And he is able to turn inside many more maneuverable aircraft as a result.
Yes - that was the comment I was looking for. GS didn't use idle/full AB though. I guess the filmaker wanted to have the audience notice the split throttle at all. (one engine lit)
I think for this video, Ward was simply showing how the split throttle doesn't work that quickly. Like what was shown in the movie. Still an awesome maneuver to see on the screen though
Yeah I thought about mentioning that he seemed to get more movement out of the plane not sure how different the scenarios were seemed like he was maybe going a little faster or Something along those lines

Like everybody else, I waited eagerly for this movie to be released. Listening to people such as yourself, Jello, Mover, etc. I followed their advice and just shut my brain off and enjoyed the film. As a comparison, I have been a railroader for over 30 years, and I simply cannot watch the movie "Unstoppable" without a little piece of my soul dying every time. I love your channel, keep swinging for the fences!
There is a fundamental flaw in the movie in that you can't blow up a huge stockpile of enriched uranium with out spreading nuclear waste all over the world, Chernobyl times a 100. So the entire mission of the movie would be scrapped and and Tom Cruise and the pilots wouldn't have anything to do but just stay at the Top Gun school. So yeah just turn of your brain and enjoy the movie.
I managed to watch it the second time - I walked out the first time ....... Its was just too much "copy paste" "do what we did in the first movie but try make it cooler" and "fan service". probably wont watch it again for 10 years or so...i rather stick with the original Top Gun

Thank you for sharing the knowledge and the way it is suppuse to work on a Tomcat. I always loved that plane since i was young and i will stay a Tomcat person for life.
Growling Sidewinder, a DCS youtuber did a video on the split throttle move dogfighting a Super Hornet and managed to get more maneuverability out of the Tomcat with it. Still, with you being an actual Tomcat aviator, I bow down to your expertise and experience, but perhaps do a comment on the feasibility of what he does in that video?
GS only pulled the throttle out of AB. I've done the same. You need to de moving pretty good, and just pull out of AB, which is actually shown in the movie. You also need to be mindful of how much you pull. She will pirouette around the nose. And you will loose a tremendous amount of air speed. I suspect they had a simulator that they worked this out in.
Thank you very much for your answer. As I said, with you actually having flown the real deal, you'd know better. In the heat of the moment of the movie, I also didn't notice the aileron popping out, which is clearly a mistake (mostly basing myself off simulator games I've played over the years), so the move, as you said, was played clearly for spectacle's sake.
I’ve greatly enjoyed your channel. Thank you for your work, and for your service. As for TG Maverick, I saw the original in my grandfather’s movie theatre when I was 6. The first thing I did when I got home from the movie is try the split throttle maneuver in DCS. It was high AoA and I spun out. Next I tried the no flaps takeoff. In the movie I was saying in my head "drop the flaps Mav!" The Tomcat really does want to lift off the ground no matter what because that wingspan is so damn big. But he could have saved the nose gear. In the end, it is of course a movie, and meant to entertain. But they really did their homework with this one. It was the best jetfighter movie I have ever seen, including the original. Hell, I was happy enough when Rooster had to "connect ground air supply" lol. Great debrief Mooch!
Few years back, was delivering a sofa set to a house on an RAF base, after we finished, parked up has TACO break was required for driving hours, heard a huge roar - had the absolute pleasure to watch two F-15's fly by, had to of been 100-150 feet from the deck. Amazing to watch. Would love to be in the back seat of those. F-14,15, 18, 22 would be a dream to sit in those aircraft and let the pilot ''go nuts''.

I'm amazed at the difference in the cockpit video between DCS and the old 2F95 simulator video system! What a difference a few decades of technology makes!
Maybe because Goose was killed by an F-14 asymetrical thrust, flat spin, Maverick spent 30 years working on how to avoid it. He became so good at it that he can cause it and recover from it at will. Can you show us in DCS what it would take to cause a controlled or at least recoverable asymmetrical thrust, flat spin on an F-14.
Without being in a TF-30 equipped A or very early pre-conversion B? You actually have to put in the work to upset the old girl and make her go into a flat.
@@MrNoobed True rather than the Dark star scene. I woupd rather have had a flash back of Maverick with a test F/A-18 or even F-22, practicing asymetrical thrust control. Great breakdown Ward! That movie was so fun even with a little poetic license. I think it was more realistic looking to my untrained eye that the first one.
Thank you again sir for the video. I did one westpac with VQ-1 , attached to CVW - 11 , USS Enterprise in 1982. VFs 114 & 213 were there and I to me they were the coolest squadrons on the boat .
That isn't a good argument, you can make a movie accurate to real life without sacrificing the movie going experience. Stuff like the no flap takeoff don't affect the movie, but add realism.
My wife looked at me during the movie, I just laughed. I am just an AE2 Corsair maintainer that was a troubleshooter. Growling Sidewinder does some split throttle things with the Tomcat on his channel I believe he mentioned that it was only 25% I watch it out of entertainment value.

You didn't kill my buzz for the movie either so thanks for that. You went Rain Man in the analysis. But that's coming from a guy who is full Rain Man in my job, so no criticism. I loved it.
Thanks so much for the breakdown. Cringeworthy or not, it's interesting to hear what may or may not be able to happen in real life. I truly appreciate all of your time and I'm always looking forward to the next video. Thank you again Mr Carroll
Ward, Thanks for the breakdown. As a former F4-D (USAF) Phantom Phixer I too laughed at some of the cringeworthy flight envelopes. It does make good "Hollywood" though. I've only seen the movie once, however when starting the Tomcat in the enemy hanger, they only seem to start ONE engine with the Dash 60 (USAF engine starter) so did I miss something or does the Tomcat have the ability to "bleed air" to start the second engine? Some of the scenes remind me of DACT (Dissimilar Air Combat Training) missions we had with NATO forces during joint exercises at Decimomannu Italy. Keep the chalk talks coming.
The fact they paid that much attention to some of the details and got as much right as they did, shows the respect and passion by the crew. It's been all to common in recent years to simply rely on callbacks and pure CGI to power through a hastily written plot or poor direction. Purely to squeeze money out of an aging IP. This movie was never going to get everything right, no successful movie ever does. It has to carefully balance immersive realism, with fast paced action and tightly written characters to appease the vast majority of an audience. Which was absolutely the case here. For the minority of people decrying every little detail, I want to put this into perspective a bit. The original Top Gun was very Cringe worthy outside of a few scenes, but it had such an 80's attitude no one cared. It was also one of the few movies to centerpiece the world's most powerful but elegant aircraft, the F-14. For the time it also showed an amazing amount of actual in flight footage. All of these combined into a cheesy but appreciable action movie, that made you want to go out and paint an American Flag on your face. Fast forward to Top Gun Maverick. We have even more actual in flight footage. With CGI being used on the scenes with obviously unobtainable aircraft. And to spruce up certain scenes that couldn't be done fully for safety reasons. IE, the low flying F-18 pass through the canyon. We have arguably a better set of character arcs than the original had. We have some actual attention to real dogfighting tactics. Overall the number of cringeworthy moments is reduced significantly, and are usually not noticeable outside of very knowledgeable people. It is a true sequel working off the shoulders of what the original created. Expanding it further and making a better product overall. That still makes you want to go get your face painted with the stars and stripes. Overall this movie should be recognized as a great action movie, easily one of the best movies of 2022. I understand the need for some people to nitpick every detail, because yea it does pull you out of the immersion. Watching John Wick multiple times I continually notice small things that make me go "Wait, that's not right". However I must respect the amount of passion and dedication it took to make it so good in the first place. As an aside, this is not a critique of Ward or this video. I just see random hate for the movie based off this stuff and I have to shake my head at how demanding some people are.

@@MMuraseofSandvich it’s very possible that they didn’t have a wingman because the SU-57 is incredibly new and probably only 20-30 have been produced. As to why he took Mac to the deck I don’t know, could be pilot incompetence or underestimating his opponent. Or just a bad pilot.
@@pewpew3377 if I'm remembering the movie right, most of the enemy A/C were destroyed on the ground by the cruise missle strike. Those three Felons were probably the only ones left, and Mav and Rooster splashed two of them on the way out, leaving only one to attempt a last ditch intercept as they make a break for the carrier.

Thing is, I can imagine someone pulling off the "ambush" on an enemy aircraft foolish enough to get that close to a "bogey"(I hope to have gotten that right) but there's no way the "Felons" lost that dogfight. And I think the last "Felon" would have killed Maverick and Rooster with a BVR shot and that would be the end of it. Even though it is utter BS, It was a badass scene the likes of which are very unlikely to be filmed again.

Heard a pilot say "You never want to fly an 'A' model anything!"
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the fact that rooster actually has three kills now which exceeds Hangman’s total. One on the helicopter and then two as Mavericks RIO.
True!
Reminds me, I hear the highest ranking ace of Vietnam was a F-4 backseater with 6 confirmed kills.
@@jeffholloway7974 yup, willy d driscoll. excellent speaker, the stories of those kills and his shoot down are fascinating
Willie only has five, Chuck DeBellvue of the USAF has 6, and another backseater, Feinstein also has 5.
Good point.
I only it wasn't for Xenu...

I buy tickets to see a best 3 out of 5 between Ward and GS.
@@420BulletSponge I would definitely be down for that! lol

I was in high school when the first Top Gun came out. It's not why I joined the military (US Army) but I had glasses so I knew I would never be a pilot. This is nostalgic content for me. Makes me misty.
Still, as movies go. This was the best one made in a long time. Thanks, Ward
Agreed. Almost all films require the "suspension of disbelief" to enjoy. I always wondered if pilots had that issue with "The Final Countdown", "Top Gun" and the other military aircraft centric films.
From the interviews I've seen, most of them enjoy the films (in the moment) and then talk about the cringe parts afterward.

As a fan of this channel now I have "compressor stall", "asymmetric thrust", "vectoring", "weapons solution" burned into my memry. Love it!! The more nerdy the videos, the better. Keep up the good work Mr. Carrol
Also pretty cool that what Rooster did to prep the aircraft was an actual thing, and not just for dramatic purposes.
This, I wanted to bring this up but checked if someone did already.
I’ve seen GW’s episode. (And he’s great.) I’m coming at it from a completely different, fleet-experienced angle.

Great stuff. Hope to see more DCS content from you too. Your enthusiasm is infectious!
Very fun episode, Ward! Thank you.

I bet they meant to do this more explicitly but decided it was too awkward to write into the movie.
@@MrNoobed True rather than the Dark star scene. I woupd rather have had a flash back of Maverick with a test F/A-18 or even F-22, practicing asymetrical thrust control.
He could be testing a new weapon or a new engine and at the end of each test he would always "cut one engine off" and attempt to recover. He eventually gets into trouble for doing it over and over again and just as he's about to gets his wings clipped, the admiral receives word that he's being called back to TopGun

Love the chalk talk videos Ward - one of my favorites is the BVR tactics one you did. Was informative/excellent.

Biggest cringe in the movie for me: Rooster: "Why are the wings coming out Mav?"
Awesome breakdown man, thanks for being so specific with your corrections, love it.
Weaving in that sweet DCS footage!! Love it!!
Side question - have you successfully completed an AAR yet??
Great breakdown, Mooch! Another point that I noticed is that the final Felon's radar would have notified the pilot of Hangman closing in and locking in on him and he would've taken evasive maneuvers.
That and it's unlikely there would be a lone bandit except for dramatic writing. There's a reason why wingmen exist.
Also, on the deck, making a head-on pass. Like wouldn't you keep your distance and throw a Fox-3 at the Tomcat?
@@MMuraseofSandvich it’s very possible that they didn’t have a wingman because the SU-57 is incredibly new and probably only 20-30 have been produced. As to why he took Mac to the deck I don’t know, could be pilot incompetence or underestimating his opponent. Or just a bad pilot.
@@pewpew3377 The best official guess is fewer than 10, quite possibly just 5.
@@pewpew3377 if I'm remembering the movie right, most of the enemy A/C were destroyed on the ground by the cruise missle strike.
