- There was a recent news piece about Florida children with disabilities being placed in nursing homes :( What a horrible situation! We don't want that for any child. Parents and self advocates must know their rights, and they must apply for the Waiver in order to help make a difference. In this video, we take you through the application process step by step, which could be SUPER TRICKY otherwise, and why many people just give up.
Don't give up, you can do it!
Thank you this was so helpful. 🙏😃
It would e wonderful if this was accurate. I did all this BEFORE my son was 5. We included 3 Ieps, slp notes, an md ASD diagnosis, and then Apd decided to send my son out for testing as they still questioned with mountains of paperwork. So he got an asd 3 aka severe, diagnosis. Apd said they did not recognize Dr. Zacky’s report, he was the dr. APD sent me to. Also the waiver program representative in Florida (Palm beach) told me that there is a 13 year wait list. My son was denied the waitlist and I was going to appeal but became so depressed by the actions of APD tho the point that I became physically sick and it was impossible for me to appeal as I couldn’t handle any more stress from this… this is our experience/our reality. Apd also changed from ASD to ASD 3 and must meet *every criteria In the legislation, however even if you provide notes on this from MDs you can be denied. This is our reality. I hope this can be an educational for you to understand our reality.
Very helpful information, thank you for making this video because a lot of people are not familiar with this program or the process.
It is the best and most helpful video I have seen in TH-cam. Very lucky to find this video ❤😊
Trying to apply for my children great information
Once approved for APD program and crisis waiver enrollment, if you don't mind sharing, how did you go about selecting a Waiver Support Coordinator and who do you recommend in the Southeast region?
Could you please link the website in the description box??? My son has Spina Bifida and we are having a hard time with this. ❤
Is applying for APD the same as applying for Medicaid waiver? Or is this two different applications?
This is all new for me, and I hope this helps. In my own experience, once my child was approved for apd program, additional information was submitted and sent for crisis review. Once I received a letter stating he was determined to meet crisis criteria and that recommendation has been made for enrollment, now I have to select a waiver support coordinator to manage my childs needs.
These are my current steps and can provide an update as I continue with the process.
Does my adult son needs to have medicaid ?
He got accepted for crisis but when I applied he had medicade now he has Medicare only .
Is that an issue?
I have paperwork to choose coordinator
My sister has an acquired brain injury as of two years ago and she is 41. The APD excludes her to my understanding because she doesn’t have a developmental disability she was born with…. So how can I get her services at a group home if she does not have a born with disability?
She has Medicaid already.
Why is there a waitlist at all? What is the issue?
Also, if I’m already on a waiver program in another state will I have to wait?
