    To quote Jurassic Park: "You cant just supress sixty-five million years of primal evolution"
    We've only been technologically advanced for 200'ish years, and medieval for 2000'ish.
    There's a good reason we get so affected by this "primitive" stuff, it's still deep in the core of our brains, and it'll stay there for another million years largely unchanged. We're the same flesh and blood as these ancient people.

    I have been waiting for someone to discover and react to Heilung. They categorize their music as amplified history and sing in a mixture of old Norse, ancient Germanic and Latin so you feel the music rather than worry about lyrics. Their name translated means healing and when they perform they call it a healing ritual, not a concert. Alfadhirhaiti is from their first album which was based in the masculine. The chanting in Alfahhirhaiti is all the names for Odin, the highest Norse god. They released Futha last year which pays tribute to the feminine and if you seek out one of their interviews, Maria Franz reveals what Futha translated means. I can't type it here, but it is definitely female! A great follow up to this is their live performance of Traust. th-cam.com/video/i_uiI5LAlYI/w-d-xo.html Edited to say because of this, you got another subscriber!

    In this musical theme, they first invoke Geri and Freki, the two wolves that accompany the god Odin, with howls. Their names mean Ravenous and Greedy in Old Norse. After they recite the invocation phrases, I shout this spear, I scream loudly. Then the ravens of Odin, Hugin and Munin, are invoked, who traveled the world observing everything and giving news. At the end they all invoke Odin repeating all the names by which the god is known until reaching ecstasy, preparing for battle. Mighty of the court, the wise, the dear, the one who talks to wolves, the welcome, the pale, the god of desires, inspiring, chief, red-haired, hooded, wand-bearer, famous lord, god of the hanged, wanderer of the mist, the needy, father of Yule, the tall one, rider on the attack, father of all, tree of victory, the one with the lost eye, who throws the spear, shining eye, throws a shaking shield, leader of the people the one with knowledge, bearer of cloak, keeper of secrets, the terrible, the stormy. Also at the beginning of the song the horse of the god Odin is invoked. A hug.

    I attended the ritual (they don't do gigs or concerts) in London last year and the bird song is present throughout. Instead of having pre-recorded music playing through the PA before they started, it was birdsong, wind noises and other sounds of nature. The performance begins and ends with someone cleansing the stage, gear and audience with sage. Even though we were in the middle of a big city, it was as though we'd been transported back to a forest clearing in the pre-Christian era. It was a very emotional and spiritual experience.

    The lyrics come from the poetic edda and is about Odin, the All Father, God of Gods, the highest of the Aesir.
    Odin gave up an eye to see into the future and gain knowledge and hung himself on the tree, Yggdrasil, and remained there until the runes came to him. He moves in and out of realms disguised as many men but often depicted in a cloak and a hat. Among many other things that can describe Odin, this song does him Justice.

We all descend from the one great being that was always there. Before people lived and named it, before the first seed sprouted." When I quoted that directly on the video it is posted in, I got hate from white supremacist groups for months after, even though it is right there on the video. It's so sad that white supremacists have tainted this music and culture with their poison. They spit in the face of everything their ancestors were.

    I love it when India does Heilung.
    Our good Christian mother has a Viking soul oh yes. India you may not have the historical background knowledge about this culture but clearly from the very first Heilung you reacted to it was clear that you instinctively understood it. You are a star.

    • @briganfree3656
      @briganfree3656 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An earlier poster used the word primal which is why India has such a reaction to it. Primal is basic instincts all the way back to the animals. It does transcend race, colour and region. This is about the Norse All Father Odin. But beneath that runs a culture which is all about tribal warfare. Survival of the fittest yes. But is that really a good thing. Back in the day this harks to they would kill or starve the sick disabled and injured. If you could not contribute to the tribe then you were seen as a burden. If you had status and respect then you would be killed outright. If you were only a woman cooking food and cleaning up then you would be denied food and water and left out in the cold to die. This is the culture which ultimately led to Nazism.

    The song is dedicated to the Germanic deity most commonly known as Odin, from the Viking Era, but is likely one and the same as the Proto-Germanic Wodanaz, which developed many names throughout the numerous Germanic tribes ranging from Woden, to Othan, to Oden, etc. Although his name is likely derived from something akin to "The Inspired One", he seems to have been largely associated with war and death during the more polytheistic days of the Germans, before ascending to a near Henotheistic status as more and more attributes were associated with him. Aside from being a deity closely associated with the persuit of wisdom and magic, (which he plucked out his eye and hanged himself in exchange for), he is also associated with omens, (messages of wisdom), war, storms, (also an ancient association), and is the collector of honorable souls.
    That being said, Woden was as ominous as he was revered and he, along with Tiwaz or Tyr, seems to have also been honored by human sacrifice, including captured enemy soldiers, cowards and poor fighters, and even virgins or sons. The sounds of crows and wolves are also associated with Woden, as his two crows acted as scouts and information gatherers, and his two wolves are suspected to represent his more warlike traits. Admittedly most of what we know about him is from the Viking Age of later and is rather scant, but by piecing together bits from Old English, Gothic accounts, and Latin encounters, it seems evident that the Germanic peoples, while poor and fairly primitive, retained a stable religious system.
    As for the ominous, deep, and gutteral sound within the music... well, that's Germanic and a lot of throat singing for you. Then again, the Germans were the most feared force of the Old World, save for the Huns, although the former outlasted the latter, so it is only natural that the Germanic deity of war, death, dark forests, hidden wisdom, and omens is remembered in a ceremony that is as beautiful as it is disturbing.

    Draupnir (Dripper, the magic ring of Odin that on every ninth night has eight equally heavy rings drip off it. It's a symbol of wealth and abundance)
    Geri, Freki (Greedy and Ravenous, Odin's two wolves)
    Sleipnir (Slippy or the Slippery One, Odin's eight-legged steed that was said to slide across the sky as easily as across the plains or sea)
    Gugnir (The Swaying One, Odin's spear that never misses and always returns to the thrower's hand when thrown)
    First chant is "Hail, Hail, Hail I dedicate to the spear - Gagaga, Gagaga, Gagaga I yell resoundingly!"
    Haugen, Maunen (Hugin and Munin, Thought and Memory, Odin's two ravens he sents out to be his eyes and ears in the world)
    Rest of the chant are the Allfather's many many names.
    I found a really nice page that translates it neatly and here is the link:

    It is pronounced more like "high-loong" but Alfadhirhaiti (Names of the All-Father) is invoking Odin, the All-Father. It mentions his ring, Draupnir, his mount, Sleipnir, his spear, Gugnir, as well as his wolves, Geri and Freki (Greedy and Ravenous), and his ravens, Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) before giving all his names (Ok, Alfadhir heitir "And he's called All-Father"). And Odin was/is known by many, many names and faces and roles.

    I really like your enthusiasm with this, i love you even, you really seem genuinely interested, yes it was a warrior culture and captured parts of Brittain and France, then integrated with time.
    Even for a danish, norwegian, icelandic or german, this is incomprehensible, this is an extinct viking language, one of them may gone to university to study this, and then we have the ancient instruments to learn, this is pretty impressive even for a Scandinavian, happy to show the world this as its part of all our common history, vikings sailed to U.S and Africa before any could document it, this could fit the year 600 to 900 before christianity wich came around year 1000, greetings from demark /hug

    The recitation is of some (I stress some) of the names of the God Odin. They start by calling out his Wolves, Freki and Geri, who stride at his side. They then call on his Ravens, Hunnin and Munnin, Thought and Memory, who he sends out everyday to report on the deeds of man. They call out his Ring, Glaupnir, which drips gold rings each day. His Spear, Gugnir, which strikes true. His horse, Sleipnir, the 8 legged beast that never tires and can ride over everything.
    We then get a few of Odins names. Grimm, All Father, Old One Eye, Blind Guest, Hanged One, Glad of War etc.
    Odin as the Chief God oversees all the 9 realms. He is not fully immortal however and is doomed to die. He gave his eye whilst hanging himself from the Tree of Life to know this future. He also learnt all the known magics at the same time including the Runes.
    Most people think that Thor is the greatest god and rules Valhalla, it is in fact Odin who is the mightiest and the owner of Valhalla. Thor has his own Hall where farmers go.
    Odin is not a God easily swayed nor can he be bribed. He expects you to live and die well that is all.

  • @ironmanrock1
    @ironmanrock1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The first few lines of the song refer to some of Odin's allies/belongings. Including Sleipnir, the six legged horse, Geri and Freki, his wolves, Draupnir, the magic ring that copies itself every 9 days, and Gungnir, his magical spear that never misses.

    I love hearing different races and etnicities (other than whitey) give their take on stuff like this. I guess I find it interesting because it's not their cultural heritage per se, BUT... it inspires the same feelings of primal awe, ... because deep down we all have tribal ancestors, and some of us have lost our roots long ago, while others more recently, and (the lucky ones) not at all.
