And honestly kind of tragic that it all comes down to Purturabo feeling underappreciated and ignored for too long and not realizing til it was too late that it was all because he refused to see it. The scene where he asks if his men carried out the sack and was told there were some who refused and were put down, and how he smiled hearing that some of his sons refused to do it... the sons that made him the proudest were the ones strongest enough to say no to him because they did something he never could, tell his father 'no, I won't do this'

I would love, in the inevitable lore to come, for the Iron Warriors to become their own Chaos faction, akin to the Skaven in Fantasy. Just a legion of Renegades who hate the Imperium, hate the other Chaos factions, hate the Chaos gods, and who fight to gather gene-seed and other resources, or just to stick it in everyone else's eye. Ol' Perty can come back and tell everyone that his becoming a Daemon Prince was a gross lie, and then reveal that he was the one who engineered the Obliterator virus in order to stave off the Chaos Cancer Fulgrim stuck him with, then proceed to show off himself being the Obliterator Prime by vomiting a Volcano Cannon blast directly in his brother's pink, snakey face. You know I'd like to see a dramatic reading where the Iron Warriors meet the Krieg Death Korps. Would they hate them seeing a mirror image of themselves but fanatically loyal? Would they pity them for the same reason? Would they respect them for seeing a guardsmen regiment willing to go toe to toe with them using similar tactics?

While them being a part of Chaos was mainly so they could use demonic energy to power their machines, they could've been independent and captured demons and used them for their machines. Its hard to say, as its location varies from one map to the next, but in a Loyalist Iron Warrior timeline or even a different failed Golden age of the Imperium timeline, that Kreig would territorially have been under the fiefdom of Perturabo and the Iron Warriors of Olympia.

loyalist perturabo would have been more hardcore than anyone else. covering the retreat from istvaan five, getting ferrus manus remains, bashing fulgrims head in, leaving. prepping the solar sector for siege warfare, throwing the imperial fist out of the palace on the defense lines and giving angron the death he so desperately needed. of course there might be the idea of some particular goth femboy coming to mind, but the night hunter was complimentary for the lord of the shadows, until the glitter gloryhounds srewed him other (spot light primarchs!). whereas for perturabo there was no stand in anymore. the second legion and their primarch with all their seriousness, realism and commitment were already gone. warmaster in all but name, or they should never have given the title to a primarch at all...
if there is a real world analogue of the Iron Warriors it has to be China during WW2. the Chinese efforts gets totally ignored and they had some of the BIGGEST battles of the entire war. The casualties both military and civilian where apocalyptic especially as just like the Soviet union vs the Nazis the Japanese regarded their foes with utter contempt as inhuman. it was not a war for victory but extermination against a foe willing to sink to any length, that denies your humanity.
