The Iron Warriors get a lot of flack, but of all the legions, they had the most reason to turn against the Imperium. They fought wars of attrition and grinding siege. All the fights that the other legions either would not or could not fight. The number of lost soldiers they have incurred probably outnumbers almost all the other legions combined. Their style of combat didn't look good enough to the other legions, so they would often be mentioned only in passing or ignored in the telling of these victories. They did this without complaint time after time. Even a single acknowledgement would have been enough for them, but they would never receive it.
True, and i don't get the hate.. They are fucking awesome, and i lpve their reasoning, joining chaos cause spite.. Its great.. And they aren't even in do the mutation, more the use of it.. And the spite.. And their rivals believe in fortification, yet they are not the once called spineless..
If you want to call it a ‘reason’ or ‘motivation’, I would argue the Night Lords were the most primed to go traitor. Literally 100% of them were scum when they were still MORTAL. Kurze himself deserves a lot of sympathy of course, but his legions degeneration all but sealed their fate
To put it as simple as possible to avoid spoilers. Since Perturabo was found very late, compared to the other primarchs, the 4th Legion was used as cannon fodder from almost every other legion. Every battle where they expected major losses to win, they send the Iron Warriors in first to take the biggest hits, so their own legion would not lose as much soldiers. Thats why he said that they conquered so many worlds and won so many fights, but it was never "their" victory. In the end the other Primarchs would always claim those worlds for themselves. And thats why they are so bitter, they never got any recognition for their victorys, their sacrifices, for all the blood that was spilled.
I will correct a little, even after the accession of Perturabo, realizing that he was a weapon in the hand of the Emperor, he agreed to all siege and garrison assignments. So while the rest of the legions were engaged in quick and glorious battles and victories. Iron warriors mostly guarded planets or various necessary military stations, or sat for years and decades on sieges. In sieges, the last blow was often delivered by other legions. Well, the manner of war and the attitude to ordinary people that fought with them, also did not help the positive glory.

Hearing a Iron Warrior Traitor Marine recount the "Great crusade" and further back the "Unification Wars" on Terra is simply breathtaking. As a long time fan, I could easily tell that he his willing to fight the Imperiam without the aid or demonic blessings of "Chaos" because he is IRON WITHIN.
