  • Dan McCool and Mike Phillips show you step by step how to use the Dr. Color Chip Repair System to quickly do rock chip repair work to any car.
    Step 1
    Inspect the car for rock chips by walking around the car and looking for areas of missing paint in all the normal areas like the front bumper, the front of the hood, door edges, the edges of the trunk lid, edges of a hatchback door or around the gas tank filler lid.
    Step 2
    Wipe the areas with rock chips clean using a waterless wash. This will help you to identify actual rock chips and dirt specs or bug splatter.
    Step 3
    Pick and match the best color of Dr. ColorChip touch-up paint to match the paint on the car to be repaired.
    Step 4
    Use the correct technique to apply the touch up paint.
    The dab and smear Technique
    Dab a tiny amount of paint in front of a rock chip to be repaired. Then using your thumb or finger smear the paint into the rock chip.
    The squirt and squeegee technique
    For this technique you use paint that's in the squirt bottle. Squirt a little paint in front of the rock chip and then use the squeegee blade to spread the touch-up paint into the chipped area.
    You can also apply a drop or two of paint onto the squeegee and then use the squeegee to spread the paint into the chipped area.
    Step 5
    Shake the Sealact Blending Solution well so that it's fully mixed. Then apply a liberal amount to the lint free wiping cloth with a flat surface. Gently rub the wiping cloth over the touch-up paint to remove any excess off the factory paint and level the touch-up paint.

    I was an early adopter of this product on my Mica black metallic Mazdaspeed 3. This product works, when finished, you basically had to know where the chip was before and look at it real close in the right light to see where the chip was. The repair seemed tougher than the original paint and I never had a chip appear again in the same spot. I now purchase a kit for every car I own.

    this stuff really works. As stated above, it doesn't fill the chip- ie: it would be flush with your exiting paint. However, for those annoying and inevitable stone chips that occur, this stuff is incredible-- AND DURABLE! I first started using this product 3 years ago. Not only have I never needed to refill a previous treated chip, none of the chips I've treated have ever rusted (I live in western, NY, where we have harsh winters and use road salt), one kit has been more than enough sealant and paint for 3 years worth of chips, and the pain still works beautifully! This is one of the few products that does what it claims! ohhh and the color match is perfect!

    I have used this product on a black 2006 Highlander to fill in road rash as well as deeper chips, and it has worked very well. Usually use it in the spring after a touch winter and in the fall. Bought the car with many chips so had lots of practice to perfect the process. Always got comments about how good my car looked for its age.

    Just tried it for the first time - I like it. There's a knack to removing just the right amount of paint - obviously if you rub for long enough, it ALL comes off. I don't mind the fact that I sometimes don't get it right the first go. Yes I can still see the chips, but there has been a worthwhile improvement.

    I am so glad I trusted what I saw on your TH-cam channel and decided to order my kit to repair the chips on my Cirrus White 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA250. I noticed a lot of small chips (around 40 on the front bumper AFTER I bought the car and was a bit nervous that I'd have to get it repainted. I saw a TH-cam video highly recommending your product and when I applied it to my car, I was nervous until I saw the results! WOW! Standing less than a foot away, I cannot tell that their were chips. Even up close I have a very difficult time identifying where the chips were. I have to touch the surface to truly know. I am so pleased with the results!!!

    Color chip is what it does “color your chip in” if your have a deeper chip it will not fill in, it does a good job for very small chips. I applied it 6 times using this method it colored it in that’s it. It cleans up real good outside the chip area, I will continue to apply it. So, in the end it will “color your chip in “ . I will post again on my progress.

    Just used this kit now, the Squeegee blade Kit, squeegee is useless it will take the paint right off, i tried 5 different times, impossible to get good results. So then tried using my thumb, this had better results, but not sure if the paint was mixed too thin, but it did not do a good job of "sitting" in the small and medium chips.
    The best results i had was with these tiny little brushes you get with a super small "fuzzy" Q-Tip. These worked best because you could dab paint next to chip and "roll" the brush over chip.
    Then let it dry.. 4mins 26c outside. EVERY TIME the chip was still visible.
    The colour, for my horrible to find paint for the new Mazda CX5 "Soul Crystal Red" (that will be a extra 1,000 Euros also please , says Mr Mazda sales man) the Dr Chip color in pot and on brush looked to match really well, but again, once on and once removed the over paint, the chip was not smooth. Even in this video when it zooms in, you can still, pretty clearly see chips underneath.
    Summary: IT works well to cover the base layer after you get a chip, you will have a extra layer of protection that should be good enough against rust. The formula that wipes of access is great, you only get/end up with paint in the chip.
    Overall 6/10 Not bad, but not very good either. BUT Better than nothing (which what Mazda offered me, "uses 3 layers of paint process, blah blah blah, get used to the chips buddy, its how all the paint is made on new cars now) thats what they told me!

    I believe I followed these tips and even after multiple drops and wipes, I was not happy with there was still a crater. We are talking about a average scratch - not too deep.
    Also there was a lot of extra paint around the chip and it was really hard to use the Sealact to remove. I may go back to the old method of filing the chip and sanding it flat.

    These guys are kidding you. This is the old "Duco" lacquer we sprayed on cars in the 1960s. The Sealact is just Duco thinners with something white added to it to make it look wonderfully mysterious. Duco thinners will not affect the water paint on new cars or acrylic. The products they sale don't tell you openly what it is. Unfortunately, motor vehicle paint stores no longer carry this paint. So Dr. ColorChip has you by the balls.

    Let me add a tip..maybe you should try this. After the car is clean, degreased and clay barred - THEN do the chips before compound, polish and micro-polish Why ? I have found that you get a very good blend when you do it this way so it looks less like corrected chips and more like uniform paint. I did this on my car and you cant even see where there are corrections....if you really hunt, close up, with a light and point it out specifically to someone, they might see it but otherwise, done.

    • @mrrobvs
      @mrrobvs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you do it last, after polishing, do you anticipate that it will dull the panel in any way? Your tip is a good one. Their directions say to do it in a different order, one that involves doing everything else, then dr. colorchip, then wax. I'm about to do a ceramic coating. My plan of attack was going to be clean, clay (etc.), dr. colorchip, polish, ceramic. I wasn't concerned as much with uniformity of results like you were, but was concerned with it taking the surrounding area to a less than ideal shine. What are your thoughts?

    • @DougnutJR
      @DougnutJR 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found that the "sealact" leaves behind kind of a haze, so it's helpful to have a detail spray to follow up with the paint procedure. I do think it's a good idea to do the dr colorchip procedure BEFORE compound and polishing because the compound and polish will also polish the colorchip repaired spot making the whole area more uniform.

    • @mrrobvs
      @mrrobvs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not impressed by this product. Before doing any detail work I hit a spot that I knew I'd have to hit again. When I hit it the next week (before even using Sealact) my brush and/or squeezee pulled the old touchup paint out of the spot WAAY TOO easily. Like touching up your car with watercolor.

    • @evanodder6948
      @evanodder6948 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrrobvs yeah watch the video again. If you waited a week before sealact you did it wrong. Sealact seals and activates the curing process.

      It depends on the color too. For white this works surprisingly good. For metallic black (like my car) it colors your chip but don't expect the chip to look seamless. It'll be harder to find for people who don't know where the chip is, but you'll see it. I'd give it a good review, it does what intended, at no point it's marketed to "fill" your chips. Unless, that is, that you take your time to go about half a dozen times over the same chip. You'll fill it in pretty neatly but it'll take a lot more product.

Shook the paint well as before, used the squeegee, let it dry 5 or 6 minutes until dry to the touch. Rubbed lightly with the SealAct and noticed the paint around the chips was dull and there were a couple of other areas that were dull as well. I buffed the area with the microfiber towel but the dull areas remain. This is a Tundra I have babied since I bought it, kept it detailed. I have seen guys do a lot better jobs using other equipment and tools. Yes, Dr. Colorchip does make that specific color. It's called Galactic Aqua Metallic and the Color Code is 221. It would be the best OEM match for that color! You can purchase your kit on our site - www.autogeek.net/dr-colorchip-paint-chip-repair.html

    how does the solvent not remove the paint that you want? how does it only remove the excess and not the stuff in the chip? is it because you're rubbing across the chip, so the solvent doesn't touch what's in the dip?

    • @autogeek
      @autogeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The paint included in Dr. Colorchip repair kits is not regular touch-up paint and is made to work with the SealAct solution. It is much softer and is able to be removed with the SealAct. The paint once put in will harden over the next 30 days to full strength.

    I'm a bit confused. It is claimed this fix is permanent, yet the Sealact product easily removes the paint, regardless of how long the paint has been curing on the surface.
    I understand also this is no professional body shop repair. My concern is how well the Dr ColorChip repair stands up to the test of time. Will it need periodical touch ups?

    • @eternalperspective7460

      Pay attention to what their saying bro, it won't need any more touch ups after that. If you get NEW paint chips (or road rash) it can cover those too.

    So I have a question. I previously fixed a couple areas on my truck using the Ford OEM paint touch-up bottle. So chips are filled with paint, but what would be the best way to remove that paint to fix the chip with your kit? I just ordered one of your kits but have no idea how to remove the prior paint I dabbed in the area.

    • @PhunScience
      @PhunScience 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acetone should remove the touch up paint. Use a soft cloth with acetone and wipe the area.

    • @ironbee3077
      @ironbee3077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that I needed to use the Sealact product that came with the kit, straight after I applied the paint, and that removed the excess paint around the filled in chip. I really needed to rub hard with the Sealact
      to get rid of all the paint but got a really good result after doing that. Apparently if the Sealact doesn't get rid of all the paint first time, you can still go back a few days or weeks later and have another go.

    I purchased a used vehicle and it has some rock chip stops that have some minor rust in them. Do I need to sand down the rust first before applying this paint?

    • @autogeek
      @autogeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chips that are allowed to go untreated often begin to rust, and you will see the exposed rust in the chip. You can get a rust converter at most auto parts stores or even at a home supply store and using one of our microbrushes can carefully apply the rust converter to the rusted chip. Be careful not to get the rust converter on the clearcoat around the perimeter of the chip as that can haze the clearcoat. You can then use the Dr. ColorChip Touchup kit to fill the chips creating a moisture barrier to prevent further spread of the rust.

    • @Charkatak
      @Charkatak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@autogeek I see. If I understood you correctly, I can either clean the rust (a surface rust in my case) then apply touch up paint OR if that is not possible then using rust converter which will contain the rust and then paint over the chip. I have multiple simple small rock chips and another spot which is on the side of the hood that is closest to the cowl area and is ~ 1 inch in length and very narrow. It does show some surface rust as well. Thank you, this information should be enough to tackle to problem!
