For the quality and price Mora Garberg and the Benchmade Pukko is top notch. I have both knives. I love the size and shape of the Benchmade pukko for crafting things and fire craft. I took a stone to the spine of the knife and made it sharp for a ferro rod.

Look up the Rothco Ramster, I bought one and for a hollow handle knife it seems to be good. Its a copy of the buckmaster 184, might make a good video to pull the muscle suit out for.

Okay boys I have a serious question for you about this benchmade 202 leuku vs the 200 puuko, it's been said the puuko was not hardened very high and therefore didn't hold an edge very long buttttt that benchmade did in fact alter their heat treatment protocol for leuku and ran them slightly higher hrc so my question is do you notice a difference??? I sure did just in sharpening them side by side...

Not to take a middle ground intentionally, but having had all sorts of knives on the higher end, small batch production knives are most reliably consistent performers. You get a balance of consistency from knife to knife with careful, individual attention to detail in quality control. All of that provided that a maker knows what he is doing. Survive!, TRC, Williams Blade Design, Winkler, I think would all be in that category, and obviously there are others. And, obviously it depends on what you want and need. If you want good looks mostly or cost savings or "cool" factor, that's a different story. Only thing that matters for me personally is reliability and performance for my needs.

      hey Cole,
420HC is sadly not a good steel. It's very outdated yet some manufacturers keep continue to use it. *Cough Cough... buck...
The best steel though depends on your needs. As a budget steel 1095, 01, 14c28, 80crv2 are good choices. in the higher class most CPM steels will have solid performance

A test of the different old school "bushcraft"-knifes would be fine. Like the different Kephart-Versions (BK62 vs Bark River Kephart 5 for example) or the Nessmuk knifes, or how is a Old Hickory butcher knive performing nowadays. Back to roots.... ;)

    • @bernhard7658
      @bernhard7658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

That would be fine: Classic Tests!
If you deal with the Kephart style you have to look at the 'Matrosenmesser' / fixed blade sailor knifes from Güde, Hubertus, Linder, Lütters and Otter!
That would have the opportunity to wear a sexy sailor dress and perform some chanties! ;-)

we suppose that a custom knife is better because it should have better quality control, and when the maker buys certified steel he can do hardening tests until reaching an excellent result
let's remember guys that the good maker is the one who does the tests with criterion. almost all of the videos on youtube that I find show me someone who cuts and breaks bricks with a knife but AFTER they never try to cut hair, paper and when the test is destructive nobody knows how to interpret the break. grain distribution, the fracture lines where they come from and where they go .... everyone says "oops, dammn. it broke .. I will never buy again .... ***** .....
like the kid in the video who breaks the Mora with a brush ... but please! had first learned to batoning ...
unfortunately, and I stress unfortunately I have known makers who have sold a low quality steel instead of a more precious steel ... or (but it would already be a minor damage) incorrect heat treatments ...
sure, let's go on trust. are you sure that that custom knife in Vanadis4 Xtra is Vanadis4 Xtra and not Ma5M? only those who are very experienced, have bought many knives AND HAVE REALLY USED AND SHARPENED THEM MANY TIMES (on the stone) in different types of steels can realize.
the average collector, who "uses" the knives only to cut the salami and point a stick of fir wood cannot
he will never see that he actually bought a 10 € Chinese knife which the "maker" has replaced the grips of the handle and slightly grinded the blade, perhaps polishing it a little better than the factory.
I say this because it really happened.
From that moment on I only buy custom knives if I have known the maker well, when I know that he has a good reputation for MY reputation fees and maybe I have had the opportunity to be invited to see how he works. guys .. let's talk clearly: either military, or extreme trekking, or survivol because you go far where no one can come to find you easily, I need the knife. really, for my life. without it I'm literally fucked up.
they are not like many that I know who have all the expensive models of a famous Italian brand but they use a Chinese knife for 20 or 30 € because the military knife gets damaged by scratching the milspec cover on the blade ...
and they consider themselves great experts ... I gladly give her 1000 € to the maker and it seems to me the least that I go home to see how she works. nobody has ever denied me this.
famous brands that I buy I can count them on the fingers of one hand, some of them being Italian I personally know the designers and the owners of the factory and so I went to visit some factories ..
