Share this video! Always trust an honest mechanic. Let me repeat, I’ve held the bills in my hand for $8,500 to replace a bent lower control arm, which was unacceptable. $800 for throttle body, and entire engine replaced only to realize, it was just an idle control valve. To protect the guilty, I won’t name the companies that did these things to my friends. Thanks for watching the video!

I'm fortunate enough to have a mechanic that doesn't have a problem with me buying my own parts and bringing them to him to install. The only thing he told me was to make sure I buy good quality parts.

Isn't that a purge valve for the evap system

After reading all the comments, I noticed yours really stood out. I looked up the part number and you’re right, that was indeed a purge valve and not an idle control valve. I’m ok with being wrong about that.

@FixiT-Rick no problem, seems like every manufacturer has their own unique design for the same part

People, this gentleman does have mechanic ability but does not understand how shops are run or regulated. I'm not stating that there are not crooked mechanics out there. There are just as many honest ones out there. This video is not a good representation on how to identify if a mechanic is ripping you off.
Yes, you will pay a premium for the mechanic's knowledge, craftmanship and warranty coverage.
If you follow his idea on a throttle body cleaning, and do not know what kind of throttle body is on your vehicle, you will destroy that throttle body. Not all throttle bodies are the same. You will also get a surprise at the location of some of those throttle bodies and the labor involved to access it.
He states repair costs and not what vehicle is being repaired. He only uses his own vehicle as a reference. His vehicle is one of the cheapest and easiest to fix.
Here are some clues if a mechanic is ripping you off:
    1) Uses the words "You need xyz replaced, because it has failed or is bad or is garbage. or is worn out.": As a customer you deserve specifics on why you "need" it. Need implies the vehicle will not operate without it. This is considered a scare tactic. The correct terminology is "I recommend that you replace xyz, because it has exceeded minimum operating specifications. Here is the minimum specification and this is where xyz is at." or something along that line. Data is the important part.
    2) Mechanic states " I've seen this a million times.": Just because, he has seen this issue many times does not mean this is the issue you are experiencing. This is the "Lazy Mechanic". Again, data is the key here. Have the mechanic show his work and how he came to the conclusion that this is your issue.
    3) Shop exceeds original estimate without contacting you for approval.: This is a tricky one. I would use 10% as a rule. Sometimes parts prices and incidental prices change, but it should never exceed 10%. If the change is in the Labor, or the type of repair, time to hold their feet to the fire and ask, "Why didn't you contact me?". You are not responsible for anything that you did not approve. Documentation is the key.
    4) If a shop recommends replacing every single component of one particular system, ie Brake Pads, Rotors & Calipers.: I can understand Pads and Rotors, why the Calipers? Yes, Calipers fail, but not every time the brake pads wear out. There are some systems that are labor intensive and will have parts recommended to replace while they are in there, ie timing belt, water pump, etc. Just ask questions and make them explain it until you understand.
    5) You keep returning to the shop, with the same complaint, and they keep tell you it is a different issue: This is a Crooked Shop! A good shop will acknowledge they got it wrong (It happens), will have you pay for the proper repair, but will credit, or refund, the previous incorrect repair.

We do not go to Amazon, nor rock auto.
Nearly all independent shops use Oreilly’s Napa auto zone etc. They have special accounts and have drivers who deliver parts several Times a day. We don’t have time for 2 day shipping.
We charge more for parts to account for when they go bad. I digress, mechanics are worth what they’re worth for a reason. Don’t like it, then do it yourself. We charge $800 because most won’t be willing.

"This is an idle control valve lmfao" its funny how you don't take into account the diagnostic time to actually know what the problem is instead of guessing and no just because your lil scanner says something it doesn't mean that's whats wrong. That's always the best line "well the lil machine said it was this but it's still doing the same thing " lol

The point is be a man and fix your own vehicle. It's really not that hard. Buy a Jack, some hand tools, a torque wrench and a torch. Under $500 at princess auto or harbor freight will save you thousands at the shop.
