  • Ice build-up is the common culprit of an ice maker not having ice in the tray. This video will work with:
    KitchenAid.
    LG.
    Frigidaire.
    Whirlpool.
    Samsung.
    GE Appliances.
    Maytag.
    Café
All that is needed is a hair dryer to melt the ice to get the ice maker working again!
    Hope this video is helpful!

Just brilliant! I was a little iffy about the hair dryer as so many people mentioned the thin lining so I used the heat from my hand, chipped at it with a butter knife wrapped in a thick towel, and waited a bit. Took a bit longer but I can rest at night lol. I have ice y’all!!!

Hmmm great idea to fix this problem. I just use a meat tenderizer hammer and bust the ice off the bottom in about 45 seconds. It shouldn’t be happening on a $2000 fridge. Bad design flaw. Will never buy a Samsung fridge again.

If you ARE going to use a hair dryer, I suggest that you use it on a "No Heat" setting, or "Low Heat" setting so as to not to damage the plastic liner of the ice maker rendering the ice maker completely useless. Many folks think a high heat hair dryer setting will yield a hotter, faster, better melting of ice condensate, however; it will also melt the plastic liner on the ice maker.

Ive had this unit for 7 years. I take my tray out and leave it out for a week or two. This will defrrost it as well as make ice at the same time. I know it sounds crazy but it works. I save the ice in a container after sliding it out of the icemaker since the tray is removed.

This method works but is s a temporary fix at best. I have to defrost our ice maker like you describe in the video every few months (and we us a lot of ice so the bucket is rarely full). It also randomly decides it won't work even when it's not frosted up. I even fully defrosted it recently, did a full re-set (unplug the fridge for 2+ minutes) and cleaned every inch of the exterior, grates, etc. to remove even the most minor dust build up last night and after a couple re-sets and 14+ hours for it to make new ice it's still not working properly. It dropped about three pieces of ice over a 14 hour period. I know it can take a while to get back to normal after a re-set but in half a day it ought to be making more than a few pieces. Honestly this thing is more trouble than it's worth. A fridge with a larger freezer and three ice cube trays is a much more reliable way to constantly have enough ice, and it's completely hassle free. I'm at the point where I'm tempted to buy a better model even though this one's only 3 years old.
There are known issues with certain Samsung refrigerators with built in ice makers (this particular model isn't properly insulated and sealed), stoves (display flickering that can eventually prevent it from working properly and requires the display be replaced), and microwaves (starts up when you don't quite close the door). We've got 4 Samsung appliances and three of them have these exact issues. I'll never buy another Samsung kitchen appliance without doing a lot of research into the model and potential issues.

@@mariaixta24 it’s just a matter of pulling it, if it doesn’t move it means the back of the tray is stuck between the ice. I recommend using a heat gun from the bottom while doing light pulls on the tray to help “chip” some of the ice away till it finally comes off. I ended up breaking a piece of the tray (doesn’t affect performance) off because I just kept yanking it 😂. Anyways good luck 👍🏽

As a technician do you how many times I have seen customers burning the liner by using a hair dryer? The plastic liner on those Samsung refrigerator is really thin. The best way to melt the ice on a refrigerator is by using a steamer. Small ones are like 20 bucks. I use it to clear a frozen drain line, to defrost an evaporator or Samsung ice makers. I recently went to a Samsung fridge where a customer damaged the the liner inside the ice maker area compartment by using a hair dryer. That was unrepairable cause now it was impossible to insert or put the ice tray in place. The bad thing about was the he paid 5000 dollars for the fridge and the fridge was only 3 months old.

On my Samsung, I have to remove the icemaker. There is a horizontal slot on the back wall where a fan blows over a cooling coil that keeps the ice in the tray frozen. This slot gets blocked with ice and the ice melts and refreezes inside & outside the icemaker. That frozen slot needs to be opened up in order for the icemaker to work properly. Also there are pins that need to be clamped onto the cooling coil so when it drips, it drips into the drain & not on the edge & over the side, causing more ice to buildup under the ice maker.
    Update:
I just ordered these parts to eliminate the moisture that infiltrates the ice maker and causes it to stop working. This is a complete video on how to install these parts and permanently fix the problem: th-cam.com/video/brYA8j-CZSQ/w-d-xo.html

The most difficult thing is I can’t open the ice bin in the first place to use the dryer . What can I do?

There’s a defrost mode it takes about 30 minutes . You might have Tun the cycle twice but should get you to open the the tray

I thawed out the tray just fine. However, 24 hours later there is still no new ice. Does it take longer than that?

And, you don’t show how to turn the ice maker back on in the video.

I can’t even get the tray out of the maker. You make it look so easy pulling it out of the maker.

On the door panel, the lighted touch-switch says "Ice off." When I press it, the switch won't respond. Your thoughts?

Try resetting the fridge, by switching the breaker off then back on. Thst might reset it.

So we did this, and now our ice maker won't make any ice at all. We've tried pushing the blue button on the top left of the component inside the maker,. We've heard it beep several times, to no avail. Any idea what the issue might be?

I can't make noise now with the hair drier (baby sleeping) so what I just did was remove the tray and leave the icemaker without it, so the ice maker is open to the fridge and hopefully will get to the fridge temperature. That should also make the ice melt over time (waaaay longer though). Put some paper towels underneath to get water... I'll check it over time and let you know the outcome tomorrow.

nope, that didn't help... but using steam instead of the hair dryer worked like a charm !

On my third time doing this in 3 months. Samsung should really reconsider their setup on these.
