Been there and done that in November 1972. I never knew that ice could grow on the ground because I lived in Hawaii and never left that state. Boy, was I freezing my ass off throughout the training 😂

Went through BCT at Fort Dix in August 1969. All the DS and cadre had been in RVN and had the CIB. Battalion commander and first sergeant had been in the Korean war, and one NCO had been in WWII, Korean War and RVN. Tough bastards. They were rough on us but later I realized they were trying to teach us to survive.

We had a guy guy like that too: He owned a successful business and kept fucking up, hoping to be put out. One day the Senior Ds and the Other DS's cornered him and told him: "You're not getting out, if we have to recycle you ten times." After that he stopped being a fuckup.

Went to Dix in 1991, those newer brick barracks in the video half of them were vacant in 1991. Soldiers returning from Iraq stayed in some of them and somewhat trashed the rooms, laying wall lockers on the floor to sleep on them and not the beds. Beer cans everywhere. Even found multiple cassette copies of Robert Plant: Manic Nirvana someone must have been giving them. A drill sergeant threw a rock through a barracks window and said, "There's something for maintenance to do now."

My Dad was there on that day in very close proximity to the BOMARC Missile that exploded. The Philadelphia Inquirer interviewed him about it. The water poured on the missile spread the plutonium throughout the area. My Dad died of a rare form of Cancer attributed to the plutonium that escaped the warhead after the explosion. I cannot get the Army to recognize his death attributed to that Broken Arrow incident. Check out the book "Command and Control"
