    I've lived in Bayonne for the first two decades and a half of my life. There are ups and downs, just as any other place. They say that the more downtown you go, the more suburban it is - which is partially true. There's still housing on some streets and then a block or two away it almost looks like a completely different neighborhood. Upper Bayonne which borders Jersey City starts to become more like Jersey City's ghettos (slowly but surely.) What ultimately have me leave (other than having a partner and a child) is the rent becoming ridiculously high with the invasion of building condos to rent out to New Yorkers for a cheap price and in turn increase the rent. They're trying very hard to make it look like a mix of Hoboken, downtown Jersey City, and extensively New York. The taxes and bigger businesses drive out smaller businesses within a few years after they open.

  • @mstyles2667
    @mstyles2667 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Bayonne is a safe suburban city with a more urban vibe, good public transport in many forms. Close to NYC, easy to access highways and not known for being rough anymore. It was always more of a blue collar town but rent is very expensive now and it will be unaffordable within the next 5 years. Bayonne is not hood, you will most likely never get robbed, shot or stabbed in Bayonne. It is diverse ethnically and used to have a crazy big Italian population back in the day. The Bayonne bridge takes you to Staten Island as well. It is a nice place to live overall.

  • @al5603
    @al5603 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    Thanks for the video, but Bayonne was NEVER considered the hood. Most of the hood cities in Jersey are better than they were in the 90's. But the main hood cities in Jersey were Newark, Camden, Trenton, Jersey City and Paterson.
    And to a lesser degree East Orange, Orange, Elizabeth, Atlantic City, New Brunswick, Plainfield and Asbury Park. And to a much lesser degree, but still had some rough areas were Rahway, Passaic and Salem which is WAY down south Jersey.

    • @al5603

      I forgot to mention Irvington in that second group of old hood cities in Jersey.

    • @tribeofjudah7727
      @tribeofjudah7727 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Truck Back in the day Irvington ,East orange and Elizabeth was rougher than Paterson and Trenton East Orange and Elizabeth calmed down and clean up a lot Irvington is still bad and dirty Bayonne was Never the hood even in the crack era days

    • @al5603
      @al5603 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Tribe I agree and disagree with you. I was born and raised early in my life in Newark, Grafton ave p's. When we moved to East Orange, Halsted st., it was much nicer and a step up from Newark. Irvington was nice too in the 80's.
      In the 90's once the whole gang shit started happening, then E.O. and Irvington started to get wild. Paterson was worse than E.O., Irvington and Elizabeth from the 90's on back. From the 90's on up it's debatable. The movie Lean On Me about Paterson was the real deal about that city.

    • @tribeofjudah7727
      @tribeofjudah7727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truck I work with a guy from Paterson he said Elizabeth was more dangerous than Paterson in the 90s I’m from Newark too I remember the pioneer homes in Elizabeth those projects was on the same level as prince st ,Seth boyden ,Dayton st and little bricks to me Irvington was just as bad as Newark in the 90s

    • @al5603
      @al5603 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know about Pioneer by the water and them E Port Posse cats, but Paterson had the Alabama p's which was the same shit. But I'm from The Bricks and nothing compared to Prince St p's, Hayes, Scudder, Dayton St p's, my old hood Grafton ave p's, 7th ave p's, Lil Bricks, Baxter Terrace, Bradley Court, Hyatt Court, Pennington, Stephen Crane, Brick Towers and even Georgia King Village. And that don't include the cats living off Central ave, S. Orange ave, Springfield ave, Clinton ave, Avon ave, Hawthorne ave, Bergen st, Irvine Turner and all the rest of the blocks. Growing up in Newark and later E.O. gave me life lessons that I carry on till this day.

    I grew up in Bayonne, lived there from when I was 6 until I was 55. It was never the hood, being a peninsula with only the bridge at one end and city line with 3 roads in and out crime was never a big factor. The police saw every car going in and out and knew most of the residents because we all grew up together. Sure it's changed from the tight nit community it was when I was a kid but it's still pretty safe. In fact my daughter and many family still live there. The hood?😂 Not even!!

    I was stationed at the Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne my last 7 months in the army, just after I got back from overseas. November 1973-June 1974. I had never seen anything like it in Virginia, but I grew to like the area and the people I met there. I even toyed with the idea of staying there when I got dishcarged but I had already made plans to return to Virginia (which I've never regretted). Two things I remember about the area is Bayonne had a beautiful city park and the jobs seemed to be plentiful and fairly decent when it came to pay (unlike Virginia at the time). I even dated a girl who worked for Campbell Cab Co. as a driver. Her name was Marsha. I wonder if Campbell's is still in business? I've enjoyed the video and my own personal walk down memory lane.

    Bayonne has always been a nice town. Almost a stones throw from Manhattan. Now they are building high rises 10-12 stories everywhere. They are getting 25 year tax abatements and these bigger apartments are located near Lite Rail. Trying to attract the young New Yorkers because the city is so expensive. But wait till they find out the Lite Rail takes about 30-45 minutes to Jersey City to the Path system which takes another 30 or more minutes to get to the city. Then you have to get around the city to where you work. I believe we will see people moving in then moving out toBrooklyn where yo can take a train to the city in 35 minutes.
