One of the very best camcorders made, I still use mine regularly and have replaced the screen one one of them. Now it the clock battery that needs replacing but typical of Sony they seem to have hidden it away somewhere inside the camcorder :( Good video by the way!
Thanks DrCassette... my camcoder SR12E having exactly the same problem like yours and i followed all your steps and has successfully replaced a new LCD touch screen which cost me about USD14 (order from China) . Very satisfied as my local Sony Service Center is unable to support this due to old model though it is still functioning very well except the screen. Thanks again for your kind sharing!
Whenever I need soft touch tweezers or pliers I slip a section of heat shrink tubing over my plain ones and shrink it down. The heat shrink also can provide better grip in situations like these
We had the model down from this, the SR10, the screen also stopped working on it, though I'm pretty sure the screen cable stopped working instead. The touch panel worked intermittently.
The LCD I bought, and the LCDs I see online, have only three ribbon cables. They are missing the small one on the left - the one you think is for the backlight. Where can I get the correct one?
What size of harddisk does it use and is it mechanical? It looks like a 2.5” laptop drive might just fit into the enclosure. Some slightly older cameras recorded on 8 cm dvd-rw discs like a dvr.
It is a mechanical 60 GB HDD. Sony also offered the HDR-SR12 with a 120 GB HDD. These HDDs are tiny ZIF drives, as seen in this video from 2011 which shows my original HDR-SR11: th-cam.com/video/lxyCQ2blMcg/w-d-xo.html
I know how much you *love* people correcting your English (yes, that's sarcasm!) but as the saying goes, you learn from your mistakes. While we do say "in front of", we don't follow "behind" with "of". Simply "behind". I know you will HATE this comment, but regardless, your incredible English will now be even more incredible. So please take it in good humour. xxx
I have a problem w my screen it’s not broken or anything i was just using it close it open it again and the screen is like u put a yellow filter on it do u have a solution for that
On my camera, hdr sr12, the LCD screen works. But the touch screen doesn't work, I open twice and clean all connections, but it still doesn't work. I will try to change the LCD screen and see what happens.
The most likely cause of this problem is the flexible cable that connects the screen assembly to the main body of the camcorder through the screen hinge. After years of use these often break. Replacing the cable can be very difficult, because these cables are often routed in very complex ways, connecting to multiple different places inside the body of the camcorder. You can try replacing the whole screen, but I am not very optimistic that will fix the problem. Good luck!
When fully functional a camcorder like this is still worth more than 70€. Also, I have had this model of camcorder from late 2010 until early 2015, so when I saw this camcorder offered for 20€ (plus overpriced shipping), I had to get it just because of the fond memories I have of this model.
@@DrCassette Wow, interesting. Didn't know there is such a community behind it. To me it always looked like worthless & obsolete tech stuff, just like these first generations of smartphones which in most cases aren't worth more than their material value nowadays. And with sentimental value involved even more power to you sir!
@@PzAufklLehrBtl3 I wouldn't say there is a community for aging camcorders. It's just that camcorders hold their value a bit better than smartphones. The HDR-SR11 cost 1200€ in 2008, so even 13 years later it won't be totally worthless.
When the screen stayed dark on power-up, my heart sank. I thought the replacement to be some cheap knock-off. But then ... success! Nice job.
Thankfully reseating the connectors did the trick. If that hadn't worked, I would not have known what to do next...

I am glad this video was helpful :)
Where did you buy it? Product link please?

Great idea, I will do that with one of my tweezers!
The iFixit Precision Tweezers Set is very good. 3 different tweezers for different occasions I regularly use.
thanks for this video same problem than mine new friend here can you tell me where can i buy the replacement lcd for sony hdr xr 500 and 520
All very well, but you neglected to tell us how to dis-assemble the camera and remove the screen.
The human thumbnail; the most basic and useful tool!
And it's always there when you need it :)
I really hate working on cameras or camcorders with all those nasty ribbons that snap-break without I get to know it... good job mate!
Thank you :)

Yes, the screen cable is a very common point of failure on modern camcorders.

Can I replace/repair my lcd screen of Sony S R 45? It's display has not been working(dark) but touchscreen is OK.
Do you do repairs ? I am in London and I’m looking for someone to do the exact same thing on my camera , it’s the same camera

Really nice repair you did there! I have a Sony DCR-PC9E and the screen is cracked on the inside. Do you think I can find a replacement for that?
It would probably be easier to find another DCR-PC9E as a parts donor or as a straight replacement...
@@DrCassette I wish I could but my budget won't allow me to do so.

I bought the replacement screen seen in this video on Ebay.

How long did you have to wait before you found one?
Are these getting rare or collectible or what's the deal in investing 70 € in them?
