- In this video i do my first ever recap on an amiga 600 motherboard i have had in the loft for over 10 years
This machine gave me loads of greif and took a LOT of time to sort out....... I leave a very long video here so you can see how long i took to recap this beast !!!!!
Thanks to DrMulholland of the Norwich amiga group NAG for the tip of which caps arent needed after ripping out the modulator - @NorwichAmigaGroup
Also thanks goto Chris Edwards of @ChrisEdwardsRestoration for some excellent amiga videos...

Biggest thing I learned from installing WB from scratch on my A600 CF was... buy it preconfigured! Setting it up is just so much aggro!
Your not wrong, it's a total pain......
Great job! Glad to see you got it working again!
Cheers, was a complete pain with the CF card but it's all sorted now 👍
Loved it always best way remove the keyboard and connector and audio jacks. Those audio caps are so close lol. Your fish comments made the video matey 😂. Thanks for the video keep up the great work buddy lol
Cheers chap, it really stunk and I hate fish
Make's me wonder if they used fish oil inside them .Coz they always stink lol .. Nice to see its back alive mate .. Great video long but great none the less :) .. Got my CD32 to do .So snip snip will be heading its way lol :) ...
Snipping is deffo the way to go
Tbh the gamegears are the smelliest ones I’ve ever done lol. But Amigas are a close second lol.
Any suggestions where I can buy a new 1200 case? I’ve looked everywhere but they are all out of stock. Would appreciate any help!
A1200.net has some in stock
Did you ever heard of ESD-Safe Production Environment because the electronics could be live longer just without recap it first ;)
The caps were leaking , I'm not sure what you mean by ESD-Safe as that doesn't stop them leaking....... when I solder I have esd strap round ankle if that's what you mean ???
ESD is the least of the issues. the removing components by force is hundreds of times worse!
"PromoSM"
ohh no YET another damn cutter. do NOT cut or twist off the caps! the number of repairs I have been forced to do due to this crappy method.
DO NOT DO IT! if you do not have the proper tools: LET SOMEONE ELSE DO IT!
I'm not really sure what you mean by " Dont have the tools " , I do have a heat reflow gun i do not own heated tweezers ( pointless ) and refuse to go akimbo with 2 irons, Heating the boards that are laminated with 2 materials that have different expansion coefficients is a recipe for disaster, If you are receiving boards from people that have damaged them from bad cap removals then 1) they clearly dont have the skills to remove them properly and 2) Clearly they dont have the skills to repair the boards themselves so should not have attempted (1)...............
@@CaptainCommodore Hot air (not a flamethrower) or hot tweezers (preffered!) iis the only correct tools. Cutting, Twisting, Shooting off with a gun is the wrong method.. you are applying force to pads that might be weakend by the leakage and can (and will) create microcracks. I have seen this faar too many times inspecting under my microscope..
I am receiving boards from people watching youtube videos of twisting and cutting the caps off. a method that never ever should be used.
@ChuckyGang hot air is wildly inaccurate, while in principle hot air can be invaluable in certain circumstances it is far to easy to knock off other components, weaken existing joints and damage the board or other components, heated tweezers, well, I guess that depends what you get, cheap Chinese ones are literally pointless, with a decent pair you risk over-heating one or both pads as they never heat up at the same rate so you inevitably overheat in order to reliably remove the cap, cutting the cap can put some force on the pads if done incorrectly but risks could be mitigated by snipping in the same orientation as the pads - no cross force at all then
@@CaptainCommodore Hot air. not a blowtorch, a fine nozzle and you will not blow away components. and you will not heat up the pads.
if you do not have the correct tools (and knowhow) then simply do not do it..
twisitng, cutting, shooting, using blowtorch is wrong. and WILL damage your board. guess why methods like that would never pass a certification..
@ChuckyGang I have used hot air to remove chips without issue, but that's from dual sided non laminated boards, others mask off the area with kapton or aluminium foil and that can protect the board, but then your left with dumping 200+ degrees into a cap before the pads release..... I'm not against it, I think it simply has more negatives than snipping
