In this video, I walk you through the essentials of shooting video on a Pentax Camera. There are some "rules" to follow...
1) Every Pentax DSLR besides the K-5 should NOT be used with Movie SR on. It causes a pretty severe "jello" effect in the video whenever the camera is moved and/or something moves through the frame at a fast pace.
2) This is a universal rule: ALWAYS use double the shutter speed of your selected frame rate. For example, if shooting at 30 fps, set your shutter speed to 1/60 sec. For 24 fps, use 1/50 sec since there is no 1/48 sec.
Something I didn't mention in the video is to use manual focus or you'll hear the lens focusing and not to mention that the contrast detect focus is pretty slow and will hunt a fair bit.
Other than those rules, just try it out and have fun with it! Also, just like Photography, it's all about light!
The pre-amps on the cameras aren't that bad, but you'll always get better audio results by using an external mic or better yet, a pre-amp and external mic.

I'm not linking to this item as there is no reasonable offer that includes the battery to power it.

Thanks Kobie, that was a very helpful video. I tried out your tips and it resulted in much better video than I'd managed to shoot previously.
I didn't know about using double the shutter speed. Thank you.
Thanks for this! I am just starting out making sewing and coding tutorial videos on TH-cam using a K-50 because that happens to be what I already have. Since I am using a tripod, the shake reduction issue probably won't affect me as much, but my main challenge with filming myself is getting the focus correct especially since I can move a lot while sewing. I've had better luck in Av than in P mode with that so far. Lighting is playing a big role too. Really glad you featured a K-30 since that is very close to the gear I am working with!
No problem! Glad you found it useful 🙂
I have a KS2, hand held videos with shake reduction on, I noticed that the focal length of the lens make the jello affect worse especially when shooting wide or far away subjects. Close up video seems to be good enough. Heavy lenses also helps with stability.
Very valid point. Far objects are way more affected by the jello effect.
I've been using my phone for youtube videos, I'll have to dust off my Pantes kr it's still in great shape. Do you think it would be ok for videos too? Have not picked it up in a couple of years.
It would be okay, but to be honest, the phone would be easier to use. It also depends on the type of videos. The KR will be fixed focus (manual focus only) and no stabilization so you'll need either a tripod or a gimbal for the best quality.
@@KobieMC Good to know perhaps I'll have to break down and get me something new.
Hello, i have a question:
I see on the specifications of the PEntax K-70 that the Pixel registration in Full HD is 1920x1080 = 60i/50i/30p/25p/24p.
Why in your video didn't show up the 60 and 50 fps?
Good question. The answer is that I was using a K-30, the K-70 is a newer camera which I do not have access to.
@@KobieMC Sorry I thought it was a Pentax K-70!
No worries 👍🏽
Drat. Never owned a K5. Went right form K7 to K3.
I never owned a K-5 either. Went K200d, K-30, K-3.
Thx. Gonna try my K-5 now. Surprise - it can shoot 1080p ! I
Thanks Kobie, you got anything specific for K-1?
I wish I did. I don't have a K-1 though. It should be similar to the K-3 though regarding setup.
@@KobieMC I'm thinking of getting a Sigma 18-38 1.8, would it be overkill? Enjoy the Labatt I sent you. Cheers and keep up the good work.
@@funkythiru Thank you for the Labatt donation! As for the Sigma, I'm guessing you meant 18-35 1.8. If you end up with a good copy of it, it's a stellar lens! Early copies were known to have inconsistent AF even after micro adjustment. I have a buddy who has the 18-35 art and loves it. The image quality is outstanding!
Start at the beginning please
What do you mean?
this video have poor quality, and looks awful ( when you're sitting in couch is most obvious ) , and you have said you shoot the video with K3. I have the K3, and can't remember it has such an
ugly video settings and overall quality.
Is there any post processing, maybe poor focus, dowsizing ? What happened ?
Actually, the focus does look off. The only parts done with the K-3 is me on the couch. One of my lights had died, that could be where the issue is regarding the quality. I'm not a videographer though, I'm a photographer, I'm still working on the video side of everything regarding lighting, setup and equipment. Maybe it was the video editor I was using. I've just changed that as of this writing so we'll see how that goes for future videos.
