In this video I take a look at the Pentax K-70 and two lenses. The K-70 is an APS-C DSLR that packs way more punch than the price would indicate. Please note that this is not a review since I only review cameras that I have bought for myself. And when it was my own money I opted for the similarly priced KP, which I have reviewed here: • 5 Reasons to Buy - The...

K-70 was my first dslr, and it was great. I had to give it up and subsequently tried Fuji X-T3 and Nikon D850 kits. Funny thing was, although my skills and knowledge were improving with experience, I realized that most of my favorite pictures were taken with the Pentax. So now I've started over, building a new kit around the KP (even better than K-70), and the fun factor is back. The pixie dust is back. Let all the cool kids have their latest and greatest Fujis and Sonys with their many focus points and video features.

@@sdhute no, i simply love it man!
Its a bit heavy but i got used to it. And there is a small issue with battery life if compared to other models which required me to get a couple more cheap 3rd party batteries from amazon (so problem solved). But those are the only issues i had (the few grams more compared to other dslr models are due to the all metal construction which also has its advantages).
On the other hand i like the handling (find the 3rd wheel very helpful after customising the buttons the way they worked for me), the image quality is stunning paired with the Tamron 17-50 2.8 i got and it has a great IBIS system which allowed me to get some surprisingly clear pics with my telephoto lenses in low shutter speed.

I agree completely. Pentax produces great stills cameras! The build quality of their "entry-level" cameras is superb! The K-system is such fun being able to interchange vintage and modern glass with old film and new digital cameras.

IBIS even with their 14 year old cameras (K10D), works well with legacy glass, WR, steel chassis, pixel shift on APSC, great customisability, in camera raw conversion, astrotracer, pentaprism OVF, great legacy glass that can be had for almost nothing.... seriously I don't know why others buy something else!

Oh yes... I dropped my K-x a few feet onto a wooden floor a few years ago. It was still working when I picked it up, but a corner on the bottom cracked the plastic shell a bit. I did have it fixed last year, as the aperture/zoom view knob was erratic. Still working, and is now the backup to my newer K-70. :)

Alex Ramos I still have a K10D and a K200D with the legendary 10MP CCD Sensor. I also have a right angle viewfinder from the 70s with 2x magnification. Completely compatible with newer Pentax cameras.

@@ShutterKnack I'd score one of those, but I'm dabbling with m4/3 lately. Bought a pair Olympus EM-10 series cameras in the past few months (the II in black, and a III in silver/black) and I'm loving it. Low light is a bit of a challenge, but with the IBIS and fast primes I manage that fairly well. I might go after a E-M5 III body later on, will wait a bit and see if any decent used deals pop up.
As long as my current Pentax stash is functional, I'm good.

      @shred3005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@AlexRamosDrTaz I’ve had many of the Pentax DSLRs *istD, K10D, K-7, K-3 and now K-1. About 5 years ago I started dabble with Olympus M10 and a few of their small lenses because I wanted something small for light travel. I’ve used it quite a bit over those 5 years for travel or days out but I still find the EVF experience disappointing compared to an OVF like the K-3 or (especially) the K-1. Just recently I got a Fuji X-E4 because I just wasn’t happy with the four thirds image quality and that EVF yet I still wanted small for street photography and travel. The IQ from the Fuji is great and while I’m still not a huge fan of EVF it’s got some great attractions and I’ll ditch Olympus (which after 5 yrs is already got some problems, my 17 yo *istD is trouble free!) and have Fuji as my 2nd system.
I always shoot raw which I thought all serious photographers did so I was a little surprised that a thing in the Fuji world is people shooting raw+jpg and have their camera set to one of Fuji’s film recipes for the output. These simulate Classic Fuji emulsions of the past. E.g. Velvia or Provia or Acros B&W. I have never applied such profiles on my Pentax but it’s kind of fun with the Fuji. You get to keep the original raw but the EVF shows the film look. It’s a great way to do B&W as you see the B&W image in the EVF.
Having said that,3 yrs ago I took my family from Australia to Europe for a 2 mth holiday, on trains and planes across Europe, dragging our luggage up stairs in cheap hotels. You would think I would have taken the Olympus to save weight and size and hassle on such a holiday but the K-1 is the camera I have ultimate confidence in. Always great images in all light, weather resistant while walking snowy streets visiting our German friends, GPS tagging all our photos. There’s no way I’d trust those precious family images to anything less than my K-1. Even with the weight penalty.

I own this camera, one of my best photography purchases - ever. Has been very rugged, reliable, grip and handling and fantastic, photos just wonderful. Pentax and the K-70 are such sleepers, people looking for a used APS-C DSLR who don't know about Pentax are missing out and settling for something like Nikon 5xxx series, don't get the ruggedness and weather sealing... dynamic range is nuts on this model, has to be right up there with full frame...

caoni dayeah, that’s why developing a mirrorless camera would be a very high risc for Pentax/Ricoh. They will most likely have to develop a new camera/lens interface. With the current marketshare, that would be suicide. Entering a lens/camera mount partnership could perhaps be a solution, but again deceloping a new camera body is also costly.

I got one after way too much time looking at stats and videos of so many cameras that my mind was spinning. In the end I just could not ignore what the K-70 had to offer for the price.
This is my first serious DSLR and I just think it's great, menu system is easy to figure out, cheap quality manual lenses can be found all over the place, even flea markets! ;)
As for the rear screen, I don't understand why so many people are not keen on it, for me it was a tick in the positive box for my needs. I like to to do super close down low macro shooting of fungi in wet and poor light conditions, using focus peeking with that sceeen at the right angle saves my back and keeps me out of the mud! ;) Sometimes I will pair my mobile phone with it when the camera is at ground level peeking under a fugi and use it as a remote live view screen and trigger, how cool is that for an entry level DSLR? :-D

I have 2 KP's, a K-70, K-S2, 2 K-01's, and had a K-3, K-5, and K10D and Q- but gifted them to a friend over a few years span. She puts them to good use. Still love all of them, and take the K-70 out occasionally still. What an awesome deal in a DSLR. Great for macro and especially astro. As old fart of a film photo hobbyist, heres what i think of the K-70 after close to a year of use.
K-70 is more then awsome. An Aps C DSLR camera, more or less same size as an Micro 4/3 Panasonic G80. Rugged like a tank, I live the North of Scandinavia, were temps can go down below -20 c for days and weeks, the K-70 just keeeps goin. I'm actully amazed, from indoors temp out to - 15 below C, and I do not need to worrie about if the K-70 will work, it just do. The pentaprisma is beutiful, battery? No problems, just make sure to turn of the screen and a full day of shooting in -15C temp, will be fine. It just keeps on goin.
Rain and your our for hike or fishing? No problems. Drop it on a rock? (it will just bounce of) No problems.
It amazes me, that the modern photo community, cant see that a camera is a tool, ment to used and somewhat abused.
Add a few limited primes, like 21mm and 35mm macro and last 77 mm, they all can go in pockets, or a small backpack, and still plenty room for food an water, for a full day of hiking.
And as we all know, the Raw files are just amazing, even the very novice can edit them, with out ruin it.

Great little camera! For all who don't like mirrorless cameras (like me) this is a perfect option. I only got mine recently, after many years (ok, since 2008) with Canon, Fujifilm and Panasonic gear. I found out that mirrorless cameras are worse in handling than proper DSLRs, that APS-C has come a long way so I don't need full frame, while MFT are not good enough. The picture quality is simply great, and I like the colors better than Fuji's (no matter what setting) or Canon's -- and even the high ISO noise looks greater (more like film than I have seen before). I now regret having not tried Pentax before. Don't make the same mistake!
And as my good old Pentax Spotmeter V is still in perfect working order, I do hope my new Pentax camera will last a while, too.

Wait until the next APS-C body hits the market and sells well (hoping) for a few months... that's likely when the used K-70 prices will go up. I plan on keeping mine until it breaks, I love it... even though I'm using my mirrorless cameras more (Sony a6300 and a pair of Olympus OM-D's, E-M10 II and III).

Ended up selling my A6300 after about a year and used some of that money to build myself a Olympus m43 setup. Bought 2 E-M10 series bodies (II and III), and some used Oly lenses. Ergonomics is way better than the A6300, touchscreen shooting is great and the lenses are close enough to be nearly as good as APS-C. That's not to say larger sensors are horrible, but I love what I'm getting out of my Oly stuff especially with the well built lenses.

I had a K-70 for a while. Loved almost everything about that thing. The size, the controls, the viewfinder, and the files it produced were amazing. But I just couldn't get a damn thing in focus unless I had really deep depth of field. It wasn't inaccurate so much as the focus points are really big. That wouldn't have bothered me because I'd normally just use live view when I needed something really precise, but it stops the lens down in live view.
It'd still be an amazing small landscape and street DSLR, though.

*Nice video and a nice camera.* It is worth knowing that, according to Fourier optics theory, the lens on a camera is a spatial filter, and thereby replaces the functionality of an anti-aliasing filter on the camera sensor when the sensor resolution is higher than the optical resolution of the lens, as it is in a Pentax K-70 system. In other words, the anti-aliasing filter on the sensor has been omitted because it is useless; the lens performs the anti-aliasing instead.

Built like a tank. The SAFOX focus system is outright ancient. The Color and detail in stills are outstanding. Take it anywhere you want. I used Pentax's before the K5 II and the KS2. Loads of fun. Video is garbage but hey Pentax is not the video company. Buy a Canon Panasonic or Sony and Fujifilm if video is your game. But bargains with Pentax is a grand value. Better than the Canon cheapies in construct and features. Glass is a joke at Pentax. Really silly that. Canon and Nikon owns Pentax here. EF glass is all over the place as is NIKKOR F glass. But Pentax is like a Subaru of cameras. Most don't get them. It is a big huh???? But look at the beautiful view finder and dual dials, weather sealing and and its compact size, it makes buying a cheap Canon or Nikon silly if video is never your game. But unfortunately, video is my game. I am uploading one as I speak. And Pentax lets you take great stills. Adapt if you can to Nikkor or EF glass if lens options are your bag. I wanted to love Pentax it did so much right. But it is an ancient relic with a new body on it. But boy oh boy they know their stills great though. Rain dust snow whatever, I never got nervous about my Pentax. Got caught in a downpour and was busting out laughing watching everyone else run for cover. With my K5 ii I calmly walked to shelter wiped it down and said great pics waiting inside, and hey, now a I got a clean camera too! So if you buy the Pentax with the right use case in mind, you will be happy.

The A values on DA and D-FA lenses are controlled from the camera and can other brands can not controll it. Need pentax electronics for that. DA can be used but only wide open. If the lens is 2.8 it will always be 2.8. The blades will not move. On lenses with A-ring you can choose A value to whatever you want and the camera calculates the exposure time also taking notice of your ISO setting. Fuji, Sony etc, no problem. K&F adapters makes sure you can focus to infinity, many unknown brands kan not.
