  • On Wednesday nights back in the mid-80s, one of the shows I watched on a regular basis was "Head Of The Class" starring Howard Hesseman. It was part of a Wednesday night lineup that included "Perfect Strangers", and at one point "Growing Pains". In this video, I discuss Howard Hesseman's career and his decision to walk away from the show that was still getting good ratings. #HeadoftheClass #HowardHesseman #80sTVshows

      The main way *Facts of Life* was able to survive longer than that was by making the school secondary to the girls’ extracurricular activities working for Mrs. Garrett at the business she quit Eastland for. And she was never technically a teacher.

    One of my favorite shows as a teenager in the 80s. By 1990 I had been in the Navy for three years, and served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Christmas of 1990 (not long before the war started) we had a USO visit on my ship: Donny and Marie Osmond were there; the Pointer Sisters (although they only visited the officers); and the lovely Khrystyne Haje, who played Simone. There may have been one or two others, but I can't remember. She was so friendly with all of us, stopping to chat and take pictures. It makes a huge difference in morale to get visits like that. I try to remind her every Christmas on her Facebook page that I appreciated her visit.

      Billy did a travel special on Route 66 and mocked the name of Illinois city, Normal, wondering who'd give it that name of all the possibilities out there. Well, maybe do some research beforehand to find out how it came to be called that. There are Scottish town and village names I could ridicule but won't.... because that would make me just as ignorant as he was.

    I loved Head of the Class especially the opening sequence-I don't know why but I just enjoyed watching Hesseman heading to work-very NYC! I enjoyed Hesseman the most on WKRP. His leaving Head of the Class because he did not find it "socially redeeming" I find odd since how many sitcoms are socially redeeming? I liked Head Of The Class, but I mostly watched the show when it was on the local independent channel in re-runs. I had been curious as to why Howard Hesseman left the show after the fourth season. I really wish movie and television producers would stop making re-makes of shows because they are often uninspiring and unimaginative. Although WKRP only ran 4 seasons (Howard Hesseman was upset CBS had a hit show, but they kept moving it around to different nights, which caused it to suffer in the ratings), it gained a cult following when local stations broadcast re-runs of the show late at night on the weekends, which is why The New WKRP was put into syndication to air in the same time slot. If treated by the network properly, I think WKRP could have run another two seasons until 1984.

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The new WKRP was OK, but it was no match for the original. Part of the reason for that was that MTM wasn’t really MTM anymore. Mary Tyler Moore sold her share of the company, Grant Tinker had already bailed out when he went to work for NBC and divorced her, and the original writers had moved onto other shows and didn’t want to come back. Most of the cast agreed; even Loni Anderson did *Nurses* instead!
      Not only that, it was hard for a syndicated show to even get decent writers. Now, you couldn’t pay anybody genuinely good to work on network TV anymore.

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      CBS killed two birds with one stone. They canceled *WKRP* and undermined the basic premise of *One Day at a Time* by having him play Ann’s second husband, but that show’s days were likely numbered with or without him because it had been on so long by that point.

    What I find perplexing about Hesseman's claim is that he was no naive newbie to the industry. He was already in a primetime network sitcom back in 1978 and knew how Hollywood worked. Additionally, everybody knows sitcoms continue to be
    an entertainment genre meant to pass the time for audiences----and won't contain highbrow, intellectual level ,thought-provoking comedy. So, I tend to doubt his version of the story because ultimately....what did Howard really expect the show to be ?

    Ah yes, in 2022, with the Ukrainian-Russian crisis still in full swing, it's very interesting you bring up one of my childhood shows. HOTC was actually one of my favorite TV shows growing up in NYC. Some fun facts regarding the show:
    1) The exterior shots used for Fillmore H.S. are in fact shots of a junior high school just east of Union Square. Washington Irving Junior High along Irving Place.
    2) A 2-part overseas episode had the youngsters compete in an international quiz competition. This marked the first time an American primetime series filmed scenes in what was then The U.S.S.R.

      Sadly, it's usually like that when an actor, that plays a huge role in a TV show, leaves the series. Was "Two and a half Men" the same after Charlie Sheen was no longer involved? No. Was "Married with Children" the same when the guy that played Steve Rhodes left to continue acting in Broadway because that's where his heart was? No. Sadly this normally happens a lot when something like that happens, and it's usually ends up to the detriment of the show.
      Billy wasn't a bad actor, and I found him funny. But for me, Howard helped make that show what it was, and you could tell the humor and heart of the show wasn't the same without him.

    Actually, what I was told in another video is that Seasons 4 and 5 were two different semesters, but the same year. So it could be possible that it could happen. I am also sure that there is no indication what year it was and what grade they were in so perhaps some of the seasons were just different parts of one semester.

    I remember this show vaguely back in the day when it first was airing. And then recently I binged-watched all the episodes on TH-cam. A few observations from the show: There were so many up and comers on the show like Robin Givens, Brad Pitt Guess-starred on an episode, Michael DeLorenzo, the Asian kid from Indiana Jones/Goonies. I remember the Indian Student never got his own story on the show and I remember when the Asian student dated the black girl in one episode which back then was like WHOOOO. Overall one of those nostalgic shows from back in the day. 📺📺♥♥♥♥♥

    Truth be told that show went downhill looking back. Because, Howard Hesseman was not only the star of that show, but he kept the flow in terms of the leadership, strong character presence & storyline. The new Head of the Class had sunk to new lows. Frankly, it wasn't staying true of the essences of what Head of the Class was about. Bringing Robin Givens back in cameo as one of the parents wasn't enough to save that show. The storylines after the third episode was very weak. Thank God it was cancelled by HBO Max. That was a huge mistake.

    Reboots are only cool if you are seeing the characters you haven't seen for a long time... But, this reboot will only have 1 returning character, Robin Givens (as far as I know)... It would be so cool if Hessman had appearances on the show, but seeing how he left, and is 81 years old, that is probably not likely.

    In the Head of the Class fan community, the question of why Hesseman left HOTC has been talked about endlessly, and there have been many rumors. The general consensus, both from some of the cast members and others who were involved in the show, is that Hesseman believed the show was going to be mostly a starring vehicle for him, and he was unhappy that so much airtime was given to the students. Also, I had always believed that Hesseman willingly left the show after the fourth season, since he was so negative towards it in multiple interviews dating back to the second season. However, co-producer Michael Elias claimed recently on Reddit that the network had asked the producers to freshen up the show as the ratings were dropping, and they thought the best way to do that would be to change the lead character in the show, hence the replacement of Mr. Moore with Mr. McGregor. If this is true, it seems to imply that Hesseman was let go.
    We have never heard an official reason for his dismissal from Hesseman himself, simply cryptic statements regarding his unhappiness with the show.
    For the record, I believe Mr. Moore, along with Johnny Fever, were his best roles.

    I was a big fan of the show as a kid. I've enjoyed re-watching it as an adult. I still find it funny. While I enjoyed Hesseman's Mr. Moore and thought he had great chemistry with the cast, honestly the inclusion of Billy to take his place was a good move. I thought Billy also had great chemistry with the cast. Of course as a kid I hated to see the show leave the air, but it was inevitable with a class of geniuses in the same class for five years. Spinning Billy off into his own show was also a good move. I have a handful of episodes of the Billy spinoff that I downloaded from somewhere.
