  • Today we take a look at a complete collection of every Speed Machine vehicle sold by Mattel back in 1983. This collection of rare cars, and in some cases, ultra-rare grail cars, has taken my years to acquire and thousands of dollars invested. Many of the cars you will see in this video are extremely scarce variations, not likely to be found without extensive searching, luck, and time. As part of this video, we will not only take a close look at each car and truck, but I will also share with you what I personally spent to buy them, and the prices I have observed these cars sell for when they have become available on eBay. Thanks for watching, and I do hope you enjoy!

    Excellent collection! it was interesting that there were so many fantasy type models that collectors don't really like but they command a high price because of Rarity

    • @wtffor
      @wtffor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, Mark! Those weird castings and cars were never popular, still aren't, but very possibly are the rarest due to that fact. They were not easy for me to track down, this I can attest!

      Yep the fact that they were bad is why nobody collected them and how they became rare. Now people that want a complete collection are having to cough up the dough to get them because nobody else has one.

    Fantastic video man....I'm really glad you gave the prices you paid too...helps a lot when trying to track them down, as most price guides are kind of outta touch on some of this rarer stuff...one of your best videos all around..thanks O-Dawg!

      Thank you Dave! This was a fun video to make, one I've been wanting to do a long time. I think I will incorporate my own flavor of price guide in my vintage videos from now on, to some extent, as you are right... price guides don't and can't keep up to the quickly and increasing changes of the second hand market on the more rare vehicles.

    How could you not like this video!!! This has helped me out identifying 2 cars I remembered I have from my childhood collection (Top Eliminator and Lowdown) but could never find anything about! I remember my brother got the Eliminator too so my dad crudely engraved the first letter of our name on the base of each. I remembered the Eliminator came on a different colored card, and when I saw the thumbnail for this video, I remembered it exactly! Thankx for sharing O-Dawg, loved every minute of it!

    Man as a newcomer to collecting Hot Wheels and such this was very educational. Seems like I had a few of these as a kid. I would have been about 6 years old when they came out. May be a set of cars I will have to look into. Although I may go with a little lower condition to keep it affordable. Thanks for the video on these.

    Very well made and informative video!Without reading through all the comments has anyone mentioned the packin' Pacer? Unless they changed the interior from the mainline car, those aren't two doggies. It's a rear mounted engine and those are the tailpipes. Again. Great video! I have a couple speed machines myself... But nothing that you don't already have

      Is it true there isn't that many HW collectors in Canada? wtffor says it off and on in his videos. Like how he can just walk into Wal-Mart and pick up the complete Japan Historics set, certainly can't do that here in the USA!

    • @ecua3000
      @ecua3000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrWolfSnack it's hard to say. There definitely isn't as many as in the US, but there is a healthy amount. I think that due to our Walmarts operating hours it's a little easier to find stuff on the pegs, but in some cities the competition and hunt is very competitive.

    Wow! where did you find these, I have a few lying in my collection and they are worth about $100 at most, what is strange is that they are not even the nicest cars being all plastic but i guess the scarcity makes them so rare. Do you have any of the original 16 hot wheels they are worth alot of money especially Custom Volkswagen and Beatnik Bandit?

    I know there are variations on the Super Van casting on previous releases where the protruding side markers are there and on others they are not, so it may be the case for the Speed Machines? I'm basically an original redline, matchbox and newer realistic HW car collector so I can't confirm this for the Speed Machines -- something to look into.
    Maybe at some point you could do a similar feature on the Real Riders series from the 80's if you have most of them?
    PS I dig your videos and your insane 50,000+ collection! I've only got around 20,000 diecast in my collection.

    • @wtffor
      @wtffor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, however the side marker variations ceased in 1980 from what I remember, so this being a 1983 Speed Machine release there were no side marker variations anymore. Thanks for the info and comment! Also a real riders video will definitely be coming one day!

    Amazing how much money these cars have accumulated over time, they would have been a steal in their day, easy to overlook in the shopping rush, and possibly taken for granted when purchasing. There is also the mebe boxed cars that were released in Italy and surrounding countries, similarly understated, any relation to these I wonder?

    • @wtffor

      Indeed! Not sure on relations to the SPeed Machines, but international cars do command high prices as well from this era.

    @wtffor, hello. I have been watching this video and recently my dad and I managed to find a Packin' Pacer Speed Machines from a California set which oddly features a chrome interior as opposed to the standard yellow interior. The rivets have clearly not been tampered with and the car is overall in great shape. Would you happen to have any information on this unusual variation?

    @HectorLopez-dx4wv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome. Thank you for sharing the prices. I am speedily adding to my collection too as fast as I can afford. Since you are so into variations, you might be able to help me. I got a loose Hot Wheels Packin' Pacer, orange color, GHO, that is supposed to be made in 1981. However, mine has no tampos. I have examined it very closely to see if the tampos were actually removed somehow, but seems it was made originally without them because I can't see any trace, or marks, or discoloring. Also the orange color seem to be a bit darker than the orange with tampos. I've researched a lot but can't find that there was such a variation without tampos. Do you know, or anyone else for that matter, anything about that one?

    • @wtffor
      @wtffor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the car you have is what would be considered and "error'... a car that was produced from the factory and should have had tampos, but for some reason or another it missed that step in assembly. These types of cars still happen today, and are usually too hard to find or low numbers to assign a price or value to. For some collectors they are priceless, for others they are not collected as they can not usually be confirmed, as customizers can do wonders when they want to. Thanks for the comment, and I hope my answer was helpful!

      Once I open an old Hot Wheels, there's no going back and therefor no regrets! :) I love my cars loose, it's just the best way for me to show and display

    Great video! I’ve got a Speed machine bubble gunner with a chrome engine and interior. Is it worth anything?

      Absolutely! Is she mint? If so, $20 on ebay I guess. If not, let sentimental value prevail, otherwise $5.

    I like to video I would have liked to have seen all of the bases of all cars

      @wtffor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I am glad you liked the video! There are not too many details on the bases of most of these cars, unlike regular mainline cars of the day.

    where in Canada are you from? Nanaimo for me. seems we have a mutual passion for loose cars. if you search Hotwheels Nanaimo Shaw you will see a video or local channel did on my collection. nothing compared to yours but same passion

    19:50 You can still use the site if you access it through the last update in the Wayback Machine tool by The Internet Archive. That's what I did, because HobbyDB sucks and is horrible. Just note that all the images will be broken/deleted, so its text only.
    Alternatively, a new guy in the game, is CollectHW, which the site is pretty much laid out exactly like STDC once you get the hang of it. I tested it out in my collection and it performed really well for my tagging and database organizing, a good substitute. collecthw.com/

      Wow, thank you for the link to CollectHW, that is an awesome new site I will be using and recommending! I love that he has pictures of his collection and others too.

      @@wtffor Just as an update SouthTexasDiecast is online permanently now and has funding through 2028 and are actively working on adding new cars in since their last update in the 2010's. They have had a rough time these last few years with webhosts increasing rates, personal problems with the owner, and lack of help running the website, but looks like they are getting back in action now. Values are still out of date but that's not such a big deal. Also HobbyDB has gotten worse, it's pumped full of ads first, info second, and the owner is increasingly trying to pay money to absorb other people's websites and info to pad his pocket. Just a bad site overall.
