    I hope y'all enjoyed this. This video was experimental in some ways, as I'm trying to walk the line of giving my opinions on train and transport stuff (especially here in Germany), being honest about it, but also not getting bogged down in the seriousness of it all.
    Also, I'm thinking of ending future videos by answering a viewer question or two. So if there's anything you'd want to ask to get briefly featured in a video, let me know!

      while they all have there charm in some way, with some being just like "yeah im sure it will fit right here right in the middle of a Street or next to some random houses" like in the direction of Stade, and Neuwiedental bieng just a hole in the Ground, do you have any favorite Stations?

    Wow… I learned more about Hamburg in this video than I did… ever. S5 service reminds me of how the 5 train in NYC always gets rerouted somewhere and has 3 northbound termini during rush hours (and is also the most unpredictable and unreliable subway line in the trunk line it runs on)

      Hey thank you so much! Perhaps 5 is an unlucky number for trains around the globe haha

    In case you need video ideas: the S1 has a few issues too, especially the west branch between Wedel and Blankenese. There's only a single track and if during peak hours one train coming from HBF is delayed by more than ~20s every train after that (in both directions) will be delayed, too. Once the branch is about 7 minutes behind schedule a train gets cancelled, which leads to the next train being delayed because more people would like to use it and the whole cycle continues.
    Also, Iserbrook is the only single track station in the whole network, Blankenese is a terminal station and Sülldorf signal box hasn't been modernized since 1927

      I think I can definitely make a video out of this! I didn't know about Iserbrook, and I feel like Blankenese Bf in general is a trove of both history and potential network improvements

    One of the main problems for the S Bahn Hamburg is that, (as most railways in Germany r.n.) they have a crippling shortage of personal. That’s probably the reason they cut the frequency of service in the edge times of day. Also our poor railway is horribly underfunded everywhere because of the Auto Lobby(hate these guys).

    Omg thank you for shedding light on this situation! It’s a Desaster.
    Coming from the northern part I was used to be able to reach both Harburg with the S3, Bergedorf with the S21 and both going over Altona Reeperbahn as well as Sternschanze Route. Now it’s completely messed up and I have to change trains to reach my family in Bergedorf. Also coming from Bergedorf you have to change trains now if you want to reach the north. This is super frustrating, especially for the people with special needs. Berliner Tor doesn’t have any lift from the Sbahn and to change platforms in central station takes so much time you won’t make your connection as planned!
    I really hope this video reaches some executives at HVV 👍

    Omg i loved this video! You need to come to Mannheim/Heidelberg and look at our messy "S-Bahn"-ish System! Hourly service on all lines, interlining not working to create a consistent every 20 minute service between Heidelberg, Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. Multiple Lines of several trains are put together as early as 9 pm which means that travelling across the region takes fucking FOREVER.

      As someone responding from the train right now: The S5 is very real

  • @TyllToons
    @TyllToons วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I'm from the other side of Hamburg and I love to complain about the S-Bahn, and the TH-cam algorithm knows me all too well so here I am. I'm from near Pinneberg and I used to always take the S3 from Halstenbek to get to Hamburg, but ever since they introduced an express bus line from Pinneberg to the airport, I've always been using that to get to Niendorf Nord and take the U2 from there because you can NEVER rely on the S-Bahn. Every single time I take the S-Bahn to get to some kind of important appointment or to catch a long distance train, there's ALWAYS some complimation. Because I'm now an U-Bahn enjoyer, I have never actually experienced the S5 until this day since I think I've only ever used the S-Bahn once since the network update when I had to go to Harburg. While the new network is probably better for central Hamburg as there won't be as many complications in Altona anymore, it sucks for people coming from outside the town. I was also a big fan of the single and double digit services, but I've actually noticed that many locals were never aware of the system behind it, so that might explain why they changed it. The old network map was certainly tough to read for outsiders with multiple services having the same colour, and S2 and S11 not even being marked properly because they were peak hours only. It definitely makes sense to run so many trains to Neugraben because of how busy the Hauptbahnhof - Harburg stretch is, but it's certainly silly to create the "new" S6 service instead of just running more S5 trains. It's also really silly to get rid of the Citytunnel connection so you HAVE to change trains. I like the AKN a lot, but extending S-Bahn services to Kaltenkirchen is certainly better for the people up there because of the annoying change at Eidelstedt (And it's certainly better than the rail replacement service that's been going on for way too long now). By the way, them adding and removing another set of 3 cars to trains also happens on the S3 at Elbgaustraße, or at least it used to on the old network, I'm not sure if they still do that. There's also an additional S-Bahn platform at Pinneberg because some S21 trains used to terminate there ages ago, but it's also fallen out use long ago and it's really sad to look at. Any way, long story short, you've earned yourself a sub and my condolences for having to rely on the S5. I keep seeing tweets from S-Bahn Hamburg every day that trains only run between Stade and Neugraben or not at all. Hopefully they'll fix some of their issues soon, but I fear with the extension to Kaltenkirchen you'll get even more delays and complications. Fun!

    • @TFTSB

      Thank you so much! I wish our S-Bahn network was as strong as the U-bahn network - even if the U4 feels very WIP still

    • @TyllToons
      @TyllToons วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@TFTSB The U4 is so dope but it's also such a huge letdown considering how long it took them to build two stations and then another one, and how long it is taking them to build the Horner Geest extension (which just got delayed by another year). The new stations are certainly the coolest on the network, but right now the line's kind of a joke that's only there to take pressure of the U2. It will be really cool to see when it eventually reaches Wilhelmsburg and Harburg... at some point before the heat death of the universe. Also I do not understand why the U4 does that huge 180 degrees turn from Jungfernstieg to Überseequartier without calling anywhere, and they should have built a stop near the Elbphilharmonie. They built a whole new U-Bahn line to serve the HafenCity, but you still have to use the U3 to get to the HafenCity's biggest attraction from Baumwall. I get why some people say it's a huge waste of tax money.

    As someone who primarily used the S21 and now the S2, I genuinely don't understand why they felt the need to change the numbering to remove the pattern between the single and double digit lines. For whom is this simpler? Newcomers and tourists will have to look at the plans no matter what, and with the old naming scheme there was also at least some clear pattern to learn and use.

    I really liked this video. I was wondering what's up with the S5 line when i was in Neugraben a few weeks back, it just didn't go past the station due to some technical problems. The S5 line also somewhat reminded me of my own local "S-Bahn" line RS1 in Bremen, which also has a few different end points and atrocious frequencies in the eastern half, especially on weekends.

      I'm surprised it was so empty! If you come again during the summer, I'd say go for the end of July/into August so you can hit the Summer Dom Carnival in St. Pauli. Hamburg also does have some very pretty areas within it - if you want a nice pedestrianised area that looks sort of like what I showed off near where I live in Niedersachsen, the area around Niendorf Markt in Hamburg proper feels a bit similar architecturally and layout-wise!

    13:38 What are you talking about here? Yes changing plattforms in busy times at the Hamburg Hbf is bothersome (especially if you are like me one of the unfortunate souls frequently arriving at plattform 13 a-c which is especially overcrowded), but to change the S-Bahn line while coming out of Stade doesn't require leaving the plattform at all (unless you want to go back the way you came to the south/east) and isn't even in the main building like the Plattform 1 is where the S-Bahn connections leading back south/east are. To get to Altona you literally just have to step out of the train and wait on the plattform until the right train arrives to get on. Even if you want to change direction to go to the Airport there is a seperate tunnel just for changing to the other S-Bahn plattform.(or to the U1 or U3)

    • @TFTSB
      @TFTSB  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, but as I say shortly after, changing a direct route to one with a connection- even a small one - is still a downgrade for those making that commute

      @@TFTSBthat's true, but other people get more direct connections, so it evens out.
      The new network will be good for the future, only with these simpler routes the punctuality will be able to be increased
